This is the famous Namdaemun gate - gateway to the Namdaemun marketplace; a structure that survived both WWII and The Korean War, but sustained fire damage due to arson (reportedly a disgruntled land developer who'd burned another monument years before). It was rebuilt in 2008. Sorry the picture isn't better.

Gate system proposal for clients seeking "Old World" charm
Influenced by the Basque reion of Gipuzkoa in Northern Spain, this gate system takes elements of villages and homes along the hilly and green mountainous landscape. This gate system is a combination of hardwood, iron, metal trim and masonry.
The Golden Gate in the Eastern Wall around the Old City of Jerusalem. Jesus entered Jerusalem through this gate on Palm Sunday. It has been sealed since the 1500s.
This is the old gate at Pfullendorf. It no longer takes traffic, and just sits alone at the top of the main pedestrian only shopping street.

Within an hour's drive of ancient Pingyao is the Zhangbi Underground Castle. Though a bit of a misnomer (in my opinion), it is still an interesting place to see.
There are really two aspects to Zhangbi. The first is the underground. It's not a castle at all, but rather a system of defense tunnels that were built during the Sui Dynasty (581 A.D. - 618 A.D.)
They were never actually used as defense tunnels to my knowledge, but the fascinating part is the extensiveness with which they were constructed. There are caves for soldiers, prisoners, the general, lookout chambers were built up to the ground level, etc.
There are more than 1,500 meters of tunnels built on three levels with the deepest reaching 26 meters (about 80 feet). The underground exits are constructed at the base of a mountain/hill.
The second aspect is the above ground component, Zhangbi Cun (Village). It's a Yuan Dynasty village (~800 years old) and the buildings in the old village date to that time. There are a few temples, but it's still a living, breathing village -- measuring about 250 meters by 250 meters, so quite small -- where the majority of residents are octogenarians. (The younger residents have relocated nearby to the "new village," which we didn't see.)
Besides the village and tunnels, there are a few structures -- performance stages, temples, a watch tower -- just outside the south gate that are part of the tour.
Zhangbi, like the Wang Family Courtyard, is a short distance from old Pingyao and tours here can be arranged at most any guesthouse in the old city.

The lych gate at All Saints Henley Brook was built in 1929 to commemorate the centenary of the establishment of the Swan River Colony and the furthest point reached by Captain James Stirling in his exploration of the river. That's a heavy load for a simple lych gate.
This is the gate outside of a huge estate in Corinth. The entire fence is done in a beautiful iron work, which I love. But the gate is striking as well.

Growing plants and exquisite light projections will greet audiences at the Macquarie Street entrance to the Royal Botanic Gardens at the Palace Garden Gate as part of an inventive installation designed to literally bring to life Elizabeth Macquarie’s passion for all things botanical.
Mrs Macquarie loved landscapes and, as an amateur watercolourist, she carried painting materials on her tours of the colony to sketch and capture the beauty of Australia’s unique scenery.
She also liked to share her passions and is said to have brought iris bulbs with her on tours as gifts for settlers. Today, many NSW communities still boast flourishing iris plants distributed by Elizabeth’s own hand.
With the help of Elizabeth Macarthur, she also pioneered hay-making in the colony and designed farms and gardens. Mrs Macquarie’s Road and the Royal Botanic Gardens itself were developed under her direction.
A frequent place of resort for Elizabeth, the Royal Botanic Gardens owes much of its efficiency to her patronage and is a fitting backdrop for one of the more intimate light showcases of Macquarie Visions.
