2003 stainless steel plate is the basic material of this sculpture by Rick Kirby at the entrance to Ravenswood estate, Ipswich, Suffolk. Ravenswood is built on the site of the former airport ( the map suggests that the airport is still there but it definitely isn't) and the sculpture is a tribute to the use of that airport for operational purposes during WWII.

These are not models of planes, however but a group of female figures ( planes being traditionally assigned the feminine gender) flying in formation through the air. The supports represent the searchlights.

They may not have won, but they were very impressive and inspiring to watch: Team GB's Ian Stannard, David Millar, Bradley Wiggins, Chris Froome and Mark Cavendish led the Peloton for much of the Olympic Men's Road Race. Unfortunately for GB a breakaway group got too far ahead for a medal rush at the end.
UPDATE: 4 years on, Mark Cavendish finally won an Olympic medal on the track in Rio! Chapeau!
