The Palais is a Second Empire building (built 1857-68) by architects Joseph-Louis Duc (1802–79) and Honoré Daumet (1826-1911).
Taken on Île de la Cité, one of Paris's two natural remaining islands, home to the heart of medieval Paris, and the point of France from where all distance is measured.
Late in the evening, the gates to the Cathedral Close are locked, most of the time you do not get the chance to see the wonderful carvings.
The Brandenburg Gate (German: Brandenburger Tor) is a former city gate, rebuilt in the late 18th century as a neoclassical triumphal arch, and now one of the most well-known landmarks of Germany. It is located west of the city centre of Berlin at the junction of Unter den Linden and Ebertstraße, immediately west of the Pariser Platz. One block to the north stands the Reichstag building. The gate is the monumental entry to Unter den Linden, the renowned boulevard of linden trees, which formerly led directly to the city palace of the Prussian monarchs. It was commissioned by King Frederick William II of Prussia as a sign of peace and built by Carl Gotthard Langhans from 1788 to 1791. Having suffered considerable damage in World War II, the Brandenburg Gate was fully restored from 2000 to 2002 by the Stiftung Denkmalschutz Berlin (Berlin Monument Conservation Foundation). During the post-war Partition of Germany, the gate was isolated and inaccessible immediately next to the Berlin Wall, and the area around the gate featured most prominently in the media coverage of the opening of the wall in 1989.
Throughout its existence, the Brandenburg Gate was often site for major historical events and is today considered as a symbol for the tumultuous European history but also of European unity and peace.

This is the famous Namdaemun gate - gateway to the Namdaemun marketplace; a structure that survived both WWII and The Korean War, but sustained fire damage due to arson (reportedly a disgruntled land developer who'd burned another monument years before). It was rebuilt in 2008. Sorry the picture isn't better.

Gate system proposal for clients seeking "Old World" charm
Influenced by the Basque reion of Gipuzkoa in Northern Spain, this gate system takes elements of villages and homes along the hilly and green mountainous landscape. This gate system is a combination of hardwood, iron, metal trim and masonry.
This is the old gate at Pfullendorf. It no longer takes traffic, and just sits alone at the top of the main pedestrian only shopping street.
Green Park has a grand entrance facing Queen Victoria's memorial outside Buckingham Palace. This entrance is called Canada Gate. There is a memorial to Canadians who died in the two World Wars nearby.
Green Park is known for its tree lined avenues such as the Broad Walk and the Queen's Walk, which dates back to 1730.
