Original caption: A new image from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope, taken in infrared light, shows where the action is taking place in galaxy NGC 1291. The outer ring, colored red in this view, is filled with new stars that are igniting and heating up dust that glows with infrared light. The stars in the central area produce shorter-wavelength infrared light than that seen in the ring, and are colored blue. This central area is where older stars live, having long ago gobbled up the available gas supply, or fuel, for making new stars.

 

The galaxy is about 12 billion years old and is located 33 million light years away in the Eridanus constellation. It is known as a barred galaxy because a central bar of stars (which looks like a blue "S" in this view) dominates its center.

 

When galaxies are young and gas-rich, stellar bars drive gas toward the center, feeding star formation. Over time, as the star-making fuel runs out, the central regions become quiescent and star-formation activity shifts to the outskirts of a galaxy. There, spiral density waves and resonances induced by the central bar help convert gas to stars. The outer ring, seen here in red, is one such resonance location, where gas has been trapped and ignited into a star-forming frenzy.

 

Infrared light at wavelengths of 3.4 and 4.5 microns are rendered in blue and green, showing the distribution of stars, while dust features that glow brightly at 8.0 microns are shown in red.

My wife opened the kitchen door this evening and I spotted a cloud formation. Decided to go outside for a few pictures. I also noticed the sun was bright orange and fading behind the trees so I snapped a few pictures of that as well.

This massive formation to the right of Phillae's landing spot is very strange. At the top of the formation is huge bulge of material suspended unbelievably above a huge vertical drop. It llooks like toothpaste being squeezed out of the tube. Below and to the right is another and further round a third. These look remarkably like lava flows on volcanos on Earth, not the runny bright orange molten ones, but the semi-solid very slow moving ones, where the lava is all crumbly and brittle.

 

From the dark and more "rock" like appearance, it suggests that most of the volatile ices escaped when the material was semi-molten. The material below appears far brighter, suggesting a higher ice content and that it is the surface the semi-molten material flowed onto.

 

Is Hatmehit in fact a large Caldera or a large impact site where the heat of the impact melted the comet material and thrust up this more refractory crater rim, that resists erosion more because of its low volatiles content? The molten material within the crater would form a flat level surface, however in the time it took to cool and become solid, the comets rotation would tend to slosh it to one side of the crater, creating a series of ripples or steps. There are two distinct levels within the basin with the ridge defining them perpendicular to the direction of the comet's rotation.

 

This effect can also be seen in the Imhotep depression, one of the steps being marked by the scarp that runs across the flat basin floor. Cheops and the two other large boulders may be bits of the impactor that survived and floated to the surface. Just another one of my wild theories. :-)

Tomorrow I will be leaving to spend a week in southern Utah for a photo workshop and white water rafting trip. I'll be staying near Arches National Park for 2 days and hope to get some shots at sunrise before the tourists arrive there. I had been there before, but had bronchitis at the time.

 

The white water rafting trip will begin in Canyonlands NP on the Colorado River. We will travel 100 miles through Cataract Canyon and finish in Glen Canyon/Lake Powell. No electric, phones, computers, internet, etc. for 5 days. River baths. Sleeping under the stars in the middle of nowhere. Hikes for scenic desert views and Native American rock art and remnants. And LOTS AND LOTS of photography. And Utah has been getting lots and lots of rain. Yeah those class 4 rapids are probably class 5 now. It's going to be one wild ride!

 

I am so excited that I haven't been able to sleep! Expect some photos when I have access to the Internet!

I didn't know there were any arch formations in this area! We ere camping at Indian Rock on Pyramid Lake, and as we were exploring the rocks, we found this nice tufa arch formation! This is the only arch formation in this area that I know of! I took this picture, just a few minutes before the sun set, so the lighting was perfect!

Also, I have a bridge I'd like to sell.

I was eating at Chamorro Village and saw this fantastic scene. The right side is inverted but mannn, that looks good! When I shot it I knew it would make a great something if I inverted the other side.

Lately I've been uploading a lot of sunsets from the same beach. Reason is that I've been spending my daily evenings having fun and relaxing on the same beach with a group of friends I met recently. I always carry my Canon G12 with me but on this particular evening I decided to get my Canon 5D MKII and grab some shots with it, and what an evening it was :-)

 

From an old diary of mine. It consists completely of drawings (ink on paper).

All those sketches have been made spontaneously without much thinking. As it turned out they tended to arrange themselves in cycles. There is a series of Hommages à Gustav Mahler; one set is called "anode / cathode", another one is named "gestures", and there are "alluvial", "cathedral", "sound", current", "traces", and we have quite a number of "stations". And then there are some "formations" (of birds, of stones, of people, of celestial bodies, of fish - that's up to you).

Found at Mammoth Hot Springs, Yellowstone NP. The tavertine formations in the area create these stark terraces over which the boiling, mineral-rich liquid flows, heated by magma deep in the earth. It is truly a surreal, strange place to visit.

The unit was deployed to Afghanistan in May 2009, where they spent a year at a base near the eastern border of Afghanistan. In early June, elements of the Company crossed the vast mountain ranges to begin their mission. The Unit’s primary mission during the deployment was to train the Afghan National Forces.

 

The Unit returned in Spring of 2010. Two soldiers were killed during the mission, 1st Sgt. John Blair and SSG Alex French, IV.

 

1st SGT. John Blair, age 38, was the gunner on the lead MRAP–a new armored vehicle designed to be resistant to mines–in a convoy of several vehicles. Not long after leaving camp, the group came under attack. An hour-and-a-half long firefight ensued. A rocker-propelled grenade tore through the turret of the vehicle where John was a gunner. 1SG Blair is credited with saving the life of his Staff Sergeant while under attack.

 

SSG Alex French, age 31, was killed after enemy forces attacked his unit using an improvised-explosive device. (IED).

Here, I'm using a Voronoi diagram to examine the spacing between players for the New York Red Bulls and Columbus Crew. Each player's position is marked with a dot, which forms the center of a region that is closest to that player. In this way, the Voronoi diagram is one way of determining how much of the field is controlled by each player, and thus each team.

 

For the purposes of this analysis, the goalkeepers have been left out.

 

I'm pondering whether this type of work could be automated, or applied to video footage to take into account the direction and velocity of each player.
