Macromondays: Theme is Hobbies

I adore gadgets. Often this results in me buying things that never get used past the first day (as with this trackball (kinda like a mouse but you move the ball not the mouse)).

Every once in a while though a purchase goes well (Xbox, Iphone, D90)....

Geeking out on how to build this damn car i can tell you guys, it is not easy to build something that looks kind of ugly and make it still look good.

Took me some time to figure out how to do tthe transformation, but you know me!

I am always on duty ;)

Go Go Gadget!

UPDATE: Thanks everyone (shade tree and Electrospark) for pointing out that this is a reproduction (however loose) of the Trinity Gadget, an explosive nuclear device at the Los Alamos lab. See the comments for links. If anyone knows who took this photo, please comment below. The photo came from a piece on the Venice architecture biennale.

"I could've been as ruler of my people, like my father and my father before him. I could've learned who my mother was. I could've changed my world. Now I'm stuck here, till the end of this place or my death, whichever comes first."

This image is of a full-size replica of the first nuclear explosive device, know to the scientists and engineers who designed and constructed it as “The Gadget”. The Gadget was vaporized when it was detonated shortly before dawn on July 16, 1945, at the Trinity site in New Mexico…and human history was changed forever.

As seen at the National Atomic Testing Museum in Las Vegas, Nevada. This museum is a Smithsonian affiliate dedicated to documenting the history of US atomic weapons testing at the Nevada Test Site located northwest of Las Vegas.

New softbox from Gadget Infinity. My first ever.

The first thing I learnt was the silver lining really bounced the light. So I had to really reduce the power. Mucked about with positioning to see the different effect. And later bought in my crappy Metz 36 all manual (i.e. non-adjustable flash) to balance it out.

But this is just the one reduced flash and the new funky softbox.

Strobist info: One Metz 58 1/64. Immediate 'model' level right on light stand. (all room lights off)

If photography were a 10 rung ladder, I still feel like I'm on rung two sometimes.

Onwards and upwards....

(Pointless info: I do wish my beard would grow straight, instead of scraggy. Time to clipper it again, sadly)

Sadly no other Rescue Rangers at the photo shoot...maybe next year!

Inspector Gadget is an animated TV show from 1983, and here he is in LEGO! These are some of the characters from the series. Chief Quimby is Inspector Gadgets boss who often is seen with a pipe and delivers Gadget his mission in the form of a self-destructing message. Penny is Inspector Gadgets niece. Brain is Pennys dog. Dr. Claw is the leader of an evil organization known as M.A.D. He has a pet called M.A.D Cat.

glamour girl....

Never fear Chip n Dale, Gadget is here to rescue you!!

Hopefully it is the hard drives that are bad. Those I can easily replace. Otherwise I'll have to decide if I should go with another Drobo or go Synology.

Meanwhile, I'll get an external LaCIe or some sort of aesthetically pleasing external hard drive.

The Swiss Army knife is one of the world's most recognized gadgets.

Shot for Our Daily Challenge : "Begins With 'G'".

Recycled for "Our Daily Topic" :"Begins with 'K'".

With 6" of bell wire (~18 gauge) and the lid to a ball point pen, I improved the range of my Gadget Infinity wireless trigger from less than 20 feet to more than 200. (Final result here)

I just soldered the coiled wire onto the antenna terminal, and trimmed a pen lid with a Dremmel tool to fit in a 8/32" hole I drilled in the top of the transmitter cover. I couldn't believe it worked. My out-of-pocket cost? $0.

Caution: You can ruin your transmitter doing this. Consider yourself warned.

Lest I leave everyone with the impression that this made performance perfect, it does seem to cause more undesired flash pops. I don't know if that's strictly a result of this mod making phantom signals go farther, or the channel I'm using. I'll have to try different channels and see if I get fewer unwanted pops. That being said, the number of misfires was really low. I probably got 95% hits on the first attempt at a shoot.

Update: It's very channel sensitive. One channel pops randomly like a dance party. Another channel is perfectly well-behaved.
