Southern Railway EMD E8 units being sanded at the Ivy City Railroad Yard in Washington, D.C., June 1976. This is a four unit set consisting of A-units only, with the last unit out of sight in this view. The locomotives are being sanded and will be re-fulled plus watered along with other maintenance items being performed including washing and inspections prior to departure on the next Southern Crescent to New Orleans via Atlanta. In the foreground is a large quantity of jointed section rail. Still at this time the Southern Railway was not a member of Amtrak and continued to operate its own trains, just as the Denver & Rio Grande Western did at this time. This facility was primarily an Amtrak property. In the background beyond the weeds to the left an unseen is the Amtrak Northeast Corridor. Next to the sanding tower structure is a covered hopper that is used to deliver fine dry sand for the locomotives.

Looks like there might be a small leak at the top of the gas tank of the 1800e

Update no. 2! And also the last WIP picture I’m going to post, since the model is pretty much done (and I don’t want to spoil any more of the model until it’s unveiling). The only two big areas that need work are the canopy plus it’s hinging mechanism and the inlet of the plane. The exhaust, although not on this picture, is done and in fact already attached.

Furthermore, I also need to build the hardpoints and weapons/ sensors. I'm planning on giving this one a full weapons/ sensors load-out as it makes the plane so menacing (In my modest opinion at least). The AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles are already in place, although they may be fitted elsewhere for the definitive version (Note that one missile has pink strips instead of brown: This is simply because I ran out of brown 1x2 round plates). Apart from de AIM-120s, I think two or four Mk83 Paveway II bombs, A centerline fueltank plus two additional wing-mounted fueltanks and maybe two AIM-9 sidewinders or Python 4 Air-to-air Missiles.

This photo was taken at Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station during the 2014 Winter season.

I think its once a month, these back up fuel tanks are dipped to make sure the fuel levels haven't changed since the last measurement. These tanks are far from the station (about a mile) at a place we call the area, "The End of the World"

TOP secret :)

Welders inside a large liquid hydrogen tank for NASA's Space Launch System at the Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans are plugging holes left after the tank was assembled. Using frictional heating and forging pressure, friction stir welding produces high-strength bonds virtually free of defects.

The process transforms metals from a solid state into a "plastic-like" state and uses a rotating pin tool to soften, stir and forge a bond between two metal sections to form a uniform welded joint. At the beginning and end of each weld, holes remain where the rotating pin tool enters and exits the metal. Six 22-foot-tall barrels and two domed caps were joined together to create the qualification test article, which measures an astounding 27.5 feet in diameter and over 130 feet long.

Qualification test articles, like the one shown here, closely replicate flight hardware and are built using identical processing procedures. The liquid hydrogen tank, a liquid oxygen tank, four RS-25 engines and other elements form SLS's core stage, which also serves as the rocket's structural backbone.

SLS -- the most powerful rocket in the world -- along with NASA's Orion spacecraft will send astronauts deeper into space than ever before, including on the agency's journey to Mars.

As the sun was setting in Chadwick Il. I headed across the tracks from the club to catch this Glowing CREX #1203 heading into the setting sun.

Imagine a giant skyscraper, but hollow and filled with people making rockets. That's what the VAB is. To really get a sense of the size of this thing, look at the outline of the man standing in the distance, his body backlit by the door.

The VAB, or Vehicle Assembly Building, is the worlds largest single-story building, and it's where NASA assembles many of the rockets, including the mighty Saturn V. It's also the tallest building in the US that's not in a downtown area. It's situated at Launch Complex 39 at the Kennedy Space Center, and it's awesome dot com.

The thing is so big that it even has its own weather system. In fact, on humid days it can even rain inside the building! In my photo below, you are really only seeing part of it. Off to the right, they are fueling up the Atlantis for its upcoming mission. Staring through the girders from another angle, you can easily see the giant orange tank going through its pre-launch ordeal.

Getting into this place was very difficult. I felt privileged to even get through the various security screenings and get the governmental approval to go inside. They let in little groups of us from the Tweetup, and I have to thank Stephanie Schierholz for making it all happen. It's one of the mysterious places on earth I've always wanted to visit, so I was very excited to be inside. My next goal is to get back inside and get up higher... perhaps even get in while they are prepping the next rocket.

I have many more shots of this building that I'll be sharing in coming weeks and months... you guys know how I like to keep these threads and stories open for a long time!
