This series of photographs explores existing structural forms through composition, abstracted from their municipal values and purposes. In order to emphasize this concept I chose to defocus my camera so that most of the finer, higher frequency detail would be lost. This style of capture is arresting, atypical, and to many, incorrect. We are trained from birth to find focus and examine detail, but there is much to gain by looking at the often disregarded less energetic patterns that surround us. This is not a new idea, by any means, and we might find this ideology present in any number of modern works of architecture, sculpture, and even product design. Minimalism often takes this approach and forces simple shapes and smooth textures in order to stress form over material or texture. My structural subjects are not uncommon or inaccessible; they are encountered continually through my life. With these photographs, my intention is to render them emotionally, in reduced form, for reflection and consideration.
I had to write that for school.

Lately I have been reading a lot about Daido Moriyama and some other photographers associated with him, and of course I've looked at many pictures. I have known Moriyama's work for a decade or two, but it seems only now these photos are starting to speak to me. Some things need time.
I find it fascinating how they work, and it’s interesting to read about the degree of awareness they had of what they were doing. They were really up to date theoretically and somehow worked with that. Well, possibly the 60s, 70s and still part of the 80s were a good time for this, when modernism turned to post-modernism and all kinds of stuff.
Maybe it’s anachronistic to mimic a style 60 years old. I mean, we all know that’s long gone for better or worse … but still, I tried.
Doing this has already taught me at least three things that are quite valuable:
1.
I consider myself an "advanced" photographer, after doing it for almost 40 years and basically doing nothing else for 25 years now. But in this field I am an absolute beginner. It’s humbling in a good way to see (and to feel) that I don’t know anything about this.
2.
It’s surprisingly hard to let go of the "conventional" photographic qualities most of us learned the hard way. Now it feels so strange to make blurry, underexposed, tilted photos. You really need to trick yourself to give up control.
3.
This kind of photography seems to be at least as much about "feeling the scene" as "seeing the scene". It’s hard to put in words that are not clichéd, but it’s more seeing with the imagination than with your eyes. It’s another way to approach previsualization, I guess – possibly quite useful for other genres, even if those pictures are not so great.

Vertical jointing in Cathedral Peak Granodiorite forming tabular fracture clusters near Budd Lake.
Preexisting fractures and the formation of an iconic American landscape: Tuolumne Meadows, Yosemite National Park, USA
Richard A. Becker, Basil Tikoff1, Paul R. Riley, Neal R. Iverson
ABSTRACT
Tuolumne Meadows, in Yosemite National Park (USA), is a large sub-alpine meadow in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Immediately adjacent to Tuolumne Meadows—and underlain by the same bedrock lithology (Cathedral Peak Granodiorite)—are vertical rock faces that provide exceptional opportunities to climbers. While the presence of a broad meadow suggests bedrock erodibility, the vertical rock walls indicate bedrock durability. We propose that the Tuolumne Meadows’s landscape is the result of variable glacial erosion due to the presence or absence of pre-existing bedrock fractures. The meadows and valleys formed because of concentrated tabular fracture clusters—a distinctive and locally pervasive type of fracturing—that were particularly susceptible to glacial erosion. In contrast, the vertical rock walls consist of sparsely fractured bedrock that was originally bounded by zones of pervasive tabular fracture clusters. Glacial erosion preferentially removed the highly fractured rock, forming prominent ridges in the upland surrounding Tuolumne Meadows. The orientation and spacing of the tabular fracture clusters, relative to ice flow, has exerted a fundamental control on the geomorphology of the area. The erosional variability exhibited by a single lithology indicates that the degree of fracturing can be more important than the host lithology in controlling landscape evolution.

Jacques Maritain held form to be that principle of perfection of a being which accounts for its essence and qualities. He also termed it “the ontological secret that [things] bear within them . . . their operating mystery. . . above all the proper principle of intelligibility, the proper clarity of every thing . . . a vestige or a ray of the creative intelligence at the heart of created being”. 3 Form is the reason we can know and understand reality, and thus it is a source of light in things, the light by which we grasp and appreciate them. Form, therefore, manifests the inner radiance of things, their particular reflections of the divine fullness.

Mandarin Duck. I think this is a new arrival in two senses; the first I've seen at Stover but I suspect it may be a juvenile. The colours don't seem complete on the head and breast. Let me know if you agree or not.

Our principal violinists, cellist and harpsichordist were at Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College, Darlington, on Wednesday 20th September 2017 for a workshop on performance and interpretation. We greatly enjoyed working with the orchestra and soloists on three concertos – Bach’s Violin Concerto in A minor BWV 1041, Vivaldi’s Flute Concerto in D major ‘The Goldfinch’ RV428 and John Garth’s Cello Concerto No 2 in B flat major. It was an intensive workshop focusing on period interpretation, style and performance practices, and at the end of the workshop the orchestra presented a concert to an invited audience of students from other schools in the area. We were delighted to be involved in this workshop to engage and explore this wonderful music with enthusiastic young players.
We’re grateful to Dr Simon Fleming (Curriculum Leader for Music) and the staff at QESFC for inviting us to lead this workshop. QESFC has a thriving culture of music education and participation, and we’re delighted to have been involved in supporting their music learning.
