Another Bodak project submission, this one titled Black and White.

I wanted to do something that worked just using black and white, rather than just a B&W conversion. My initial thought was a couple of chess pieces... I was toying with the idea of a black surface with two white chess pieces, frontlighting on and backlighting the other so it was a (black) silhouette.

In the end, I've just been too busy with other bits and pieces to get that figured out (and it would have taken a *lot* of work to get right!).

So, this morning, I had another think about black and white things, and whilst playing the piano, I actually opened my eyes and noticed the keys!

If you've been following my 365, you'll know I've started playing around with off-camera flash, so I had the idea of very low angle flash casting long shadows off the black notes, and a direct from-above shooting position. And here it is.

I did clean the keys first, but unforunately I made the amateurish mistake of doing it with a tissue and it's left little fibres all over the place. I've cloned quite a few out, but if I do this again it will get a proper clean with spray and a lint-free cloth! (Consider it a lesson learnt!)

Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve SNR, Los Angeles County, CA, 4/9/2008

Linhof Master Technika 2000 camera, 300mm Nikkor-M f/9 lens, Fujicolor Pro 160S film, 55 megapixels

In spring of 2008 I spent several days exploring and photographing the flowers at the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve in Los Angeles County, CA. The abundance of flowers at the reserve varies greatly from year to year depending upon the weather. 2008 was quite beautiful with plenty of poppies! There was also plenty of wind the first few days of my trip, making photography very challenging. But with all that wind came some dramatic clouds like the ones seen here over these rolling hills! The Poppy Reserve is at an elevation ranging from 2,600 to 3,000 feet above sea level in the Mojave Desert climate zone. In 1903 the California poppy became the state flower of California.

While taking this photo on self-timer I actually saw a spider and this was the look on my face. Invisible Children, in case you don't know, is an organization helping the children in Uganda. These children are forced to fight in a war and kidnapped from their homes at night. Invisible Children clubs nationwide are fundraising to help the situation.
