Every time we pass through the Gas Street Basin I have a lump in my throat. I clearly remember travelling through here on a narrowboat for the first time with the inlaws and my wife Michelle many years ago. I was overwhelmed with the new development as the Basin was being restored and yet you could still sense the history. Now, with a combination of the modern architecture protecting the old, Gas Street Basin is worth a visit.

I don't think they sell gas anymore, and, from the looks of the accumulated vehicles, there may not be much go left either.

New phrase said to anyone when parting ways after a distanced conversation.
Maintaining utilities in "old towns" can be a tricky process when you don't want to damage buildings that are over 500 years old.
During the 13th and 14th centuries, Honiton flourished as a market town, benefiting from its strategic location along the busy Exeter to London road.
Old service station in Aurora, Indiana. I can remember when we got green or yellow stamps,,,glassware and other promotional gifts for a full service fill up....Can remember gasoline at 25.9 cents per gallon. The 1960's were the era of gas wars...low prices.

Came across this out of business and abandoned gas station in the middle of a residential area in our city. You just never know where you're going to find a great photo op. My camera goes where I go!
Out in the Mohave desert on the way to Victorville from Barstow. After Newton's towing went away, the sign, an icon on 66, stayed and is enjoying some care.

Happy first day of October!
A recreation of a local gas station which stood into the 1970s. There was a Chrysler dealer that used to stand to the left, but I haven't recreated that. Yet.
Here some facts about gas stations:
The world’s first gas station is widely considered to have opened in 1905 in St. Louis, Missouri, USA. It was established by the Automobile Gasoline Company, a subsidiary of the Shell Oil Company. Before this, gasoline was typically sold at general stores, pharmacies, or even from barrels at blacksmith shops.
This early gas station was a dedicated facility designed specifically to dispense gasoline to automobiles, marking a significant shift in infrastructure for the growing number of car owners. It had a simple hand pump and a large visible storage tank, setting the stage for the evolution of modern fueling stations.
However, another key milestone came in 1913, when the Gulf Refining Company opened what many consider the first modern gas station in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This one featured a canopy, uniformed attendants, and paved driveways — elements that would become standard in service stations later on.
So while St. Louis had the earliest form, Gulf’s Pittsburgh station is often credited with pioneering the modern gas station model.
And another fact: Bertha Benz, wife of Karl Benz (inventor of the first practical automobile), made the world’s first long-distance car trip in 1888.
During her journey, she purchased fuel (ligroin, a petroleum solvent) from a pharmacy in Wiesloch, Germany. And that again is not too far, from where I live :-) And even closer to my job....

Ruins of a gas station formerly owned by a man named Ed Young. In the late 1920's during prohibition he discovered he could make more money selling moonshine than gas, so he sold a lot of moonshine.
if you think it looks familiar it should, this also appears in my book, Abandoned Texas: Under A Lone Star Moon on pages 54 & 55.
