This would be from the finale moose encounter from our 2015 road trip to Waterton, Glacier, Yellowstone and finally the Tetons. This was our 3rd sighting of the morning, at Schwabachers, and this poor guy just wanted to be alone. He, his lady friend and her calf finally made it through the line of cars parked on the dirt road and down to the safety and quiet of the river. I might add while the rest of the gawkers and photogs were trying to get closer, I was trying to back up with that 600mm combo AND find an angle through the people. Yeegads.

The northern flicker (Colaptes auratus) is a medium-sized member of the woodpecker family. It is native to most of North America, parts of Central America, Cuba, the Cayman Islands, and is one of the few woodpecker species that migrate. There are over 100 common names for the northern flicker. Among them are: yellowhammer (as it's known as the state bird of Alabama), clape, gaffer woodpecker, harry-wicket, heigh-ho, wake-up, walk-up, wick-up, yarrup, and gawker bird. Hi, everyone! Just came back from an EPIC five-day hiking, climbing, and backpacking adventure all over the eastern Sierra.
For years and years, I've heard, gawked at pictures, and even dreamed about these giant lenticular clouds called Sierra Waves. I've seen a couple really dramatic images of them, but most are shot from random places by people who were seemingly caught off guard without a foreground. During all the time I've spent backpacking in these mountains, it's been one of my biggest goals to find and photograph one of these wonders of nature created by high winds aloft. When I was out climbing Mount Gould in the afternoon and being pelted by 50mph winds, I noticed a huge line of lenticular clouds forming before my eyes, and the high winds began to get my hopes up. Within a few minutes, though, massive snow clouds poured their way over the Great Western Divide in the distance and raced their way over to the Crest. I scurried down from the summit to the 12,000-foot pass, partially sheltered by a pile of boulders from the worst of the subfreezing temperatures, roaring 50mph winds, and waves of snow. The low snow clouds would obscure the valley almost completely, then periodically clear out to begin to reveal...
...this.
As the clouds slowly began to part, the winds howled even louder and more furiously, and the wave became ever the more beautiful and complex. The revealing was one of the single most stunning and memorable Sierra scenes I've ever seen, and I'm so happy to be able to share it with you.
An hour later, the sky lit up in a unique scene of anticrepuscular rays, then the snow clouds came back and darkness closed in as I began the 5-mile hike back to my car and the 4-hour drive back to school.
Now here I am, sitting in the library between classes, still in disbelief at what I saw out there. It'll sink in one of these days.

I caught up with the Mercer County Harris Sparrow today just before noon today. The celebrity bird was briefly cooperative, posing for a few shots in a tree while a dozen admirers gawked on below. It was a superb day - the Orange-Crowned Warbler was showing nicely in Trenton as well.
Watched a woman get arrested for something 2 mins before this, walked down the alley rather than gawk at the happenngs, found some light.

I couldn't believe it as this was happening. It had been absolutely gorgeous all day - pure blue sky with a perfect light smattering of clouds - until this one group of darker clouds flew right overhead and over Manhattan. The rainbow started to form, and as I grabbed my camera it started to drizzle. Not five minutes later it was all gone...

Random wandering found me gawking at this incredible machine. It seemed like some insatiable, concrete munching T-Rex thing. I think I shot off maybe 200 images in between laughs and bouts of the horrors. I'm sure Sam Neill was in there somewhere.
A quick cell phone view of some Elitist Pricks gawking at the back of a camera and drooling over the goodies at Minnesota Commercial's engine facility.
We had a helluva fun time gallivanting around the turntable pit and shops, with permission of course.

View of the the Upper Tahquamenon Falls from the river.
The upper falls are more 60m / 200 feet across with a drop of approximately 15m / 50 feet with a peak spring runoff volume of nearly 200,000L / 50,000 gallons per second- -making the upper falls one of the largest waterfalls east of the Mississippi River. The upper falls lie with in Michigan's Tahquamenon Falls State Park, Luce County.
The yellowish / brown colour of the water stems from tannins leached from cedar swamps from the rivers watershed. The foam on the river results from the combination of soft water (low mineral concentration), lignin proteins from decaying organic matter, and turbidity.
