The RN fuel depot at Invergordon is a unique and I'm sure often forgotten relic from Britain's once world dominating naval power. As the Royal Navy transitioned from coal fired boilers to oil in the First World War there was an urgent need for vast amounts of heavy fuel oil to be stored. Invergordon was one solution to this, and it was so valuable it was used until the 1950s.
What is accessible today are all of the above ground tanks, pump house, boiler houses and a moderately sized generator house.
Interestingly, while above ground fuel storage was cost effective and easy to manage, the threat from air attack that emerged during the Second World War resulted in additional underground storage tanks being constructed nearby at Inchindown. A similar evolution took place at Lyness in Orkney where above ground storage was supplemented with underground tunnel tanks.
