Not only was this old firetruck out of gas, but the gas was out of gas.

The setting sun catches the side of the vertical retort building (1932) at the site of the old Launceston Gas Company. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Launceston_Gasworks

In 1826 Launceston, like most cities was running on sperm whale oil for their lamps. But in 1844, Dr William Pugh (a pioneer of anesthetic medicine) produced a means by which he could convert coal into methane gas to light his house. This was an idea that took off quickly around the world and gas companies were formed to mass produce methane gas from coal.

In 1858 the Launceston Gas Company was formed and on 5 April 1860 the city turned on its gas powered street lights for the first time. In 1932 the vertical retort building we see here (where the actual conversion process was carried out) was built. It was a far more efficient and larger means of producing more gas. Most of the coal was actually shipped in from the Hunter Valley and down the Tamar to the wharf directly outside the main entrance to the gasworks.

By the 1970s LPG had become more convenient and a cheaper form of gas and so the conversion processing plant was shut down.

So this is my tribute to yesteryear. Enjoy it while it lasts. It was also part of my personal challenge to only use a 50mm lens.

Am I the only one who has ever done this? I worked out several variations of this shot with this one being the one I liked the least. I deleted all of the supposedly "bad' ones along with the original. A few days later I discovered that this was the only one I had left. So not my best work but it is what I have!

The buildings used as sets for the program were allowed to fall into disrepair after the show wrapped up production. They were purchased by an entrepreneur who converted them into a museum and souvenir shop. The set was demolished in November 2016.

On 28 September 2014, the building that was used as the FOO[D] MAR[KE]T, the local grocery store in the series, was destroyed in a fire. The grain elevator was destroyed in a fire on November 5, 2021, about two weeks after the building used for depicting Dog River's police station collapsed.

During the time of locally generated town gas from coal distillation, the 'town' or 'coal' gas was stored in metal gas holders often incorrectly called 'gasometers'..

An inner bottomless tank contains the gas and it rises and falls on a water seal. Tracks on the six upright pillars guide the tank. In any city or town they would dominate the skyline. This one at Fakenham, Norfolk, is a relatively tiny version enough for a small town and built in 1888.

All Elements at their Best...

Seattle, WA

Gas Works Park, located on a promontory extending from the north shore of Lake Union, is a Seattle Landmark and National Register of Historic Places listed park. The site was originally proposed for a park in the 1903 Olmsted Report, but was subsequently developed as a gas works plant in 1906 by the Seattle Gas Light Company. The coal and oil gasification plant manufactured the gas that supplied the city until 1956, when new sources of gas and energy arrived in Seattle. The site was a toxic, inhospitable environment that evolved into one of the first postindustrial landscape to be transformed into a public park. Landscape architect Richard Haag designed the masterplan, incorporating remnants from the gas plant. Bioremediation methods, innovative for the time, were incorporated into the design to "clean and green" the contaminated soil. The Great Mound, also known as Kite Hill, opened to the public on August 31, 1973, and the park was fully open to the public in July 1976.

The Australian Imperial Force experienced gas attacks in most actions on the Western Front.

Gas bombardment of a wood at Messines led to 1,374 casualties, of which 310 were fatal.

Gas masks saved lives but also caused fatalities. They were extremely uncomfortable and hampered the movement of the men, inducing fatigue, disorientation and confusion.

This [GAS] Susen mini dress has such a great look with its plunging V neckline and sexy split hem. Since it is a bit revealing, I toned it down with some cardigan knitwear to lend it a cute and casual vibe.

It fits Legacy (+Perky Petite ), Reborn, Kupra (+ Kups), Prima Petite (+ Busty), Slink Hourglass, Belleza Freya, and Maitreya (+Petite) mesh bodies.
