After a long summer, some of our prettier visitors are looking battered! A Peacock and a Red Admiral share a little nectar!

My impression of the Belgian crisis.

Back in December still a laughing matter but after 170 days, we still don't have a new government. A summary can be found in the article "Belgium Crisis Explained: the kingdom in three parts"

Hubby had a heart-attack. He's fine now, but it reminds me once again.... how fragile we are.

Back soon.

I finally got my computer back where i can use it again after the hard drive suddenly died almost 2 weeks ago.

I have received so many emails from people asking about my home and how things are progressing so here's a quick update:

Unfortunately, my home is still in a state of disrepair with the walls and ceiling opened up (as you saw in my post last week) and everything now sits as-is and on hold due to red tape and process delays with the Association and Insurance companies. I'm not sure when things will be back together (weeks or months) but I'm trying to remain strong and stay positive. Although this is my home, it is also only a building and buildings can be put back together. I know people who are battling life threatening illnesses and I keep reminding myself daily that when I put things into perspective, my troubles are not so bad.

My family and friends have been amazing through this and I am truly blessed to have their love, support and help. Thank you as well my wonderful Flickr friends for all your thoughts and kind words.

I have really been enjoying your beautiful images!! It's great that so many of you are starting a 365 project. It will be fun to follow your work over the next year! :-)

Symphony of simplicity

I spent the summer of 2005 in Jaipur, India.

I was working for an NGO. I visited slums on several occasions, and stumbled upon seas of little, colourful bodies.

They ran about me and my camera, squealing in delight when I asked to take their photos. Wrapped in fanciful, embroidered materials, the girls fashioned dark smudges on their eyelids. Their hands were kept neatly, their shy smiles infectious.

But they wore no shoes.

I beckoned this delicate one from the crowd. Cautiously, she came to me, hands tittering.

And looked into my lens.

"In a fragile environment, we need to be aware of ourselves as members of a uniquely powerful species living among other species who are quite as interesting as we are but vulnerable to us because we are cleverer in more destructive ways."

I had hoped like every mother that none of my children would experience the traumatic loss of a friend. I had attended funerals in my youth... it was painful and unforgettable and something I prayed would escape their childhood.

Nearly two weeks have passed since receiving Victors phone call. I heard his devastated voice and I knew something terrible had happened...

He had just learned his good friend had been shot and had passed away.

The boy was 17 years old, his friend and classmate.

How I wanted to sweep him into my arms. How I wanted to protect him from all the pain he was feeling.

He said “I just needed to call you and tell you I love you.” And he sobbed uncontrollably.

I feel like every thing I said to him was a reach and search to calm him. There wasn’t anything I could say to help.

Death is incredible hard to understand, especially under these circumstances. When my boys were toddlers and would ask “why?” It seemed I had all the answers. But how do I answer this “why?”

I prayed to God to help me find the words to console him. God help my boy through this pain.

During his visit last weekend, he promised to change his course. He promised to get healthy and that he would make me proud.

Death can be the hardest and cruelest lesson in life. Life is so very fragile. Kids rarely think of it. Teens think they’re invincible. Then something like this happens and it punches all the air out of them. To realize the true pain of loss and it’s effect on everyone his life touched. It’s earth shattering.

I rarely ask for prayers from friends. In truth most days I find it hard to pray myself. But I am asking for some prayers for us. For the family of the boy, for my boys, and for Victor.
