There's something sublime about growing up in the USA...

...it's why I told Chizuko (*before* we got married in Japan back in the early 90's) that there was one caveat to marrying me: we would move back to the USA at some point to raise our children. Thankfully she acquiesced.

Picture of Travus soaking in the greatness that is the USA over 7 years ago (about 5 months after we had moved here).

This pic was *not* staged; it's just how he felt (thus the title of the pic).

Finally!! Had some decent weather and was able to get some photos of this quilt. With the help of Britt...who saw, photographed and took it home!

Soaring high over Dartmoor

Doing a photo essay and reflection piece with Amy. She told me her heart and mind come together when she is in nature. Unfortunately, I was on a deadline and couldn't wait for the snow to disappear.

So we went to the McNeely Conservatory at the Como Zoo. She had never been there, so her facial expressions and body langues were a "de novo" reaction.to what she saw, and our running dialogue.

We talked about her life in a small town, and her yen to go to the "big city". She graduates this December 2019 and plans to go to grad school in virology.

She said, "I like miniature things."

The audio we recorded I am going to have adjacent to the photo that reflects the moods and her reaction to that point in our conversation.

Below her quote, I am going to do a reflection piece . . . Don't know what that is going to look like, but it is a "WIP" work in process. I'm not even sure that I will use these photos in the essay.

She just did her thing, I followed engaged in dialogue and "shot" when things when there seemed to be a frission . . . connection . So while these may look "posed" . . . they aren't . . . The accompanying text will tie everything together. At least that's the plan.

But for the Flickr folks, I'll be posting various pix from this shoot.

Used a Tamaron 24-70mm, 2.8, AF and image stabilization which gave me a 4-stop advantage since I could not use a tripod or lighting. It's a great lens and the difference between that and the Canon 24-70mm L lens is the Tamaron is substantionally less expensive,

Plus the Tamaron has vibration control, and is tack sharp without a discernible difference between it and the Canon equivalent. It's heavy rascal as you might expect with excellent build quality.

It's is the first day of spring and jhorine and I were itching to get out and shoot some pictures. At lunch we planned, and at 3:15 we left our drab little cubicles and ended up on the campus of Illinois State University. As we walked around, it quickly became apparent that sunshine and happiness was in plentiful supply. We stopped and watched a game of tackle football (the American kind), listened to a couple of budding musicians, and came across this great group of young people celebrating the arrival of spring. At first I just admired their free spirit from afar but my less shy friend jhorine walked right up and started a conversation so I ended up joining them. I snapped this as I moved in, all the while dying to get down on my knees and draw with them. But this is their space now and my day has passed so I simply lifted my camera to my eye and snapped a few, trying not to intrude. I really enjoyed conversing with and watching these young people as they reminded me of the joy that one can feel just for being.

Quilt using Dena Designs sunshine linene for Freespirit

Material Obsession's "strawberry fields" with Mendocino, kona bone, and moda crossweaves, oh, and a little JD Modern Meadow. Handquilted with perle No. 8. Batting is Dream Puff...I wanted something kind of puffy that could be quilted up to 10" apart.

I am SO glad to finally finish something! This is my first finished quilt in over 6 months! It helped that my 3 year old daughter kept asking me to work on it. :) She loves it.

*Thank you to everyone who swapped with me so I could finish this quilt!*

I made this little quilt for baby Tal who entered the world at the end of November - he is the cutest little dude ever! These fabrics were sent to me as part of the Habitat MQG challenge.

The fabrics used are Habitat by Jay McCarroll, and Kona Solids in Charcoal, Coal, and Medium Grey.

You can see I did embrace the crazy. : ) Thanks so much for all your support on that. I think it turned out kind of fun. Crazy, but fun.

Some of the best photo ops were off the main parade route. Just ask and the folks are enthusiastic about having their photo taken, especially when given my card and a promise to e-mail the shot.

So far have heard from just about everybody I asked. This was a lively and fun group who gathered themselves into this photo. Young people of good and free spirits makes one optimistic about the future.

I imagine these two people have a very different point of view on the world around them - both figuratively and literally - although not necessarily how you might think. The fellow in the wheelchair was very much a free spirit - complete with camping gear on his backpack and even a cooking pot hanging on the back.

Taken at Sam Lord's Castle on the south-east coast of Barbados.
