In Bermuda, Homer often focused on sites of natural splendor, including the island’s characteristic coral formations, as well as their geopolitical context. For much of the nineteenth century, Bermuda was the site of the British Navy’s headquarters in North America and the West Indies, and Homer’s watercolors often gesture to this military presence across the archipelago. Here, two red-coated soldiers, visible atop the coral formation at left, point across the water toward the Royal Dockyards on the distant horizon at right. Their brilliant jackets form a striking note against the vibrant azure water.

The northern shoveler (/ˈʃʌvələr/; Anas clypeata), or northern shoveller in British English, sometimes known simply as the shoveller, is a common and widespread duck. It breeds in northern areas of Europe and Asia and across most of North America,[2] wintering in southern Europe, Africa, the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, and Central, and northern South America. It is a rare vagrant to Australia. In North America, it breeds along the southern edge of Hudson Bay and west of this body of water, and as far south as the Great Lakes west to Colorado, Nevada, and Oregon.[3][4]
The Northern shoveler is one of the species to which the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA) applies.[5] The conservation status of this bird is Least Concern

'Five spires rise out of an octagonal base shape between which are suspended six roughly life-size female figures joined and angled as if flying in close formation. The sculpture is surrounded by eight small black posts.
The spires were inspired by a War War 2 poster remembered from childhood showing 'a formation of planes caught in the criss cross of search lights.' The female figures represent the women pilots who flew fighter planes during the war from factories to the aerodrome at Ravenswood. As well as commemorating the past the sculpture also symbolizes community spirit.'
