Crosslit by Vivitar 285HV and Bower SFD728C. The Bower was camera right and behind the chess set. The Vivitar was camera left. Both flashes were at the same height as the chess board so the pieces would be lit while the board stayed dark.
The other side of Magasang Rock Formation, facing the setting sun. A cast of golden lights to the textures of the rocks and swirling pool of ocean waters.
These rock formations just added such interest to this area!! I don't remember them being here, but it was so long ago that I don't really remember. Flathead River runs along the trees out there...I just love it out here!! Have a nice evening all!! The weather is super windy...makes it miserable to do anything outside!! :)

"Look for swarms of more or less parallel white quartz veins. These generally crosscut the shear fractures at various angles. Quartz veins like these grow in fractures that develop as rocks are pulled apart. Since the veins cut the shear fractures, they indicate that after the rocks were compressed and sheared, the crust was ‘extended’ to the NW-SE (using current directions; it isn’t known what directions the actual extension occurred) while these rocks were still far below the surface. There is considerable debate among structural geologists who struggle to interpret the complex tectonic history preserved in San Juan rock units, and I won’t go into it all here. You’ll probably enjoy the scenery far more than that long and certainly confusing discussion! See the reference below for an overview of the subject."

Cressler mapped the geologic unit along Silver Creek in the vicinity of Silver Creek Cave as Cambrian age Conasauga Formation. All the published descriptions for the Conasauga Formation do not include massive chert so I was confused. I called my father and discussed the problem. He said massive chert is very rare in the Conasauga Formation in the southern Valley and Ridge Providence of Georgia. This was confirmed by geologist Tom Crawford, personal communication.

The Soudan Iron-Formation is a Neoarchean-aged banded iron formation (BIF) unit in the Vermilion Greenstone Belt of northeastern Minnesota, USA. Stratigraphically, the Soudan is considered to be the middle member of the Ely Greenstone. Metamorphosed pillow basalt successions occur above and below the iron-rich interval:
- upper member of the Ely Greenstone
- Soudan Iron-Formation member
- lower member of the Ely Greenstone
Radiometric dating of Ely Greenstone rocks (see Jahn & Murthy, 1975 and Jirsa et al., 2010) indicates that the Soudan Iron-Formation is about 2.722 billion years old.
The Soudan Iron-Formation was deposited in a deep-water environment and is closely associated with several types of volcanic rocks formed in an ancient island arc setting. As such, the unit is classified as an Algoma-type iron-formation. Superior-type iron-formations were deposited in relatively shallow water, continental shelf settings.
The Soudan Iron-Formation is exposed in & around the town of Soudan, Minnesota at roadcuts, glacially-eroded outcrop knobs, surface mines, and underground mines.
Observed iron-rich lithologies in the Soudan Iron-Formation include specularite, jaspilite BIF, and magnetite BIF.
The outcrop shown above is magnetite BIF, characterized by alternating layers of blackish magnetite (Fe3O4) and silvery-gray specular hematite (Fe2O3).

Taken on a snowy hike to the lower Mohawk Lake via Spruce Creek in Summit County, Colorado. The snow was too deep for me to continue to the upper Mohawk Lake -- save it for the summer.
