over tents that billow in the wind,
the walkers and gawkers and holy
rollers strolling the Midway, half-
drunk on aromas and dizzying
colors and screams of children
from whirlywheels and gut-
wrenchers and who wants to
see the baby Herfords and pet
the pygmy goats and who will
hold your hand in the funhouse
as you turn the corner and gaze
into the wavy mirror of the past
where the future was always now
and the clowns and freaks and
sideshow barkers with empty
eyes, covered in tattoos, calling
us to come and win a prize were
who we would become, and
the carnival, the carousel,
the Ferris wheel only illusions,
and no need to shoot out the stars—
they flamed out eons ago.

onlookers gawk at the pilots of the Blue Angels

In the crowd, the number one phrase I heard over and over was 'ooooh' and 'oh my'. 30 seconds later it was all over, they were safely inside the hotel away from the crowd and the paparazzi.
This Juvenile black crowned night heron seemed bored with our picture taking. He opened his beak widely as he stuck his tongue out at us. Could it be a yawn ? I thought. Or maybe he was just tired of being gawked at by all the tourists and visitors. After awhile he began to close his eyes and doze in peaceful splendor.

...meandering north on the Blue Ridge Parkway this October chasing the light; gawking at vistas, pulling off then going on; always looking for photo possibilities, we finally parked off the road past the Linn Cove viaduct and spent some time soaking in the view...this image, one of several, is just a small portion of what we were privileged to see...

It was a perfect summer afternoon, so I decided to wander around South Pier, gawk at the tourists, and catch the wave action.
Raining and cold out i was convinced to go thru with my plan of checking out the railyrd in Rochelle today by Kudra7, her car, and her extra umbrella.
I was happily stunned to find this on one of the first trains i walked up on.

I was mesmerized watching this flock of Semipalmated Plovers maneuver in unison over the tidal waters of the Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge. Although, I did take lots of photos of this flock, I stood and watch them for a very long time...flock gawking.

Northern Red-shafted Flicker. t is the only woodpecker that commonly feeds on the ground. There are over 100 common names for the Northern Flicker. Among them are: Yellowhammer, clape, gaffer woodpecker, harry-wicket, heigh-ho, wake-up, walk-up, wick-up, yarrup, and gawker bird. Many of these names are attempts at imitating some of its calls. Okay, so this is a different sort of entry for me and I'm still trying to figure out how it's going to go. What you see above is a bit of a character entry; an introduction, if you will, to a story arc I'd like to build over the next few months.

I'll admit I did a lot of gawking when hiking Smith Rock's Misery trail. Remarkable geological wonder. I found it's varied forms primeval, primordial and awe inspiring.
Crooked river hugs it tightly adding to the beauty.
This is one of the 2 major formations here, with many smaller buttes, spires, hoodoos and oddities including "Monkey Face" (shown in comments).
Smith Rock is one of the Seven Wonders of Oregon.
As it should be.

Not everything is meant to be….
A brood of young Barn Owls waiting for their parents to bring them a meal. What happens next is absolute chaos. I'm saving those for contests as they are pretty spectacular action shots.
Henry Cockburn, he of the street of irritating chirpy teeny goths (you're doing it wrong, kids, go read some Shelley in a cemetery), thought all those uniformly straight streets in the earlier parts of the New Town were a terrible and dull mistake. This wee street broke that mould.
He wrote, "Abercromby Place, though not begun till about 1809, was the first instance in which the straight line was voluntarily departed from. People used to go and stare at the curved street." Jury's out on the exact level of sarcasm in his statement.
