Keys View, Joshua Tree National Park, CA

Keys View is one of the tallest peaks in the park (over 5,000 feet) - also it is the highest point you can drive up to - which was good as I was running a bit late, which happened actually a few more times during my visit to the park.

Anyway, I figured you should have a nice view up there once the sun begins to set. However, what I didn't think of was that because of the high elevation and because it's rather windy up there it gets veeeery cold around sunset... hence the title.

Here's a larger view.

I used 6 exposure for this HDR (-3, -2, -1, 0, +1, +2EV), merging and tone-mapping was done in dynamic-photo HDR, where I used my variant of the eye-catching tone-mapper (now, that's not a word, is it?). Although I cleaned it up a bit in PS (boy, my sensor is dirty, which is very obvious at f/16) I decided to leave the lens flare untouched as it complements the colors of the little flowers and seems to be pointing right at them.

Lake Monona is feeling the chill and has started turning to ice. Ice has so far only formed in shallow waters close to the shore. We also got more snow! Finally.

I love how the clouds give this photo perspective......

....and the lake was not the only one freezing to ice today:)

I wasn't able to comment much lately, I hope to catch up today.

Sincere thanks to all for your comments and visits.

The Millstream estuary, where fresh water mixes with salt water, has begone to freeze early this year. The last few nights we saw the mercury go as far down as -13C with high winds. So this morning, I was only able to make a few photos before heading back to the safety of my car to avoid freezing my face. Here, on the tip of the sand dunes, the wind is tenaciously wicked, and it carries a mixture of ice, snow and sand particles that whip your face without mercy. Not a place for the meeks. We usually only get this type of weather in January.

Winter has arrived rather ferociously this year.

Iced over branch.
