In my backyard one day, late morning into the afternoon I looked up and saw these beautiful clouds in the sky with the sun shining through. I thought WOW, this is gorgeous and started shooting. Another picture from the airshow last year. One of the displays was a Vought F4 Corsair flying in formation with a North American Aviation P-51 Mustang. I do not know the variants here. These are one of few privately owned and working examples of these amazing machines. In World War II aviation made crazy leaps and bounds. From the first heavier than air manned flight by the Wright Brothers in 1902 to 1940 where we have the first flight of the P-51 technology was only beginning to speed up. Yet it took us thousands of years of experimenting with sticks, stones, and iron to get us there.
One of those happy accidents. I was concentrating on the rock formation when just as I fired the shutter the Fulmar and Rook? added their own.

The official arrival day of the F18F Super Hornet which replaces the F111 until the JSF arrives to replace all Hornets.
Not quite sure of the bird species but I liked the flying formation. Taken at Gray Lodge wildlife area near Gridley California.

After the tight, almost sculptural alignment of the previous flight, the formation begins to loosen. The Arctic terns drift apart, their synchronized movement giving way to individual trajectories. Against the layered backdrop of rock and distant ice-capped plateaus, the birds now occupy the sky with more space between them, signaling a subtle shift in rhythm.
This moment feels transitional. The collective energy of the group softens, preparing the eye for what comes next. Each bird starts to assert its own path, its own gesture, no longer bound to the geometry of formation flight. The landscape remains unchanged, ancient and immobile, while the choreography in the air evolves.
Seen in sequence, this image acts as a threshold. It closes the chapter of shared motion and opens the way toward solitude, where the attention will soon rest on a single bird, suspended alone between sky and stone.

a rock formation with two arches carved by the waves...we stopped here in the rain on the way north and again on the way south when it was drier...this is the dry day...
