Playing with Picnik :-) Nadia in sepia.

Had just enough of the stripe to make binding and it worked out really cool as it follows the yellow on the front and aqua on the back. More on my blog....http://www.quiltsaladspeak.blogspot.com/

A simple bed to make for Mini Free Spirit. I used a broken picture frame for the bed frame. The feet are wooden spools glued together to get the height I wanted, and the posters are twigs cut from our back yard. I used 1/4" dowel rods for the slats to hold the mattress, but I could have used twigs for that as well.

I crocheted a mattress and pillow from cotton worsted weight yarn, and a coverlet from a block from "200 Crochet Blocks;" I lengthened three sides to fit nicely on the bed.

Swimsuit and beach bag for Free Spirit. The beach bag is an Annie's Attic Barbie pattern. The swimsuit is simple single crochet, worked to fit snuggly around the doll. The first eight rows are not joined, and the back closes with a button.

Virginia loves her Jumper with pockets! These fit over a T-shirt, so it is crocheted to fit a bit looser.

She got the turtle for Christmas :-)

Hat pattern is an Annie's Attic pattern.

Nadia's new hat! She says "I look like Audry Hepburn!"

Hat pattern is from an Annie's Attic series entitled "Annie's Miniature Shoe Society," and features a fancy dress shoe, hat, and bag. The series was published in 2000-2001 and is now out of print. A Google search may find some patterns still available.

Finished American Indian Free Spirit. Now all she needs is a lovely outfit :-)

Virginia in her orange T-shirt and undies, surrounded by Jumper and Overalls. The Jumper and Overalls fit over the T-shirt...the undies keep her modest when she's wearing the Jumper :-)

I made this block for the Portland Modern Quilt Guild's Jay McCarroll Habitat block challenge. All blocks submitted will become a chairity quilt. I was going for an atomic 50's look (at least trying to!)… an era that makes me think of my utopia-like fantasy neighborhoods where neighbors where neighborly, socialized, had BBQ's, kids rode bikes with playing cards snapped to their spokes with clothes-pins, moms wore aprons and made Jello... or maybe I'm just thinking of the Edward Scissorhand's neighborhood.

After making the Free Spirit, I had to try the Pocket Spirit. Doll pattern designed by Beth Webber at www.byhookbyhand.blogspot.com . I used a sport weight silk bamboo blend for the body and a mohair wool blend for the hair(left over from the cloth doll and the free spirit). The dress is made from a size 10 bamboo thread. I love the soft silkiness of this thread. The dress pattern is modified from an edging found in Jan Eaton's book 200 Crochet blocks. I think it was at this point I became addicted to doll making:)

For ElisabethD :-)

Gail Wilson shared this idea for making your own doll stand. A wooden plaque, two 1/4" dowel rods, and minimal skill with a drill is all it takes.

The plaques are available from Michael's or Hobby Lobby for 50 cents to a buck; 1/4" dowel rods are maybe 20 or 30 cents a piece.

If your doll doesn't have removable clothing, use an elastic ponytail holder to secure the doll to the stand (maybe in the same color as your doll's clothing). I use the elastic ponytail holders as the waistband for my dolls underwear or shorts, skirts, and pants.

There isn't anything better than a freshly washed and crinkly quilt! I love how the diagonal plaid quilting transformed this one!
