Forged in Detroit - There's something about seeing "Detroit" forged in metal that's pretty cool. Say what you want about the city, but you have to admit their utility covers are sweet!
By the way, this might look amazing printed on metal and hanging on a wall.

Industrial steam locomotive crossing Forge Lane to enter the yard of Bradford Colliery in 1948. The view is taken from outside the Burton's shop in Ashton New Road. The colliery closed in 1968 and today even Forge Lane has completely vanished under the surrounds to the Etihad Stadium.

The bellows dominates the forge, providing a source of oxygen to keep the charcoal burning. The panes in the oak-framed casement windows are tanned animal hides treated with oil, to allow light inside. Most of the ironware used for the doors, windows and fireplaces was forged by the blacksmith who also made and repaired tools and manufactured trade goods. Repairs to military equipment were made by the armourer or locksmith. These men received a higher salary than the apothecary or surgeon, demonstrating how highly these trades were valued.

Valley Forge was the winter encampment of the Continental Army, under the command of George Washington, during the American Revolutionary War.
I feel I'm milking it a bit with all these Speeder/Scout Trooper pics. But, it's pure coincidence that I got the Series 14 Crazy Scientist today and thought I'd try the arms out on this guy.

The Pigeon Forge Parkway is usually very dense in traffic. Especially during holidays and weekends when the average speed is slower than if you were walking. But that is a testament to the popularity of the town which is filled with hundreds of shops and family orientated entertainment attractions. On this particular weekend, a classic car rally occurred with literally thousands of old cars and trucks filling the road and parking lots.
Forge - Grinding
Here is one of that last shots from my first forging experience this past weekend in Regina, Saskatchewan. Forging steel is done by repeatedly heating steel and forcefully moulding it into shape. In this case, it is shaping it into a blade. By running the blade over a bench grinder, it gives the metal a nice shine in the right light.

There are magnificent views in Valley Forge. As I have been discovering and recording its history, I have also been discovering its beauty. This particular place is a great place to go and watch the sun set. As you can see the sun has not yet set but is low in the sky. It lit the crest of the hill for a short time and I was lucky enought to be there when it did.

Entry for Colossal Castle Contest XVI - Classic Castle Category. UPDATE: Delighted to say I got the top honourable mention for this build, coming second out of 17 amazing entries.
Unsettling forces were rising in the Knightly Realms. To the South, the Black Knights were waxing as a conquering faction and had already taken two of the southern Lion Knight’s mountain fortresses, claiming that the land had been rightfully theirs by law and blood. The Lion Knights had allied with the Black Falcons in response and soon the latter were moving through Lion lands in preparation for the whole sale invasion all were now expecting.
Ellyn, the famous landlady of a famous Guarded Inn near the recently taken southern castle Elsinore, had made a lucky escape with some of her soldier customers, along with a blacksmith. Together, they had made the journey north to the defended town of Barimoor, where the blacksmith had a brother. This brother had offered her a modest room in his house. She returned the favour first by repainting the run down old forge in colours that reminded her of home. Ever resourceful, she started serving drinks to his customers as they waited, and soon enough the three of them were doing a roaring trade together.
I'd been wanting to make a totally classic looking castle build for ages, so this seemed like the ideal opportunity. Since they never actually produced a classic tudor house with jettying back in the 80s, that's where I started. In some ways those original 80s/early 90s sets have never been surpassed for design. This build is a paean to my early castle sets, and Lego's wonderful printed panel pieces from that era, which though much maligned now, actually formed the bulk of all castle builds. Those red panels are genius because the lines are precisely one plate thick and they align perfectly with plates allowing you to create a seamless facade. Brilliant.
The rules say “In the style of” which I took to mean:
-Green baseplate
-Original 80s colours as far as possible. (I had to dip into my reddish brown stash, but I much prefer original brown as a shade and luckily had most of the pieces I needed).
-Extensive use of panel pieces for the bulk of the building
-As many studs exposed as possible, using almost exclusively conventional studs up building.
-Using mostly parts/moulds available in the 80s and early 90s. I only used 3 modern elements in total - all 3 in the anvils.
-Original weapons/tools/accessories and minifigures from lion knights/crusaders sets as stipulated (this was interesting - didn’t know for instance that lion knights had crossbows, but they did in set 6081). I couldn’t resist using my favourite classic curved doors which were in the first castle lego set I ever got - set 6034, still one of my favourites. They are also from 1990, but from a Black Knights set. But the Lion Knights set 6081 has the larger versions of the same doors so I didn’t feel too bad. I also used a Dragon Knights panel from 1993 to represent ornate ironwork... outrageous.
-SNOT only with period appropriate parts and in a very limited way - used here in the weather vane and for the vines.
-not too large, or too many pieces (though admittedly this is larger than any existing civilian set).

Dare you see a Soul at the "White Heat"?
Then crouch within the door -
Red - is the Fire's common tint -
But when the quickened Ore
Has sated Flame's conditions -
She quivers from the Forge
Without a color, but the Light
Of unannointed Blaze -
Least Village, boasts it's Blacksmith -
Whose Anvil's even ring
Stands symbol for the finer Forge
That soundless tugs - within -
Refining these impatient Ores
With Hammer, and with Blaze
Until the Designated Light
Repudiate the Forge -
Raffinando questi impazienti Metalli
Col Martello, e con la Vampa
Finché la Luce Designata
Ripudia la Fucina -
