Snow falling all day today. Andie and I decided to build a snowman in front of our house. As we shaped the snow into three perfect spheres, laughter echoed in the winter air. With carrot nose and coal smile, our snowman seemed to come to life.

I may not be the pretty skinny girl who has her picture gawked at, but I am me. I am a human being, and I am happy with myself. I have curves, and I don't wear a size 2. Call me what you want, I know I truly am.
I believe the sun should never set upon an argument
I believe we place our happiness in other people's hands
I believe that junk food tastes so good because it's bad for you
I believe your parents did the best job they knew how to do
I believe that beauty magazines promote low self esteem
I believe I'm loved when I'm completely by myself alone
I believe in Karma what you give is what you get returned
I believe you can't appreciate real love 'til you've been burned
I believe the grass is no more greener on the other side
I believe you don't know what you've got until you say goodbye
I believe you can't control or choose your sexuality
I believe that trust is more important than monogamy
I believe your most attractive features are your heart and soul
I believe that family is worth more than money or gold
I believe the struggle for financial freedom is unfair
I believe the only ones who disagree are millionaires
I believe in Karma what you give is what you get returned
I believe you can't appreciate real love 'til you've been burned
I believe the grass is no more greener on the other side
I believe you don't know what you've got until you say goodbye
I believe forgiveness is the key to your own happiness
I believe that wedded bliss negates the need to be undressed
I believe that God does not endorse tv evangelists
I believe in love surviving death into eternity
I believe in Karma what you give is what you get returned
I believe you can't appreciate real love 'til you've been burned
I believe the grass is no more greener on the other side
I believe you don't know what you've got until you say goodbye

Last Friday, I was finally able to jump back into the Prius for another Yosemite run, this time with the goal of hiking the Upper Falls Trail with hopes of grabbing a shot of the Milky Way branching out from Yosemite Falls. I have been after a shot like this since taking a shot of the Super Moon while hiking back down from Yosemite Point back in 2013.
I pulled into the valley around 7:30 PM and spent a little bit of time walking along the river and admiring the dogwood blossoms which were everywhere. The river seemed almost twice its normal size as the heavy winter snowfall was now melting in earnest throughout the valley. All of the smaller falls along both sides of the valley were going full tilt. Ribbon, Sentinel, the cascades next to the Royal Arches... everywhere you turned there was another waterfall.
All of this should have tipped me off that I was going to have to deal with some challenges, but I have to admit that I wasn't thinking about potential problems as I stood gawking at the amount of water coming over Bridal Veil Fall. It was definitely a good night to be in the valley.
My first challenge showed up when I tried to park near the Upper Falls trail. The campground 4 parking lot was now by reservation only and you had to be a registered camper to park there. It seemed that the care-free days of the "dirt bagger" climbers had definitely come to an end. To make matters worse, when I went to park on the opposite side of the road, a sign was posted which read "No parking from 12 - 6 AM...Tow Away Zone." So....where did they want me to park? Back at Cook's meadow? What about all of those hikers on the trail? Were rangers going to tow away their cars if they couldn't make it back by midnight?
I decided to take a chance that they were really trying to make sure people knew they were not allowed to camp in their cars overnight in Yosemite. At 9:30, I parked in the lot opposite camp 4, double checked my bag and set off. I took my sweet time going up as I'm not as fast as I used to be and after 40 or so switchbacks, I began to make my way across the valley wall toward the Falls.
I should point out that the last time I was up on this trail, it was in late June after a dry Winter. In May, much of the trail is literally under water as several small streams cross the trail in various places. I had been hearing several of these small streams and waterfalls for about a half an hour or so, but as I passed Columbia Rock and drew near where the trail turned North toward the falls, I began to hear another, more ominous sound. I was still several turns away from the corner when the wind began to pick up and mist began falling from the sky. As no wind was forecasted for the valley that night, it began to dawn on my that the low rumble, the wind, and the mist were all due to the incredible volume of water that was now coming down in Yosemite Falls. As I turned the corner, the mist hit me full force in the face and I turned off my head lamp. The effect was almost terrifying. You couldn't see the falls, but it sounded like they were just above my head. The ground seemed to be shaking, and the wind was noticeably stronger. When I switched my headlamp back on, you could see how hard the mist was blowing now and the trail in front of me was completely soaked.
Extremely long exposures were now completely out of the question as mist was blowing in all directions including directly onto my lens. I could barely get away with 25 - 30 second exposures, so that's what I stuck with. I had to wait for about an hour for the Milky Way to show up (thank God for great wifi on that section of the trail) and I ended up shooting from about midnight to 2 AM. The shot above is from a pano taken with the 14-24 2.8. It was definitely slow going as I paused to wipe down the lens after every shot, and I also managed to knock my tripod off a cliff which required a rescue effort.
So....lessons? First of all, if there is a heavy snowfall in the preceding Winter, May is probably not the best month to try a Milky Way shoot on that trail. If the falls are going full tilt, the billowing clouds of mist that are generated land right on top of the falls trail...which probably feels GREAT on a warm afternoon. But when you are shooting long exposures trying to capture the Milky Way, it can be a real challenge. A small group of 5-6 other photographers came up after me and ended up leaving after an hour or so. It was just too windy and wet. The wind that was generated by that amount of water was definitely impressive.
Secondly, just because it's windy and mist is flying in all directions, it doesn't mean your chances of getting Milky Way shots are nil. I am shocked that I was able to get anything that night. Before heading back down in frustration, it's always a good idea to at least try a few shots in case you get lucky.
Third, it seems that the signage around that parking lot is meant to scare away would-be car campers. I arrived, tired and pretty sore, well after 3 PM and my car was one of several that was left in the lot. No tickets or notes were on any of the cars.
I'll probably give this another try, but it might need to wait a year as I might not be able to get back up there for another Milky Way attempt this Summer.

I thought I was going to panic but everything ended up okay eventually. But everything was frightening and dramatic for a few moments and the sky condition freaked me out. I was glad to have a pulloff when I needed one which was lucky, I was terrified!

Another bucket list shot I had for 2816 was the bridge here at Camden. Here the train heads east over the Mississippi River on the way to Union Depot for the public to gawk at.

It took a jacket from Tetra to finally get me to put together my first LaraX outfit. And let's face it, it's an amazing jacket! (got the FP!). I'm already starting to get a big folder of LaraX clothes including this skirt from AsteroidBox and top from Gawk. It was just a great look with the 3 pieces that inspired me to do a photo. And when in doubt add in some BOM pieces like the stockings from Smesh.
I am glad that old Lara stuff like the nails from Alaia and shoes from Dazzling still fit perfect. If I lost my shoe collection......(just doesn't want to think about it).

Once again...waiting at the Doctor's for my Mom. The people there all think I'm crazy. Every time we go, I'm taking pictures of bushes, flowers or whatever looks pretty at the time. :)) They are usually gawking out the window at me. My Mother just laughs and says, "That's just my daughter".....
The current summer stage of development of deer in our area is my favorite time of the year. Mothers are busy with young fawns, teaching them how to survive in a world designed for a relatively quick departure, even if they learn well.
During this time, last year's fawns are now spritely young ones out on their own after spending their first year abiding life close to their mom. Though they are nimble, exceedingly fast runners and able to forage on their own, there is still a lot they don't know.
Often, when humans drive by slowly, the younger ones take all the time they need to determine if this interruption is friendly or not. Young deer will often stop whatever they are doing and stand still for quite some time, trying to figure out what is going on.
Back in the 1960s, when I was still in high school, our hometown had a smattering of people of over 2,000. People would remark that everyone knew everybody, but that really wasn't true, especially for farm boys.
Because the dads of farm lads had a to-do list longer than summer, we didn't spend our days walking the town's concrete jungle. We walked beans, cultivated corn, baled hay, milked cows twice a day, fed pigs, and did whatever else our dads would come up with for us to keep occupied and out of trouble.
But on Friday nights, many of us farm boys relaxed by taking a wide variety of cars and pickups into town for a night of revelry, or at least it seemed like revelry compared to our tedious farm work.
On our agenda when we went into town as the sun was setting was to drive up and down Main Street repeatedly and make soft U-turns on each end of the four-block-long drag. We must have brought great joy and excitement to the town girls as small groups of them would walk the streets and pretend they were shopping.
However, us guys knew better. Little clusters of teen-aged town girls were really scouting to see if any attractive fellows were driving those old farm vehicles or if there were any strong, handsome farm boys riding along as spectators with the car windows open, the radio blaring KOMA from Oklahoma City, a prominent radio station known for playing Top 40 hits and rock and roll music.
If the girls spotted someone new riding around or saw a particular fellow they were soft on, they would often adopt the stance of these young deer and stare until the sound of the car muffler receded as the vehicle proceeded down the street.

“Meg gawked. “He—he really is a centaur.”
“Well spotted,” I said. “I suppose the lower body of a horse is what gave him away?”
She punched me in the arm.”

Another night, another walk, another bridge, another gawk; morning greets with light and mist; mesmerising, enthralling, captivating and many more superlatives. We have all in the big cities but for these mornings and the walk to the bridge.
This woodpecker was gracious enough to pose for me while I was at the Desert Botanical Garden with Flickr friends Lynne, Michele & Pam. I love the markings on these birds.
The Northern Flicker (Colaptes auratus) is a medium-sized member of the woodpecker family. It is native to most of North America, parts of Central America, Cuba, the Cayman Islands, is one of the few woodpecker species that migrates, and is the only woodpecker that commonly feeds on the ground. There are over 100 common names for the Northern Flicker. Among them are: Clape, gaffer woodpecker, harry-wicket, heigh-ho, wake-up, walk-up, wick-up, yarrup, and gawker bird. Many of these names are attempts at imitating some of its calls.

I photographed this Northern Flicker at the Black Point Wildlife Drive section of Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge located immediately north of the NASA Space complex on Florida's Atlantic Coast. We had noticed this snag adjoining the wildlife drive on every one of our circuits around the park and on several occasions, we had seen a kingfisher on one of its branches. However, the lighting had been such that it had offered only a silhouette of that bird. This time around it had been a little different. This time it had been not a kingfisher, but this Northern Flicker and the lighting had been still diffused, but more frontal, thus allowing me this and half a dozen other frames. This was the only keeper.
The Northern Flicker or Common Flicker is a medium-sized bird of the woodpecker family. It is native to most of North America, parts of Central America, Cuba, and the Cayman Islands, and is one of the few woodpecker species that migrate. Over 100 common names for the northern flicker are known, including yellowhammer (not to be confused with the Eurasian yellowhammer), clape, gaffer woodpecker, harry-wicket, heigh-ho, wake-up, walk-up, wick-up, yarrup, and gawker bird. Many of these names derive from attempts to imitate some of its calls.
