Pyrite crystals in magnetite-quartz banded iron formation in the Precambrian of Ontario, Canada.
Whitish = quartz-rich
Dark gray = magnetite-rich
Brassy-gold = pyrite (FeS2)
The outcrop shown here consists of BIFs - banded iron formations. BIFs are unusual, dense sedimentary rocks consisting of alternating layers of iron-rich oxides and iron-rich silicates. Most BIFs are Proterozoic in age (although some are Late Archean), and do not form today - they're “extinct”! Many specific varieties of iron formation are known, and some are given special rock names. For example, jaspilite is an attractive reddish & silvery gray banded rock consisting of hematite, red chert (“jasper”), and specular hematite or magnetite. This outcrop has magnetite-quartz BIF.
Because of their age, most BIFs have been around long enough to have been subjected to one or more orogenic (mountain-building) events. As such, most BIFs are folded, faulted, and/or metamorphosed to varying degrees.
BIFs are known from around the world, but some of the most famous & extensive BIF deposits are found in the vicinity of North America’s Lake Superior Basin. Many BIFs have economic concentrations of iron and are mined - they are the most important variety of iron ore on Earth.
The rocks at this locality are structurally tilted. Small-scale folds and faults are present in the area. Published literature refers to the folding here as soft-sediment deformation.
The brassy gold-colored crystals are pyrite ("fool's gold), which is iron sulfide, FeS2.

2 different species of fish from the Green River Formation in Wyoming, which dates from the Eocene, about 50 million years ago. The one on the right is Knightia, one of the most common fossil fish in the world, and the one on the left is a Diplomystus dentatus. The whole piece measures about 11 inches across, while the fish are around 4 inches across. The Green River Formation is one of the most famous fossil collecting sites in the whole world, as it preserves its fossils extraordinarily well. There was at one point 4 large lakes in that area and these fossils allow us to see what life was like in the early Tertiary period in the American west.
Tyrannosaurus rex Osborn, 1905 - theropod dinosaur skull (left lateral view) from the Cretaceous of South Dakota, USA (replica of skull of "Sue" specimen, public display, FMNH PR 2081, Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago, Illinois, USA).
Theropods were small to large, bipedal dinosaurs. Almost all known members of the group were carnivorous (predators and/or scavengers). They represent the ancestral group to the birds, and some theropods are known to have had feathers. Some of the most well known dinosaurs to the general public are theropods, such as Tyrannosaurus, Allosaurus, and Spinosaurus.
Tyrannosaurus rex is the most famous theropod dinosaur. It was a large bipedal predator in western North America 65 to 68 million years ago, during the latest Cretaceous (Maastrichtian Stage). The most famous specimen is FMNH PR 2081, nicknamed “Sue”, housed at Chicago’s Field Museum of Natural History. The specimen was stolen from its discoverers by the American government (greed always brings out the worst in everyone) and was eventually auctioned for $8,362,500. It was bought by McDonald’s and Disney on behalf of Chicago’s Field Museum, where the actual skeleton is on permanent display. In addition to the skeleton, two complete replicas exist: one owned by McDonald’s and one owned by Disney.
FMNH PR 2081 is 42 feet long (from snout to tail tip) and stands 13 feet high (base of feet to top of hip). The skeleton is about 90% complete, lacking several neck bones, some portions of the thoracic vertebrae, portions of the distal-most tail vertebral elements, most of the left arm, and all of the left foot. This individual was an old adult of 28 years. Several deformities are present on the skeleton, representing bone lesions or healed breaks.

Santa Susana Pass and its rock formations is noticed by all who drive the busy 118 Fwy joining Ventura County's Simi Valley and L.A.'s San Fernando Valley. But the Pass has served as a rugged corridor since 1769. By 1859 it became a stagecoach road. At "Devil's Slide," the steep drop into the Valley, brakes were strengthened with chain, passengers walked, and the horses were blindfolded.
The Pass has been the backdrop of many movies, primarily Westerns, from the 20's to the 50's. Near the top of "Devil's Slide," in the late 60's, is where the Manson family stayed.

My wife opened the kitchen door this evening and I spotted a cloud formation. Decided to go outside for a few pictures. I also noticed the sun was bright orange and fading behind the trees so I snapped a few pictures of that as well.
Blue Canyon is really a fantastic place. It is composed of sandstone, carved and eroded by thousands of years of water and wind.
The feature of the sandstone that makes this site so special is the degree of contrast between the chocolate brown and white layers. The brown layers are quite smooth, while the white layers seem to be almost corrugated.
We (Walter, John, and I) planned this trip when we heard that a flicker friend of ours from Italy (Federica) and her nephew (Francesco) were going to visit the Southwest and wanted to see Blue Canyon. Well, it was a no-brainer, and we decided we would all meet in a nearby town and visit this location together.
Since my brother John had visited it on a previous occasion, we knew how to get there, but we had a number of problems -- the worst one being a flooded wash just before the actual location. The water was a couple of feet deep, thirty or forty feet wide, and quite swift, preventing our crossing the wash. We ended up having to drive another couple of hours to come to the site from the other side. Turns out, it was well worth it for all concerned...

Gulls fly in formation during morning exercises, reflecting in a pond in the otherwise dry Owens Lake along the southern Sierra Nevada range. The Alabama Hills and the high peaks near Mt Whitney are visible in the distance. View large on black.
Unlike the fighter jets from Edwards AFB that occasionally roar down the Owens Valley, these flyers are virtually silent.
