In my backyard one day, late morning into the afternoon I looked up and saw these beautiful clouds in the sky with the sun shining through. I thought WOW, this is gorgeous and started shooting. These are the images I was fortunate to obtain! Photo images credited to Vickie L Klinkhammer of Vickielynne Photography and Designs (VLP&Designs). As a playable chess piece, Jack Sparrow is a White Rook.

You can sort of see that the bottle that Jack is holding is cast with 2 different types of plastic. The bottle neck is translucent and the bottom of the bottle (where the rum would be) is opaque.

So how did the yardangs at Coyote Mojave Dry Lake get there.

Yardangs are erosional features. They formed AFTER something got deposited, then partially eroded away.

The story begins with blowing dune sands becoming deposited in the northern part of the Coyote Dry Lake basin. There were probably sand dunes marching across this section of the basin, much like the dunes at Nipomo on the Lompoc Peninsula or the barchans near the Salton Sea. The dunes paved across the landscape, with each dune leaving a layer of sand behind as it marched across. Eventually, vegetation colonizes the dune. (Dunes sands are great at holding water, so if a plant can get roots down into it, it's a great environment.) The vegetation stabilizes the dune from futher movement.

As the dune sits there, water percolates through from rain. Tiny grains of salts that were blown in as part of the dune materials dissolve, and eventually reprecipitate deeper in the dune. The salts help bridge the dune sand grains and make the sands more cohesive. If the vegetation dies off (fire, prolonged drought, etc.), the dune sands are no longer stabilized and blow away revealing the hardened core. The dune sand core still shows the layers of sand grains that were deposited long ago. The hardened grains are more resistant to erosion than loose sands and can hold a steep slope like small cliffs. Blowing and bouncing sand grains chip away at the front of the remnant core, undercutting it from the base and making small blocks fall from the cliff. The windward front of the core becomes blunted from erosion and undercutting, and the characteristic shape of the yardang is created.

If this erosion continues, eventually the scouring and erosion will remove the remnant. However, if vegetation is able to recolonize the yardang (from sand trapped in pockets), then it can trap additional sand and the sand can protect the yardang from furhter erosion. A sand covered hump results, with hardened core poking out from more sand free areas. If the vegetation is removed, the protective sand cover will once again be removed, and erosion will start resume.

Eventually, the hardened core will be removed and the released sands will be blown downwind as part of the sediment cycle of the Mojave.

"For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile." (Romans 1:16)

Salvation is analogous to a seat belt.

Sometimes one just needs to have a little luck and be in the right place at the right time.

Today for example, I worked a little longer to fill in for a colleague. As I was packing up, BULL01 formation came on the radio. They were in the South and were flying North.

A few minutes later, they requested to overfly the airport at 1000ft on their way to the city of Groningen. I quickly grabbed my lens, went outside and there they were!

It was an incredibly nice sight and this compilation shows them as they are about to/in the turn for the city.

before we left palmer mass. yesterday, we stopped at this amazing glacier rock formation in the woods. you could climb up it (which i had to take my shoes off for, too slippery!) and stand on the very top. it was beautiful. and for some reason my camera was taking photo in blue. dont know why, checked everything. and today its back to normal. i think a spirit traveld along with me

Although this may look like a composite of two shots, it is not. This adult and juvenile duo of American Bald Eagles were flying close together but on slightly different trajectories and altitudes. This is the second of two images that I took of this pair. In the first, the two looked like they were touching wings, but the adult was actually above and further behind and slightly out of focus. In this shot, amazingly the adult is in fairly good focus. Captured on the Mississippi River near Davenport, Iowa on February 10, 2014.
