This is a Garden in my front yard near the Garage !

There are Marigolds, Milk Weeds and Palm Trees.

I was watching TV this morning, when my wife alerted me to this Great Blue Heron with a Fish in it's Mouth in the backyard between our Lanai and the Retention Pond. Usually, when I see a Large Bird in our backyard, by the time I go get my camera, whatever it was is long gone. Not this time, the Heron was holding the bird up and dropping it about twenty or thirty times while I was trying to Photograph it trying to stay out of sight. But the Bird was aware of my presence (as much as I tried to hide) and several times it picked up the fish and flew around to to a more distant part of the pond.

The Great Blue Heron is in the Scientific Family Ardeidae & the Scientific name is Ardea herodias.

I tried to sneak up on the bird several times at several spots along the pond trying to hide behind the Oak trees, taking hand held Photographs. Unfortunately, I didn't have my Telephoto Lens attached and my hands were very shaky. Although I took about thirty shots, these are the Best Photographs that I was able to take. I need to purchase a Blind to get ready for my next opportunity. I'm not sure what type of fish it was, but it had whiskers, but didn't look like a Cat Fish to me.

We've used this stencil before for a commission on a wall in someone's house but as we had only used it once and we need to fill all the walls in our studio building we decided to whip it out once again. This time though we thought we would try something a little different and incorporate a little thread to give the impression that the gun is going off.

The reason this came into being was because of articles I've read concerning America's gun laws and specifically the shooting and subsequent death of black teenager Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman in a gated community in Florida in February.

George Zimmerman was legally carrying a concealed weapon when he shot Trayvon Martin and was released under Florida's "stand your ground" policy, Mr Zimmerman was initially freed without charges, but due to outcry from many that included street protests which reminded many of the civil rights movement years before. This brought about the police chief being sacked and the prosecutor resigning. The stand your ground law expands on a centuries-old British legal principle that permits the use of deadly force in self-defence of your own home and also grants immunity from arrest, detention and prosecution. Due to the public outcry, six weeks later Mr Zimmerman was charged with second degree murder and is currently out on bail awaiting trial.

Professor Mark Hoekstra of Texas A&M University in Houston said making the use of deadly force permissible has come at a price. He studied its effect in 21 states:

"In terms of homicides, what we show…there is about an 8% increase in the homicide rate caused by these laws…that is about 600 additional homicides per year."

Being from the UK we can only watch this kind of case and wonder. What on earth would London be like if people were legally carrying concealed weapons? We seem to have enough trouble as it is never mind if anyone over the age of 18 could legally buy themselves a gun...

Cheers

My fascination with hillside letters includes the idea of understanding how they are made. In the spirit of adventure, this requires getting close to them. Thus I visited the big "U" above Salt Lake City. The monster is solid concrete, painted white. It has lamps embedded along its edges that are turned on for certain events. A plaque at its base explains the history of the thing. The vertical sections of the letter are about ten feet (3m) wide. WikiMapia aerial view of the letter.

I set out to drive to the letter but discovered that it is impossible to do so---the letter is on New Bedford Drive, inside a gated community. But I got close to it (end of Tomahawk Drive) and walked a short distance on an asphalt path to New Bedford Drive. Finding one's way around---especially for an outsider---is a challenge because the streets in that area are a maze, with several dead-ends. But it's fun to be disoriented in that area because the houses are so nice-looking ($$$).

It was not enough for me to merely gaze at the letter from below. I had to get another view of it, preferably one that would reveal a sweeping panorama. However, I disavow any knowledge of having scrambled up the path at right to reach the top of the letter. I also disavow any knowledge of having enjoyed the view from the top. Furthermore, I disavow any knowledge of having used Joe Tripod---with legs extended---as a third leg to make the descent of the steep path safer.

I hate the idea of gated communities.

Commanding attention at the gated entry of San Francisco’s exclusive Sea Cliff neighborhood, this regal white mansion is a showpiece of Neoclassical Revival architecture. Crowned with a balustraded rooftop and surrounded by lush, sculpted gardens, the residence is a pristine example of early 20th-century grandeur. Fluted Corinthian columns frame the arched main entrance, while decorative ironwork and expansive bay windows evoke the elegance of European palaces.

Sea Cliff is known for its dramatic ocean views, prestigious homes, and architectural diversity, but this estate is arguably one of its most iconic. Its white façade gleams even under overcast skies, offering a powerful contrast to the manicured greenery that wraps the property. The crisp symmetry, ornamental detailing, and pedimented window casings suggest a design inspired by classical ideals of beauty and order—perhaps the work of a society architect at the height of San Francisco’s Golden Age.

Flanking the drive are two stone pillars etched with “Sea Cliff,” reinforcing the sense of entrance not just to a property, but to a rarified world. These historic gateposts mark one of the city’s most sought-after enclaves, home to titans of industry, celebrity residents, and long-held secrets. The estate's elevated position provides unobstructed views toward the Pacific and the Golden Gate Bridge, though its serene gardens offer a private retreat from the city below.

This mansion is more than a residence—it's a symbol of Sea Cliff’s enduring appeal and one of the finest preserved examples of classical architecture in a city that celebrates variety. For lovers of architectural history and refined design, this is San Francisco at its most majestic.

I went for a short walk around the community this afternoon. I took a few photos along the way. This is one of them.

Since moving to the desert in 2006 I've been intrigued by gated communities. I often wonder if they are to keep bad out or us in. LOL

This is an anonymously published postcard which has the typical German colourisation of an early divided back postcard. It was posted in December 1905 and shows the Dulwich Tollgate during winter after a heavy snowfall. I used College Road countless times during the 1970s and 1980s but as I rode a motorcycle I never paid the toll which I believe is now £1.20 for a car. The Toll gate has changed a bit since 1905, there is now a white toll booth in the centre of the road and payment is now accepted by swipe and pay, Apple pay and cash. It is the last remaining tollgate in London having been established in 1789, the road is private from the junction with the South Circular road in the north to the junction with Fountain Drive to the south. The view is looking north towards the South Circular and on the left through the trees are the Dulwich College buildings. The road to the right past the house now leads to a modern gated community which in the mid-1980s was the home of Mrs. Thatcher, the then Prime Minister.
