It's a while since I've been out with the camera, so I decided to break the New Year duck with a walk around Blackstone Edge in Calderdale.
Blackstone Edge is a bleak, rocky outcrop overlooking the Lancashire towns of Rochdale and Littleborough and this reservoir is just behind it. The area has quite a few reservoirs and the pylons on the left-side of the image are from a nearby dam producing hydro-electric power for the nearby conurbations.
If it looks cold - you'd be absolutely right. I've never been so relieved to get back home and clamp my hands round a hot cup of tea.

White Horse in a White World
This iconic lighthouse is called Het Paard, which is Dutch for The Horse. It's situated on a peninsula in the Markermeer, a huge fresh water lake. It's very rare that it's frozen over like this. The last time was probably in 2012.

It will be k-k-cold this weekend. The temperature can drop to -15 degrees celcius and that means of course only one thing: skating! After a few nights of good frost we could skate on February 12, 2021 at the Gouwsea. Waterland in the winter is a real skater’s paradise. As temperatures plunge across Europe, many are cursing the cold. But not in the Netherlands. Many are hoping for further frigid conditions. Today my daughter Samantha and friend Casper are joying me skating. A historical moment since crossing the Gouwsea by skates is such a rare occurrence. Today we skate 12km from Uitdam, de Nes to Marken and back, such a beautiful sea of ice to enjoy. An infinitely beautiful sight on this icy sea in 2021. It was a pleasure. The meadows here are white, the Gouwzee completely frozen and the breath comes out of my mouth in small gray puffs. Put your hands behind your back. Breathe calmly. I enjoy the sound of the irons over the ice and the beautiful view of the snowy landscape . The ice surface is great here. Besides ice skating Dutch also love Ice yachting. This is the sport of sailing and racing iceboats and is very popular in the Netherlands. Ice boats are racing at a speed of 100 km an hour over the ice of the Gouwsea. The centre of ice yachting is in Monnickendam.
Today 12th of February 2021 we got the opportunity to go ice skating on real ice instead of going to an ice rink. A good freeze only comes from a win in the climatic lottery. Thus the chance for our Dutch to be wild adventurers on their own land comes only every few years. We glide across solidified, frosted lakes with fish frozen into the ice. The Gouwsea in the winter are a real skater’s paradise. In Monnickendam the ice is only suitable for ice yachting. From here the ice yachtings are crossing the Gouwzee to Marken. We visit Monnickendam. From Monnickendam to Marken island is about 4km of disctance. It is not often that the Gouwsea is completely frozen.

De Gouwzee is een paradijs voor schaatsers uit het westen van Nederland, omdat het meestal het eerste grootschalige gebied is waar men goed kan schaatsen op natuurijs. Maar het blijft een historische gebeurtenis. Vele schaatsenrijders zoeken vandaag de bevroren oppervlakte van de Gouwzee op voor een schaatsrit langs de dijk van Uitdam, De Nes naar Marken. Een mooie rit van zo'n 12km. Een oneindig mooi gezicht op deze ijszee anno 2021. Het was genieten. De weilanden zijn hier wit, de Gouwzee totaal bevroren en de adem komt in kleine grijze pufjes uit mijn mond. Handen op de rug. Rustig ademen. Ik geniet van het geluid van de ijzers over het ijs en het prachtige uitzicht over de besneeuwde landschap. Het ijs is geweldig hier. De ijszeilers hebben hun plek in Monnickendam. Hier is het ijs te slecht om te schaatsen, maar voor de ijszeilers geen probleem. Vanaf hier steken ze de Gouwzee over naar Marken. Een oneindig mooi gezicht op deze ijszee anno 2021. Het was genieten. Jong en oud staan op het ijs, zelfs koek en zopie is present bij de zeilclub van Monnickendam. Met spectaculaire snelheden van wel 80 tot 100 kilometer per uur razen de ijszeilers over bevroren meren en plassen: ijszeilers hebben deze dagen de tijd van hun leven. Vanaf Monnickendam naar Marken is ongeveer een afstand van 4 km. Het komt niet vaak voor dat de Gouwzee helemaal bevroren is.
It is at the darkest moments of the year when the earth is quietly resting, the nights are at their longest and the days so very short, the trees mostly stark and leafless and the skies often gloomy and grey, that Mother Nature can send us signs of hope as she did here, just two days before the winter solstice of 2010.
During a spirit lifting walk on the Staffordshire and Worcestershire canal in Wolverhampton, the winter afternoon sun cast an enchanted light onto a tranquil, snow covered scene and infused a warm, atmospheric and magical glow into the shimmering mist on the surface of the water....
The winter solstice is the turning point, the start of a new solar year, the rebirth of the sun and the beginning of the cycle of life all over again. From here, the balance shifts as darkness becomes conquered by the light, the days grow longer and the sun starts to warm the earth and bring hope once more....
Yuletide greetings to all of my contacts in the wonderful Flickr community and to anyone else who has viewed, commented on, or chosen as a favourite, any of my photographs over this past year. Once again, your kind and encouraging words and the inspirational images you share have been a huge inspiration to me and, as always, your continuing support is very much appreciated.
May we all enjoy the inspiration and magic of this time of year as our predecessors intended rather than as the occasion of commercialisation and self gain which, for too many people it has now, unfortunately, become.

We in the Preston area have had next to no snow, as usual, so I decided to head out to Yorkshire this morning to photograph one of my favourite waterfalls as I knew it would look pretty good thanks to the recent cold weather. I knew that the lane up to it would be blocked, which it was, so didn't even attempt to go up it. Instead I decided to park just out of Settle and walk in. I left the car in a lay by just off the A65, and set off up a bridlepath on a route I plotted the night before. It was three miles uphill, through some pretty deep drifts and over very hard packed ice. Surprisingly, there was very little snow on the fields, the vicious wind had blown it all into the sides. Thankfully I had gone prepared, and took my Kahtoola microspikes and trekking poles, which were appreciated. The microspikes are superb in that the only other option in such conditions are full crampons, mine are step in crampons so I have to wear my winter boots too. These little beauties simply pull on over any decent boot and give you a grip as good as crampons. Anyway, back to the plot, I arrived at the top of scaleber, for anyone who has visited this place, they will know it is a very steep descent on dodgy ground. Given the howling wind, the sticks and spikes were brilliant. I arrived at the foot of the waterfall, and climbed up a level to get in the falls. Amazingly, there was another couple who had made the trek there, I did think i would have the falls to myself! It was all worth the effort as you can see, they were amazing. I have never been fortunate enough to see them like this, we only have these conditions every seven or eight years or so. All in all, it was worth the effort. I think I’ll go back to the Dales tomorrow and do some more waterfalls whilst we have the perfect conditions!
I have been having some fun the last couple of days photographing freezing bubbles. It creates so many different crystal formations. Here is one rendition...
There’s a lot going on upstairs and we’re not just talking ‘smart’. This building means business when it comes to putting on a show. Observe in awe with everyone else on the street. It really is a wonder.
I had an interesting idea for a beach-set still life. All my cameras came along; the toys and the Polaroid and the digital. I arranged my items and did my shoot - - not once, but twice, because when I looked at my digital files after the first time they were all horribly blurry. It was near sunset time, (though no sun was visible) there was a dense fog rolling in, and heavy wind blew. It was freezing, I was shivering from the cold, yet despite all these factors decided to handhold. A second shoot (several days later) was inevitable. Here’s the Polaroid. The actual photo is nearly solid cream color, save for the outline of the table wood and an ever-so-faint hint of chair, but I scanned it and worked with the contrast etc. in order to ‘find’ an image. The result is sort of surreal to me.

Took a stroll in the park and slithered down the slope to get as close as I could to the water cascading over the dam. I was deeply enthralled by the rushing water, the long icicles ... and the split between them and the foaming water. As you can see from the SOOC, I slid all over this one!! I felt it could use a bit of colorful slider action!!! Did I mention I love color?

Marken is a village near Amsterdam and it occupies a peninsula in the Markermeer. It was formerly an island in the Zuiderzee. From the dike you have a magnificent view over the many mounds on Marken. The Rozewerf still got the original look of this ancient settlement which are still the characteristic and monumental buildings. It's really just on the dike that protects the water, once the Zuiderzee now the Markermeer. The area around Rozewerf was also regularly flooded after it came to be by the sea. Eventually a low dike was constructed leaving only skipped water at larger storms. Rozewerf with 12 icebreakers which are derived from the 12 apostles. The twelve wooden icebreakers dating in construction in 1872. The icebreakers have cultural and historical value because it authentic in appearance and become rare examples of de-icing facilities. Since the construction of the Dam there has been no more trouble. However, it has been affected by the drifting ice in the winter. The lighthouse 'Horse of Marken' stands on its own tiny island at the end of a narrow causeway and is almost completely surrounded by water, which makes its location so photogenic. Particularly in winter, when after a long period of frost during which the IJsselmeer was largely frozen over the thaw set in and the ice was starting to drift you could shoot spectacular pictures here. Fishermen went with a sliding carriage, fishing net, long stick and axe for ice fishing like their ancestors in Marken. Fishing for sparkling and flounder was a nice additional income in those days. It looks like fun but not without risk. In the old days fishermen felt with regularity in a ice-field hole and became super cooled or even drowned.
This is the Marken lighthouse, given its name due to its shape ('paard' means 'horse' in dutch). The original was built in 1700, then reconstructed on top of the early foundations in 1839. It's still in use today. Next to the lighthouse you can see hummocks. A hummock is a boss or rounded knoll of ice rising above the general level of an ice-field, Hummocky ice is caused by slow and unequal pressure in the main body of the packed ice, and by unequal structure and temperature at a later period. Photo of how thin reed stems can freeze in a special way because of the undulating water. it's almost impossible to walk over it and take a good picture.
Marken is een voormalig eiland, nu een schiereiland, in het Markermeer. De Rozewerf is een buurtschap gelegen op Marken. Rozewerf is van oorsprong een terp, dat een werf wordt genoemd. Rozewerf ligt echt maar net aan de dijk die het beschermt van het water, ooit de Zuiderzee thans het Markermeer. Het gebied rondom Rozewerf stond ook regelmatig onderwater nadat het aan zee kwam te liggen. Uiteindelijk werd een lage dijk aangelegd waardoor er alleen bij wat grotere stormen water oversloeg. Sinds de aanleg van de Afsluitdijk heeft men daar ook geen last meer van. Wel heeft men last van het kruiende ijs in de winter. Daarom staan er ook ijsbrekers net buiten de dijk in het Markermeer. Er staan 12 ijsbrekers welke zijn afgeleid van de 12 apostelen. De twaalf houten ijsbrekers dateren in aanleg uit 1872. De vuurtoren 'Paard van Marken' staat op zijn eigen piepkleine eilandje aan het einde van een smalle dijk en is bijna volledig omgeven door water, wat de ligging zo fotogeniek maakt. Het Paard van Marken is een vuurtoren van Marken. De vuurtoren is gebouwd in 1839 en staat op de oostelijke punt van het eiland. De toren heeft een hoogte van 16 meter en een lichtbereik van 16,7 km. Vooral in de winter met het kruiend ijs kan je hier spectaculaire foto's maken. Vissers gingen net als hun voorouders in Marken met een slede, visnet, lange stok en bijl ijsvissen. In het dikke ijs moesten ze eerst een bijt hakken. Daarin werden dan lange stokken met een net eraan geschoven om de spiering binnen te halen. Het was in die tijd een mooi bijverdienste. Het ziet er leuk uit, maar niet zonder risico. Vroeger vielen vissers met regelmaat door het ijs en raakten onderkoeld of verdronken zelfs. Foto genomen langs de dijk naar de Vuurtoren. Zie hoe dunne rietstengels door het golvende water op een aparte manier kunnen bevriezen Het bijna onmogelijk om er overheen te lopen en er een mooie foto van te maken.

The hard winter freeze has come to Parsonsfield over the past few day's bringing record setting cold and strong North West winds.
Wind blown water spray on Long Pond has created many ice formations along the eastern shoreline.

Rising 1270 metres (around 4,000 feet) above Hobart's harbour and the wide Derwent River, Mount Wellington provides a wilderness experience within 20 minutes' drive of the city and is much loved by locals.
The 21-kilometre (13-mile) drive to the summit takes you from temperate rainforest to sub-alpine flora and glacial rock formations, ending in panoramic views of Hobart, Bruny Island, South Arm and the Tasman Peninsula.

A supremely cold morning greeted wiffsmith23 and myself when we returned here after the previous days shoot .......for some reason all my lens and filters kept fogging up ...i basically had a nightmare ...one of only a few shots i managed that morning ...That i liked that is :(

Sinds de aanleg van de Afsluitdijk heeft men daar ook geen last meer van. Wel heeft men last van het kruiende ijs in de winter. Daarom staan er ook ijsbrekers net buiten de dijk in het Markermeer. Er staan 12 ijsbrekers welke zijn afgeleid van de 12 apostelen. De twaalf houten ijsbrekers dateren in aanleg uit 1872. De vuurtoren 'Paard van Marken' staat op zijn eigen piepkleine eilandje aan het einde van een smalle dijk en is bijna volledig omgeven door water, wat de ligging zo fotogeniek maakt. Het Paard van Marken is een vuurtoren van Marken. De vuurtoren is gebouwd in 1839 en staat op de oostelijke punt van het eiland. De toren heeft een hoogte van 16 meter en een lichtbereik van 16,7 km. *[We had such a good time at this new Hollywood Studio's exhibit back in Dec/2019 that we came back for the grand opening week of a new 2nd exhibit that they just completed. Unfortunately, many of the exhibits were shut down (including this new one) because it was too cold, the machinery does not operate properly if the outside temp is below 40 degrees, and we were at about 35 degrees! LOL For Florida that is very low! So, I just took all the new exterior shots.

for a company holiday-party we checked it out. As expected, it was jammed in the daytime with a 90+ minute wait for the ride. We went back in the evening (with a 35 minute wait) and it was very cool! With everything all lit-up at night it was fantastic and we truly felt
as if we were on the Galaxy's Edge! A must for the Star Wars fan!]

It takes over 16 hours for the 308 mile distance and it runs once a week apparently.

The saunas are very popular on the quayside with folks going to cool off in the cold sea water before returning for more punishment in the hot sauna !!
Recent evidence of snow on the steps is a clue as to how cold it was, another day and the harbour was iced over 4 inches thick in places until the ships cleared a route through.

It will be k-k-cold this weekend. The temperature can drop to -15 degrees celcius and that means of course only one thing: skating! After a few nights of good frost we could skate on February 12, 2021 at the Gouwsea. Waterland in the winter is a real skater’s paradise. As temperatures plunge across Europe, many are cursing the cold. But not in the Netherlands. Many are hoping for further frigid conditions. Today my daughter Samantha and friend Casper are joying me skating. A historical moment since crossing the Gouwsea by skates is such a rare occurrence. Today we skate 12km from Uitdam, de Nes to Marken and back, such a beautiful sea of ice to enjoy. An infinitely beautiful sight on this icy sea in 2021. It was a pleasure. The meadows here are white, the Gouwzee completely frozen and the breath comes out of my mouth in small gray puffs. Put your hands behind your back. Breathe calmly. I enjoy the sound of the irons over the ice and the beautiful view of the snowy landscape . The ice surface is great here. Besides ice skating Dutch also love Ice yachting. This is the sport of sailing and racing iceboats and is very popular in the Netherlands. Ice boats are racing at a speed of 100 km an hour over the ice of the Gouwsea. The centre of ice yachting is in Monnickendam.
Today 12th of February 2021 we got the opportunity to go ice skating on real ice instead of going to an ice rink. A good freeze only comes from a win in the climatic lottery. Thus the chance for our Dutch to be wild adventurers on their own land comes only every few years. We glide across solidified, frosted lakes with fish frozen into the ice. The Gouwsea in the winter are a real skater’s paradise. In Monnickendam the ice is only suitable for ice yachting. From here the ice yachtings are crossing the Gouwzee to Marken. Na een paar nachten goede vorst konden we op 12 februari 2021 schaatsen op de Gouwzee. Na een extra nacht van vorst ligt het ijs er redelijk goed bij. Eindelijk weer heerlijk ijs om voor schaatsliefhebbers de ijzers onder te binden. Er kan heerlijk kilometers geschaatst worden tussen Uitdam, De Nes en Marken. Vandaag gaat mijn dochter Samantha mij met vriend Casper. Je beleeft de natuur op plekken waar je normaal niet kan komen. De Gouwzee is een paradijs voor schaatsers uit het westen van Nederland, omdat het meestal het eerste grootschalige gebied is waar men goed kan schaatsen op natuurijs. Maar het blijft een historische gebeurtenis. Vele schaatsenrijders zoeken vandaag de bevroren oppervlakte van de Gouwzee op voor een schaatsrit langs de dijk van Uitdam, De Nes naar Marken. Een mooie rit van zo'n 12km. Een oneindig mooi gezicht op deze ijszee anno 2021. Het was genieten. De weilanden zijn hier wit, de Gouwzee totaal bevroren en de adem komt in kleine grijze pufjes uit mijn mond. Handen op de rug. Rustig ademen. Ik geniet van het geluid van de ijzers over het ijs en het prachtige uitzicht over de besneeuwde landschap. Het ijs is geweldig hier. De ijszeilers hebben hun plek in Monnickendam. Hier is het ijs te slecht om te schaatsen, maar voor de ijszeilers geen probleem. Vanaf hier steken ze de Gouwzee over naar Marken. Een oneindig mooi gezicht op deze ijszee anno 2021. Het was genieten. Jong en oud staan op het ijs, zelfs koek en zopie is present bij de zeilclub van Monnickendam. Met spectaculaire snelheden van wel 80 tot 100 kilometer per uur razen de ijszeilers over bevroren meren en plassen: ijszeilers hebben deze dagen de tijd van hun leven.
