July 1st - Memorial Day Service

The service this year was special, since work has been done on the War Memorial and new flowers have been planted. A new plaque was unveiled with the names of citizens who made the supreme sacrifice, the access road has been renamed L.T. Stick Drive, and Forget-me-nots were given out as part of the service.

We're keeping Duncanville, TX beautiful by applying Wet & Forget throughout the town to remove moss, mold, mildew, and algae stains!

This alpine variety is very small, only ½ inch across, on a stem approximately 6-9 inches high. It blooms from June through mid-July. This is the state flower of Alaska and was officially adopted by the territorial legislature in 1949, with this poem:

So in thinking for an emblem

For this Empire of the North

We will choose this azure flower

That the golden days bring forth,

For we want men to remember

That Alaska came to stay

Though she slept unknown for ages

And awakened in a day.

So although they say we’re living

In the land that God forgot,

We’ll recall Alaska to them

With our blue Forget-me-not.

I was inspired to photograph the forget-me-not and share it after seeing Johanna’s excellent capture of Finland’s national flower, the kielo.

The Marjorie McNeely Conservatory is part of St. Paul's Como Park, a 300-acre public park established in 1873. The conservatory opened in 1915 and contains over a half-acre of indoor gardens and plant life, including a wonderful Japanese garden, the Sunken Garden, and the 64-foot high Palm Dome. Admission is free as is the adjoining Como Zoo.
