The last of our September, 2010 Southwest vacation pictures. These were taken in a place called Bisti Wilderness Area near Farmington, New Mexico.
It is a desolate landscape of wierd rock fomations and dry washes. There are many opportunities to see images that look like things in our common lives -- if only coincidentally... It is a place that one can visit over and over again, and not see the same things in the same way.
I originally took this photo due to the dramatic contrast between the dark cumulus clouds in the foreground and the white towering cumulus in the background. The towering cumulus went on to become a cumulonimbus (see photos 2 and 3).
The photo was taken in West Wales on 5th January 2008.
The smoke trails left by the team are made by releasing diesel into the exhaust which oxidises straight away, leaving a white smoke trail. Dyes can be added to produce the red and blue colour. The diesel is stored in the pod on the underside of the plane. The smoke system uses ten gallons per minute; therefore each plane can trail smoke for a total of seven minutes. This consists of 5 minutes of white smoke, 1 minute of blue and 1 minute of red.

More fun times with frogs in the pond today. The pond was packed with spawn, so much so it looked more like the frogs were having a jelly wrestling contest half of the time.

I love the formation of Cabezo de Castildetierra. In particular the top of the formation which, to me, looks like a head with a resigned face looking out across the nature park.
Winter kicked in quickly last week. It surprised Flora and Fauna after a relative mild autumn. My strawberry plants are still carrying green snow-covered strawberries and my Chinese Hibiscus was flowering just today.
These geese are just a few of the hundreds of geese suddenly leaving the Netherlands for a place a bit warmer.
Late afternoon. As quickly as it appeared it also vanished. I have used a bit of extra contrast effec to make it more dramatic.
Bird's eye view of rock formations in the northern section of Canyonlands National Park, Utah. In this case, the bird is a balloon. As a sidenote, our pilot pointed to this formation as we were miles away and set it as our target -- splitting the goalposts. He nailed it. This was taken as we passed over.
I was able to get two rock formations in this photo of the Grand Canyon.

A short spur trail leads up the slope along the base of the steeply dipping Morrison Formation rock layer. A few large dinosaur bones and many bone fragments are embedded in the rock face. These dinosaurs lived approximately 150 million years ago.

This is an exposure of the Lower Cambrian Sellick Hill Formation in coastal South Australia. The section consists of a basal sandstone, actually a heterolithic facies with bioturbation. Above that is a gentle carbonate ramp succession with ribbon-nodular limestones. Some slumps, discordances, and flat-pebble conglomerates are present.
Fossils here include burrows and hyoliths. Elsewhere, the unit has archaeocyathans.

Locality: wave-cut exposure near a point/promontory on the western side of Myponga Bay, Fleurieu Peninsula, South Australia (vicinity of 35° 22.265’ South latitude, 138° 22.906’ East longitude)
This unusual rock formation is one of Murphy's haystacks.
They obtained their name because a traveller in a coach saw the formation in the distance. He asked how a farmer could produce so much hay. As the farm was on a property owned by a man called Murphy, the rocks became known as Murphys Haystacks.
