Pastoral musicians, catechists, school teachers, parish catechetical leaders, coordinators, youth ministry leaders, pastoral associates, principals, RCIA teams, prison and jail ministry volunteers and adult faith formation teams, deacons, priests and religious sisters, and many others wanting to spend the day growing, learning and sharing in faith registered by the hundreds for this year's Parish Ministry & Catechetical Conference! The theme was "Hope...Anchor of the Soul" (Hebrews 6:18-10). The annual conference was held Saturday, Sept. 30 at West Catholic High School in Grand Rapids and featured keynote presenter Dr. John Wood, midday Mass with Bishop David Walkowiak, over 70 workshops, and two day-long institutes. The conference is sponsored by the diocesan Office of Pastoral Services.

The 65th birthday of the de Havilland DHC-1 Chipmunk was celebrated in style at Panshanger Aerodrome on 22nd May 2011. Despite very high winds and thundery showers, 18 aeroplanes managed to attend.
When you hear the phrase, "I bet that ???? could tell a story" - just imagine all the different stories hidden in these many layers built up over millions of years. Humbling.
Some shots from an amazing weekend over in Ireland with my good friend Leigh. One of the best weekends I can remember...and I'll hopefully be heading back for more sometime. It's such a beautiful place.
Diamictite in the Precambrian of Virginia, USA.
The Snowball Earth Glaciations during the Neoproterozoic were the most significant ice ages that Earth ever experienced - two or three of them occurred in succession. The most extreme models describing Snowball Earth have glacial ice completely covering all continents and all oceans, even at the equator. Some models, called “Slushball Earth”, have Earth’s equatorial oceanic areas not completely frozen over. Each Snowball Earth Glaciation was followed by a super-greenhouse climate. The resulting sedimentary record of these “freeze-fry” events typically consists of glacial tillites and overlying cap carbonates. These units are preserved at many localities on Earth.
The Virginia outcrop shown above consists of a Snowball Earth glacial conglomerate (polylithic diamictite), with non-bedded matrix-supported clasts. This was originally a glacial till. With burial and lithification, till becomes tillite. The rocks in this area have been subjected to very low grade metamorphism, so the tillite is now a metatillite. The clasts vary in lithology, origin, and age. The most conspicuous clasts are speckled granites (dominated by quartz and potassium feldspar), derived from the 1.0 to 1.3 billion year old Cranberry Gneiss.
