Marken is a village near Amsterdam and it occupies a peninsula in the Markermeer. It was formerly an island in the Zuiderzee. From the dike you have a magnificent view over the many mounds on Marken. The Rozewerf still got the original look of this ancient settlement which are still the characteristic and monumental buildings. It's really just on the dike that protects the water, once the Zuiderzee now the Markermeer. The area around Rozewerf was also regularly flooded after it came to be by the sea. Eventually a low dike was constructed leaving only skipped water at larger storms. Rozewerf with 12 icebreakers which are derived from the 12 apostles. The twelve wooden icebreakers dating in construction in 1872. The icebreakers have cultural and historical value because it authentic in appearance and become rare examples of de-icing facilities. Since the construction of the Dam there has been no more trouble. However, it has been affected by the drifting ice in the winter. The lighthouse 'Horse of Marken' stands on its own tiny island at the end of a narrow causeway and is almost completely surrounded by water, which makes its location so photogenic. Particularly in winter, when after a long period of frost during which the IJsselmeer was largely frozen over the thaw set in and the ice was starting to drift you could shoot spectacular pictures here. Fishermen went with a sliding carriage, fishing net, long stick and axe for ice fishing like their ancestors in Marken. Fishing for sparkling and flounder was a nice additional income in those days. It looks like fun but not without risk. In the old days fishermen felt with regularity in a ice-field hole and became super cooled or even drowned.

This is the Marken lighthouse, given its name due to its shape ('paard' means 'horse' in dutch). The original was built in 1700, then reconstructed on top of the early foundations in 1839. It's still in use today. Next to the lighthouse you can see hummocks. A hummock is a boss or rounded knoll of ice rising above the general level of an ice-field, Hummocky ice is caused by slow and unequal pressure in the main body of the packed ice, and by unequal structure and temperature at a later period. During the month January and February thousands of geese can be found here in Waterland. The geese are migratory, moving south or west in winter. The greylag geese fly in V- formation to save themselves energy.

Vooral in de winter met het kruiend ijs kan je hier spectaculaire foto's maken. Vissers gingen net als hun voorouders in Marken met een slede, visnet, lange stok en bijl ijsvissen. In het dikke ijs moesten ze eerst een bijt hakken. Daarin werden dan lange stokken met een net eraan geschoven om de spiering binnen te halen. Het was in die tijd een mooi bijverdienste. Het ziet er leuk uit, maar niet zonder risico. Vroeger vielen vissers met regelmaat door het ijs en raakten onderkoeld of verdronken zelfs. De Grauwe gans, grijsbruine gans met forse oranje snavel en roze poten is hier heel veel te zien in Waterland. Duizenden ganzen vliegen naar het zuiden of westen altijd in V-formatie waardoor de krachtsinspanningen over de groep worden verdeeld.

The Cumberland Ferry is closed this morning, due to the accumulation of ice on the Ottawa River (–28 Celsius this morning).

I like this Fleur-De-Lis. It reminds me the emblem of boy scout. I was a boy scout when I was little and this was really long time ago. Yes this was the story happened in the last century!

At sunrise, the activity is particularly impressive due to the frosty morning temperatures at this altitude.

The hot springs are fed by the El Tatio volcano, at the foot of which the geothermal field extends. The active volcanic arc that frames this plateau is part of South America's central volcanic zone.

Petrie Island ice fishing village is home of about 120 ice huts and it is known to be the largest in Eastern Ontario. Fishermen can expect to catch mostly pikes, perches and walleyes. It will open as soon as the ice reaches 12" in the Cumberland Bay. It usually reaches about 21" during the coldest winter months.

I had been trying to get my photos organised for the Macro Mondays Group, but the light was wrong in the flat, even with all the lights on!

I took everything outside into the garden to see if I could get better photos out there. Although I almost froze as we've had a horribly cold wind blowing all day.

I am not a bird photographer but these two young swans unexpectedly came flying over my head and started landing. I always set my camera to fast shutter speed when I'm done shooting for unexpected things. That way you are not too late and no blurry photos. Pure luck this photo and a little luck can also force you.

Ik ben geen vogel fotograaf maar deze twee jonge zwanen kwamen onverwacht boven mijn hoofd vliegen en zette de landing in. Ik zet altijd mijn camera in op snelle sluitertijd wanneer ik klaar ben met fotograferen voor onverwachte dingen. Zo ben je niet te laat en ook geen onscherpe foto's. Puur geluk deze foto en een beetje geluk kan je ook afdwingen.

Het gebied rondom Rozewerf stond ook regelmatig onderwater nadat het aan zee kwam te liggen. Uiteindelijk werd een lage dijk aangelegd waardoor er alleen bij wat grotere stormen water oversloeg. Sinds de aanleg van de Afsluitdijk heeft men daar ook geen last meer van. Wel heeft men last van het kruiende ijs in de winter. Daarom staan er ook ijsbrekers net buiten de dijk in het Markermeer. Er staan 12 ijsbrekers welke zijn afgeleid van de 12 apostelen. De twaalf houten ijsbrekers dateren in aanleg uit 1872. De vuurtoren 'Paard van Marken' staat op zijn eigen piepkleine eilandje aan het einde van een smalle dijk en is bijna volledig omgeven door water, wat de ligging zo fotogeniek maakt. Vooral in de winter met het kruiend ijs kan je hier spectaculaire foto's maken. Vissers gingen net als hun voorouders in Marken met een slede, visnet, lange stok en bijl ijsvissen. In het dikke ijs moesten ze eerst een bijt hakken. Daarin werden dan lange stokken met een net eraan geschoven om de spiering binnen te halen. Het was in die tijd een mooi bijverdienste. Het ziet er leuk uit, maar niet zonder risico. Vroeger vielen vissers met regelmaat door het ijs en raakten onderkoeld of verdronken zelfs.

The general term ice age or, more precisely, "glacial age" denotes a geological period of long-term reduction in the temperature of the Earth's surface and atmosphere, resulting in an expansion of continental ice sheets, polar ice sheets and alpine glaciers. There have been at least four major ice ages in the Earth's past. Outside these periods, the Earth seems to have been ice-free even in high latitudes. There is evidence that greenhouse gas levels fell at the start of ice ages and rose during the retreat of the ice sheets, but it is difficult to establish cause and effect (see the notes above on the role of weathering). Greenhouse gas levels may also have been affected by other factors which have been proposed as causes of ice ages, such as the movement of continents and vulcanism. Although the last glacial period ended more than 8,000 years ago, its effects can still be felt today. For example, the moving ice carved out landscape in Canada, Greenland, northern Eurasia and Antarctica. The erratic boulders, till, drumlins, eskers, fjords, kettle lakes, moraines, cirques, horns, etc., are typical features left behind by the glaciers.

Een ijstijd of glaciatie is een geologisch tijdvak waarin ijskappen voorkomen. In het Engels wordt dit een periode van ice-house genoemd, als tegenhanger van een ijskaploze periode, de greenhouse ("broeikas"). Aangezien er gletsjers liggen op bijvoorbeeld Groenland of Antarctica, leven we tegenwoordig in een ijstijd. Men neemt aan dat dit in de gehele geologische geschiedenis van de Aarde minstens vijfmaal het geval is geweest, waarvan eenmaal zelfs zo sterk dat de ijskappen van de polen vrijwel tot aan de evenaar waren opgerukt. Ook zijn er periodes dat er aanzienlijke opwarming optrad waarbij die ijskappen grotendeels waren weggesmolten. Het klimaat op Aarde wordt beïnvloed door vele factoren, zoals de intensiteit van de zonnestraling, de ligging van de continenten, de continentverplaatsingen, vulkanisme, de zeestromen, de bedekking van het land door vegetatie, het weerkaatsingsvermogen van het aardoppervlak en vele kleine andere factoren. Met behulp van klimaatmodellen wordt door wetenschappers een reconstructie van het klimaat en de klimaatveranderingen in het verleden gemaakt. Alhoewel er een zekere consensus bestaat onder wetenschappers, zijn er nog vele onzekerheden en tegenstrijdigheden in dit onderzoek.

Hierboven een foto van kruiend ijs. Zoetwatermeren kunnen spectaculair bevriezen. Grotere meren zoals het IJsselmeer (IJmeer) hierboven hebben bijna altijd wel golven, en dit werkt directe bevriezing van het wateroppervlak tegen. Eerst vormen zich kleine ijsschotsen, die naar de kust drijven onder invloed van de wind. Deze schotsen vormen zo een ijsveld op het water dat de golven dempt, en uiteindelijk vriezen alle schotsen aan elkaar vast tot een massa. Voordat dit gebeurt schuren de schotsen voortdurend langs elkaar heen en schrapen zo stukjes ijs van elkaar af; elke schots krijgt zo een witte rand. Zulk ijs is dus totaal niet geschikt om op te schaatsen. Wanneer grotere delen van het meer bevriezen beginnen de platen, die soms een paar vierkante kilometer groot zijn, langzaam tegen elkaar te bewegen onder invloed van de wind en stroming. Dit heeft kruiend ijs tot gevolg: de ijsschotsen worden met kracht gebroken en op elkaar gestapeld langs de dijken langs het meer. Dit hoeft niet alleen bij dun ijs te gebeuren; soms kruit het ijs bij een dikte van meer dan 20 cm. De stapels ijs worden dan hoog, en het geluid is oorverdovend.

After a few nights of good frost we could skate on February 12, 2021 at the Gouwsea. Waterland in the winter is a real skater’s paradise. As temperatures plunge across Europe, many are cursing the cold. But not in the Netherlands. Many are hoping for further frigid conditions. Today my daughter Samantha and friend Casper are joying me skating. A historical moment since crossing the Gouwsea by skates is such a rare occurrence. Today we skate 12km from Uitdam, de Nes to Marken and back, such a beautiful sea of ice to enjoy. An infinitely beautiful sight on this icy sea in 2021. It was a pleasure. The meadows here are white, the Gouwzee completely frozen and the breath comes out of my mouth in small gray puffs. Put your hands behind your back. Breathe calmly. I enjoy the sound of the irons over the ice and the beautiful view of the snowy landscape . The ice surface is great here. Besides ice skating Dutch also love Ice yachting. This is the sport of sailing and racing iceboats and is very popular in the Netherlands. Ice boats are racing at a speed of 100 km an hour over the ice of the Gouwsea. The centre of ice yachting is in Monnickendam.

Sailing with a boat over an ice plain, or ice sailing, is a Dutch invention from around 1600. The ice barge turned out to be attractive not only for recreational use but also as a means of transport. Nowadays ice sailing is mainly practiced by people with a passion for speed, cold and wind. Monnickendam, located on the Gouwsea, is considered the Dutch center. In Monnickendam the ice is only suitable for ice yachting. From here the ice yachtings are crossing the Gouwzee to Marken. We visit Monnickendam. From Monnickendam to Marken island is about 4km of disctance. It is not often that the Gouwsea is completely frozen. It is a nice gathering of ice sailors here in Monnickendam on the coldest days of 2021.

Na een paar nachten goede vorst konden we op 12 februari 2021 schaatsen op de Gouwzee. Na een extra nacht van vorst ligt het ijs er redelijk goed bij. Eindelijk weer heerlijk ijs om voor schaatsliefhebbers de ijzers onder te binden. Er kan heerlijk kilometers geschaatst worden tussen Uitdam, De Nes en Marken. Vandaag gaat mijn dochter Samantha mij met vriend Casper. Je beleeft de natuur op plekken waar je normaal niet kan komen. De Gouwzee is een paradijs voor schaatsers uit het westen van Nederland, omdat het meestal het eerste grootschalige gebied is waar men goed kan schaatsen op natuurijs. Maar het blijft een historische gebeurtenis. Vele schaatsenrijders zoeken vandaag de bevroren oppervlakte van de Gouwzee op voor een schaatsrit langs de dijk van Uitdam, De Nes naar Marken. Een mooie rit van zo'n 12km. Een oneindig mooi gezicht op deze ijszee anno 2021. Het was genieten. De weilanden zijn hier wit, de Gouwzee totaal bevroren en de adem komt in kleine grijze pufjes uit mijn mond. Handen op de rug. Rustig ademen. Ik geniet van het geluid van de ijzers over het ijs en het prachtige uitzicht over de besneeuwde landschap. Het ijs is geweldig hier. De ijszeilers hebben hun plek in Monnickendam. Hier is het ijs te slecht om te schaatsen, maar voor de ijszeilers geen probleem. Vanaf hier steken ze de Gouwzee over naar Marken. Een oneindig mooi gezicht op deze ijszee anno 2021. Het was genieten. Jong en oud staan op het ijs, zelfs koek en zopie is present bij de zeilclub van Monnickendam. Met spectaculaire snelheden van wel 80 tot 100 kilometer per uur razen de ijszeilers over bevroren meren en plassen: ijszeilers hebben deze dagen de tijd van hun leven. Vanaf Monnickendam naar Marken is ongeveer een afstand van 4 km. Het komt niet vaak voor dat de Gouwzee helemaal bevroren is. Het is een leuke bijeenkomst van ijszeilers hier in Monnickendam op de koudste dagen van 2021.

As the temperatures plummeted during the recent artic blast of cold weather that blew in, my backyard was like Grand Central Station. The birds were emptying the feeders in record time, and they were using the bushes outside my kitchen window as their staging area. Luckily, we were not hit by all the snow and ice that so many other states up north suffered.

Usually when the birds see us standing at the kitchen window they scatter, so getting shots through this particular window is a rarity. Today however they didn't seem to mind me quite so much.

We received a sprinkling of snow yesterday. It's very cold here in southern Manitoba right now. This is actually a good thing because it has slowed the amount of run-off into the creeks and rivers. Some areas have had to evacuate due to high water.

Bet you thought you were going to see some nudity here. (Why else would a photo like this have such a silly view count? ;)

BTW, my guess at the water temperature during this swim: 5° Celsius (41° Fahrenheit).

Mijn laatste winterse foto van het jaar? Wellicht. Inmiddels ligt er bij de Adriaan in ieder geval hoegenaamd geen ijs meer. En hoewel het ijs en de winterse sferen overal in het land práchtig waren, vind ik het toch ook wel heel fijn dat de lente nu eindelijk voelbaar begint te worden. Hoera!

Ice-Free

This might just be my last wintery shot of the year. By now, the ice at the Adriaan windmill is all but gone. And while all the ice and the winter wonderlands here in the Netherlands were absolutely beautiful, I must say that I really like that Spring is finally in the air. Hooray!

This brave little mallard duck was forging ahead out on the frozen Fox River in Batavia, Illinois on this brisk Valentine's Day morning. Temperatures ranged from -4F to +3F, or -20C to -16C using the other arbitrary scale.

Sunrise at -24C. I had to use three layers of wool clothing and double set of gloves.

I'm sorry I have'nt been around again. Me and my family have had a sad start to the new year. Three family members have passed away this January. I will get back to you later. Take care :)

Today 12th of February 2021 we got the opportunity to go ice skating on real ice instead of going to an ice rink. A good freeze only comes from a win in the climatic lottery. Thus the chance for our Dutch to be wild adventurers on their own land comes only every few years. We glide across solidified, frosted lakes with fish frozen into the ice. The Gouwsea in the winter are a real skater’s paradise. In Monnickendam the ice is only suitable for ice yachting. From here the ice yachtings are crossing the Gouwzee to Marken.
