Yanıkyöre volcanic rock formations
The district is renowned for the cone-shaped volcanic rock formations, numbering at about eighty, in the nearby Yanıkyöre (literally the burnt land) area, also sometimes still referred to, including in Turkey, under the Greek name of Katakekaumene, which has the same meaning. Increasingly brought to the attention of a wider public in recent years as a natural curiosity, other recently coined terms to describe the area include "Cappadocia of the Aegean Region, Turkey" or even "Kuladocia". Kula Volcanic Geopark was accepted and certificated by UNESCO on 6 September 2013 at 37th UNESCO general conference in Naples. So that Kula Volcanic Geopark joined UNESCO Global Geopark Network. Also this patent became the first geopark of Turkey, 58th geopark in Europe, and 96th geopark in the world. The fairy chimneys in Kula, dating back 2 million years, were formed from volcanic ash. These beauties are still standing in Kula, although some of them are being destroyed by nature, said Professor Asaf Koçman of Ege University. The Kula Volcanics has been a major attraction since the antiquity times. The great ancient Greek Geographer Strabo (63BC-24AD) after his journey to Italy he saw these lavas and compared those active volcanoes with Kula, he concluded that Kula volcanic area is just like once up on a time the areas of volcanoes in Italy. So Kula seems to be the first place where “extinct volcano” is implemented in the world. Strabo in his majestic book “Geographica” named Kula as “Katakekaumene” (fire-born) because of the coal black lava.
A very special formation left RAF Odiham bound for the south coast of England but tactical camouflage was not on the agenda! In the past 18 months three Chinook aircraft have been painted to celebrate the 100th anniversaries of 18(B) and 27 Squadron from RAF Odiham and 28 Squadron from RAF Benson.
With the first of the helicopters expected to be returned to standard operational markings in the near future this opportunity was integrated in to a formation training sortie which tested the crews ability to plan and execute some very unique tasks. With it being so complex the mission was, unusually, briefed the day prior to launch and each crew walked through the various manoeuvres in the hangar, in what is colloquially known as a 'rock drill'. At the hour they walked for their aircraft each member had a firm grasp of the planned movements which enabled them to focus on maintaining strict safety margins.
The day itself was only the end of a long road though, with preparation having begun over 6 months ago. Operational restraints cancelled the first planned date and the only other window where all three aircraft were available concurrently was identified as being this week.
RAF Odiham's dedicated and professional engineering teams were therefore faced with generating three very specific airframes to complete this sortie whilst concurrently deploying multiple others to support exercises in Sweden and onboard HMS Ocean and providing manpower to flying detachments in the United States and elsewhere. They succeeded and the results of their efforts are clearly seen.The Serco team who painted the Chinook's at Odiham, each in the space of two intense weeks, were invited to see the three lined up on the dispersal together for what may be the first and only time a moment they had waited a long time to see.
As for the stunning imagery seen here, that could certainly not have been captured without the generous contribution of 657 Sqn Army Air Corps, also based at RAF Odiham, who integrated a Lynx aircraft with the formation to act as a camera platform. This again provided a valuable training opportunity for dissimilar types to operate together, all the while having to maintain awareness of the other's capabilities and limitations.

Southeastern Canada's ~2.3 billion year old Lorrain Formation includes some beautiful rocks that rockhounds have nicknamed "puddingstone". This refers to whitish-gray quartzites having common pebbles of red jasper.
The Lorrain Formation is somewhat heterolithic. Published studies mention that the unit has arkoses, subarkoses, quartzites, and jasper-pebble conglomerates. The latter two lithologies are present at the glacially-eroded outcrop seen here. The quartzites were originally sandstones. They have been well cemented and somewhat metamorphosed into very hard rocks. The jasper-pebble conglomerates, or "puddingstones", include clasts of white quartz and reddish jaspilites. Pebble shapes range from rounded to angular. Ordinarily, a sedimentary rock having rounded pebbles is called "conglomerate", and a rock having angular pebbles is called "breccia". This material has both shape categories, but is referred to as "conglomerate" here.
Jaspilite is a type of BIF (banded iron formation). BIFs only formed on Earth during the Precambrian - most are Paleoproterozoic in age. They are the # 1 source of iron ore for the world's steel industry. Numerous specific types of BIFs are known. Jaspilite consists of alternating laters of red and silvery-gray, iron-rich minerals. The red layers are hematite or jasper (= hematitic chert). The silver-gray layers are usually rich in magnetite and/or specular hematite. Jaspilite BIFs outcrop in many areas around Lake Superior, for example in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Minnesota, and Ontario.
During the Paleoproterozoic, BIFs were subaerially exposed as paleo-outcrops and eroded, producing BIF sediments, including many red jasper pebbles. These mixed with quartz-rich sediments.
Regional studies indicate that the Lorrain Formation was deposited in ancient shallow ocean, lake, delta, and shoreline environments.

Fountain Formation. This unit of Pennsylvanian age is exposed along the eastern flank of the Front Range of the Colorado Rockies. it is composed of debris washed off the eastern isde of the Ancestral Rockies and deposited unconformably by torrential streams upon early Proterozoic metasediments about 300 million years ago. The Fountain Formation is an arkose, a sandstone and conglomerate with a high percentage of feldspar. The eastern-dipping Fountain Formation marks the western edge of the Denver Basin. The unit is exposed spectacularly at the Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs and in the famous, steeply dipping flatirons at Boulder, Colo., The Fountain Formation has a counterpart of the same age and composition on the western flank of the Front Range, The Red Cliff Formation was similarly formed by sediment eroded off the western side of the Ancestral Rockies. CAMP ZAMA, Japan — Hundreds of American and Japanese service members, civilians and their families gathered under the partly sunny sky over Camp Zama to celebrate the conclusion of Army Birthday Week with a culmination of sports, competitions and ceremonies conducted June 17, 2016.
The fifth and final day of outdoor activities opened with a command-wide fun run hosted by Army Maj. Gen. James F. Pasquarette, commanding general, U.S. Army Japan (USARJ). Pasquarette’s open invitation permitted the men and women in uniform to bring their friends and loved ones. The result produced an amusing mixture of organized ranks and files of service members running in cadence with a colorful cast of spouses, children, baby strollers and small dogs trotting along the flanks.
Regardless their age, size, speed, creed or breed, every participant ended the two-mile route soaked from head to toe compliments of the Camp Zama Directorate of Emergency Services’ firetruck salute.
Later that morning, the community gathered at the Camp Zama High School stadium to join or cheer their respective units in the Camp Zama Army Birthday Week Championship finals. Hundreds of spectators set their eyes on the track to watch some of the post’s fastest sprinters attempt to break their personal best in the 100-meter dash. The attendees’ gaze then shifted to the field to witness a friendly soccer match between Camp Zama’s U.S. Soccer Team and the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force’s Central Readiness Force (CRF). The 30-minute see-saw battle ended with a 3-2 penalty shootout that clenched victory for the red, white and blue.
Between the match the U.S. Army and CRF’s strongest troops squared off in a best-of-three tug-of-war competition at the 50-yard line. After the U.S. team literally pulled a win in the final round, the troops gave way for the children of Camp Zama to take a tug on the rope.
The physical prowess and playful banter among the teams gave way to solemn pride as Pasquarette led 14 Soldiers in reciting the Oath of Enlistment during a mass reenlistment ceremony that honored their decision to voluntarily extend their service to their country and the United States Army.
The festivities concluded with an award presentation that recognized the winners of the 2016 USARJ Army Sports Week Competition. U.S. Army Aviation Battalion took first place, while the 78th Signal Battalion and the U.S. Army Medical Activity-Japan earned second and third place, respectively.
Pasquarette and Army Command Sgt. Maj. Richard R. Clark, command sergeant major, USARJ, also recognized other notable individuals and organizations that recently demonstrated the honor and pride of the Camp Zama community.
Fara McKinley, president of the Zama Community Spouses Association, received an award for her association’s donation of water bottles for the competitors and spectators. USARJ also recognized Shinobu Matsui, general manager of the Camp Zama Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES), for earning the Director/CEO Cup, the highest honor for operational excellence among all AAFES chains in the “Small Exchange” category.
Pasquarette and Clark also presented certificates, medals or trophies to the U.S. Army Japan Band for winning the 2016 Music Performance Team of the Year award, Army Sgt. Drew Ayers and Army Spc. Lucas Patron for their selection as the 2016 USARJ Best Warrior Noncommissioned Officer and Soldier of the Year, and Sheyenne Sullivan for her exemplary performance in her assistance to displaced evacuees effected by April’s earthquakes in Kumamoto, Japan.

Kaibab Formation: Thickness: 200-500 ft.
Deposited 270 million years ago, during the Paleozoic Era - Early Middle Permian Period, the Kaibab Formation is the topmost rock layer at the Grand Canyon.
It is largely made up of light colored limestones and is a cliff forming unit.
The Kaibab Formation contains numerous fossils indicative of a warm and shallow water environment, including crinoids, brachiopods, bryozoans, and sponges.
Chert, which forms irregular blobs and nodules, is common in the Kaibab. Chert is composed of silica and, as it is more resistant to weathering, can often be seen protruding from the rock around it.
It often forms where there is an empty space in the rock, such as in a worm burrow. It also forms where an organism made primarily of silica, such as a sponge, has been buried. Most of the sponges in the Kaibab Formation are preserved in chert.
The Kaibab Limestone is also distinct in that it is readily dissolved, resulting in the formation of karst topography on the canyon’s rims.
Numerous caves and sinkholes are present in the Kaibab, particularly on the North Rim.
While the Kaibab Limestone now caps Grand Canyon’s rims, many more rock layers once sat above the Kaibab.
Perhaps as much as one mile (1.6 km) of Mesozoic rock layers once covered the Kaibab Formation. Remnants of these rock layers exist near Grand Canyon, including Cedar Mountain and Red Butte.
When I walked into Keukenhof, I truly felt this is what heaven must be like. Flower beds with different form and formation for acres and acres for eyes to see and the air is filled with flower smell. It was just stunningly amazing and relaxing... Unfortunately this beautiful place can only be enjoyed between April 10 and May 17. It is closed before and after.
Keukenhof ("Kitchen garden"), also known as the Garden of Europe, is one of the world's largest flower gardens. It is situated in Lisse, the Netherlands. Peculiar and strange ice formations are almost everywhere to be found and the great thing about it is that they change constantly.

Blue Canyon is really a fantastic place. It is composed of sandstone, carved and eroded by thousands of years of water and wind.
The feature of the sandstone that makes this site so special is the degree of contrast between the chocolate brown and white layers. The brown layers are quite smooth, while the white layers seem to be almost corrugated.
We (Walter, John, and I) planned this trip when we heard that a flicker friend of ours from Italy (Federica) and her nephew (Francesco) were going to visit the Southwest and wanted to see Blue Canyon. Well, it was a no-brainer, and we decided we would all meet in a nearby town and visit this location together.
Since my brother John had visited it on a previous occasion, we knew how to get there, but we had a number of problems -- the worst one being a flooded wash just before the actual location. The water was a couple of feet deep, thirty or forty feet wide, and quite swift, preventing our crossing the wash. We ended up having to drive another couple of hours to come to the site from the other side. Turns out, it was well worth it for all concerned...
