I was recently part of an all-female panel on the "Suburbanisation of the Urban" sponsored by London School of Economics and Lunch on the Roof. My contribution focused on the increasing trend for urban gated communities. The US model of "fear fortresses" is permeating the UK built environment. Governments, corporations and the wealthy benefit from a culture of fear. It creates order, uniformity, obedience. And the rest of us are all the poorer for the resulting diminished quality of life.
