Cliffside Lane, The Ridge, Fair Oaks / Sacramento County, California
While the skippers were busy in early October visiting the flowering plants on the south side of the swimming pool in the gated community that I live in, I managed to get a dorsal wing-spread of the Eufala Skipper and the Sachem but I thought that I had over-looked the Fiery Skipper but in looking through my skipper images during the 7-10 day period that the skippers were visiting, I did, in fact, manage to get an image of the dorsal wing-spread of a Fiery Skipper and here it is.

The famous Delicate Arch, in the Arches National Park, Utah, USA.
Quite a walk to reach it, especially in the late afternoon heat, but well worth it!
Zooming in, part of another arch is visible on the horizon, on the left hand side of the picture.

Black-legged Kittiwake

The sound of the waves crashing on the rocks below me filled the air with a sense of power..as my right leg dangled over the edge of the cliff I leaned forward peering down on this small fluff no bigger than the palm of my hand. It sat there unattended some hundred meters above the ocean. One false move and death was sure to follow. It was at this moment that I was reminded how fragile the life of an animal truly is. Many of us walk this planet unconcerned about the footprints we leave on this earth. We let our waste blow along the beach as we soak up the earths rays as if we are kings and queens unconcerned that our waste will likely end up destroying the life’s of our sea creatures. We take strolls or playful runs through the tall grasses along the beaches or coastline often unaware of what lies beneath..possibly a Spotted Sandpiper nest. We cut down our forest to erect a new home or office building destroying the homes of countless numbers of our animals homes..without a care in the world…yet our actions have such impact.
I sat starring at this life in front of me..amazed that they build their nests on sheer cliff edges to try and prevent attacks from prey like ravens or eagles. Nests often so small only one parent can fit with one chick..even then they are barely hanging on. The challenges our wildlife have to face on their own is simple astonishing…yet…many of us walk this planet unconcern about the footprints we leave behind…maybe it’s time we do?
