A group of Canadian Geese returning to the lake. The formation of the flying birds, and the evening sun shine on the birds' body formed a nice pattern and dimension.

Toronto Air Show 2016

We're now into the 4th year of the Woking Peregrine Project. Another hugely successful year, with all 5 chicks surviving to fledging. They've been flying for little over a week now and are already putting on some pretty impressive aerial displays.

This is a very impressive tall and thin sandstone formation in the middle of Kodachrome Basin. There are no other rocks around this one. It is amazing that this very tall and thin formation was stronger than all the rocks that weathered into sand around it. It is called the Chimney because of how it resembles a tall chimney.

Rock formation in Kodachrome. The park got its name from an expedition by National Geographic Society back in the late 1940s. The Nat Geo team photographed the park using Kodachrome film which was only made available commercially a year or two earlier. One could also argue that the park is named such because it's so colorful.

Canada Goose (Branta Canadensis)

Emigrant Lake – Jackson County – Oregon - USA

“The big, black-necked Canada Goose with its signature white chinstrap mark is a familiar and widespread bird of fields and parks. Thousands of “honkers” migrate north and south each year, filling the sky with long V-formations. But as lawns have proliferated, more and more of these grassland-adapted birds are staying put in urban and suburban areas year-round, where some people regard them as pests….. Canada Geese feed by dabbling in the water or grazing in fields and large lawns. They are often seen in flight moving in pairs or flocks; flocks often assume a V formation….. In a pattern biologists call “assortative mating,” birds of both sexes tend to choose mates of a similar size.”

Here’s a single-frame, long-exposure taken with my broken D300… from the veranda of my cottage in the Little Karoo!

Yes… I actually took this photo after my tripod fell over with my camera still attached. Fortunately my camera dropped onto its back (not onto the lens)… so while all the buttons and dials on the rear of the camera stopped working… thankfully I was still able to change the aperture and shutter speed… and I was still able to focus the lens and press the shutter.

I was extremely relieved that I was still able to take photos with my beloved D300… else I wouldn’t have been able to capture this amazing cloud formation!!
