At Kirkwood Mountain Resort in California, they use a special snowcat to prepare the halfpipe for riders. In this photo the snowcat snowblows the fresh snow we received, out of the pipe.

I took this of a fruit tray that I had for a baby shower that I held for a friend.

Fresh [298/365] - My mission today was to make it to Granville Island. Having only been to Vancouver a few times in recent years, and being too stubborn to read a map, I anticipated that Ryan would be the navigator for the day. Equally stubborn, he refused to lead the way, insisting that I figure it out on my own... using a map. Ugh. I reluctantly followed the map, taking us on a slight detour... but eventually we made it to Granville Island. I love wandering the markets... fresh fruits and vegetables... much better than your typical grocery store variety. Ryan bought me a beautiful calla lily (one of my favorite flowers!), and we feasted on perogies, salad rolls, and gelato before heading back to the city in the pouring rain. He headed to a hockey game while I caught up with my friend Jess over a cup of coffee. Such a fun day!

We cooked some corn kernals in a saucepan with a sablespoon of oil and quickly ended up with a pan full of popcorn, warm and ready to eat. Day 21 of my 365 project. 2011-01-21

I love a bit of fresh citrus squeezed into my water in the morning. This lime produced almost no juice (I maybe got 5 drops), but the pulp stood straight out after I squeezed it!

Once large enough, Atlantic salmon change into the grilse phase, where they become ready to return to precise fresh water tributary in which they were born. After returning to their natal streams, the salmon will cease eating altogether prior to spawning. Although largely unknown, odor — the exact chemical signature of that stream — is suspected to play an important role in how salmon return to the area where they hatched. Once above around 250 g, the fish no longer become prey for birds and many fish, although seals do prey upon them. Seals that commonly eat Atlantic salmon are the gray and common seals. Survivability to this stage has been estimated at between 14 and 53%

So, I went to my local Ralphs Supermarket today to buy some Valentines Day presents (I know, Procrastination, thy name is Edwin!) So anyways, this store looks normal, right? WRONG! It seems that this Ralphs Supermarket is closing, I know, I was shocked when my dad pointed the sign out at the entrance, Ralphs at California Oaks is not going with a BANG but with a whimper, let's go in!

Fresh Snowfall

(Kay Hoffman)

A fresh snowfall in winter

Always brings my heart delight

When I waken in the morning

To a wonderland of white.

No pathway leading here or there

To mark the hurried pace,

Just fragile etchings in the snow

That wayward branches trace.

How cozy rests each little home

Knee-deep in drifts of snow;

Smoke curling up from chimneys

Adds to the friendly glow.

Fir trees don a regal look

In lavish ermine wrap;

Lampposts too, wear winter's best

White muffler and top hat.

Our little town so peaceful is

A wonderland of white,

A picture postcard sent from God

To bring our hearts delight.

We take for granted the fresh product all around us living on the islands. Eggs from farm to shelf in a day. Or if you seek, farm to your table same day.

A hope for fresh water

Thick and warm unagi syrup coats each tender nugget of the bite of sushi rice cowering beneath the shelter of its rich fresh water eel covering. Adding bright grassy and floral aromas was the sprig of ?? that I had encountered before during a kaiseki meal at Tokyo's Kisso but one whose name still evades me. It remained a mystery even after asking Chef Kaji about it.

Update: I think it just might be a kinome leaf.

When you see drops of liquid at the tips or along the edges of leaves you are witnessing the effects of something called guttation. Guttation is caused when root pressure pushes water up from the roots into leaves and stems. This typically occurs during the night when stomata are closed and transpiration is over for the day. Guttation should not be confused with morning dew. Dew will cover the entire surface area of the leaf. Guttation occurs only at the tip or along the edges.
