... i have never seen so many cranes like yesterday in formation flight and many of you must have seen them... and i never have seen so many cormorants in formation too... :=))
This is another photo from my walk the other day along the McKenzie River where the Canadian Geese were floating through the lovely reflections.
We were driving on this country road when suddenly around a bend in the road we see this rock formation.
Sunlight illuminates a group of standing rocks in Monument Basin (aka Standing Rocks Basin) in Canyonlands National Park. The multilayered red rock of the pillars consists of Organ Rock Shale, formed by deposits from streams and tidal flats 250 million years ago. The white caprock is White Rim Sandstone, derived from sand dunes. Once the harder caprock is lost the pillars erode into shorter needles, as seen on the formation to the right of the pillars.

I know very little about geology but have read online that these are Silesian, mostly from the Bude Formation and date back to the Carboniferous period, more than 300 million years old. They were formed in a giant tropical lake (Bude Lake) that folded when Britain and France collided.

Reynisdrangar is a series of basalt columns off the south coast of Iceland. They can best be seen from Reynisfjara beach, one of the most famous black sand beaches in the country. At their tallest, these stacks are 66 meters high. They did not sprout from the ocean independently but were once part of the main island. Through long periods of weathering, they disconnected and appear to be separate now.
There is a mythical story about how these stacks were formed; the story concerns two trolls and a three-masted ship. It is said that the trolls tried to drag the ship to shore at night. They were not quick enough, and when the sun rose at dawn it turned them to stone. A second story says that two trolls murdered a woman, and her husband took revenge. He tricked them into coming out at night and ensured they remained outside long enough to turn to stone.

All eight of the cygnets on the Bishop's Palace Moat came racing towards me this morning doing practice takeoffs. They need a bit more practice at the formation flying though!

This is a snapshot of a supercomputer simulation of cosmological structure formation. The simulation contains a region of space 40 million light-years on a side at 2 billion years after the Big Bang. Each step in brightness represents a factor of 10 change in density, with the brightest regions being the location of galaxy clusters. The simulation closely matches observational data, for which it is more difficult to take a visually appealing image.
