Adscita statices taken at Ainsdale NNR nr. Southport. I saw 16 of these beautiful and striking moths this day - the most I've ever seen at this site where I've seen them every summer since 2013. They're only found at a few sites in the NW of England so seeing so many was amazing. You almost always find them nectaring on ragwort but this one was sat on a foxglove, making for a very colourful image
Today I revisited an abandoned building which had previously had a few interesting but clearly neglected cars in it, including a Mercedes W115 (which can be seen in front), however what I found was a few newer but equally neglected cars, the most valuable of which was this Subaru Forester. Why such a new and valuable car is doing in such a state is a mystery, although it does seem very dodgy that cars like this would be left in an unguarded shell. I don't want to jump to conclusions but it wouldn't surprise me if some of them were stolen.

In 2009 I wasn't nearly as active on Flickr, but was taking lots of photographs. There are quite a few untapped images in folders from that year, and some are worth sharing even this many years later.
I've learned a lot about how to shoot this type of subject between then and now, and the gear has gotten so much better, but I still like this capture of the very tiny, very flitty-type moth.
A day flying Moth described as local. Luckily we have a site just north of Cardiff, on coal spoil, where it is common.

The hall was purchased in 1881 by the Ancient Order of Foresters. Today it's the Whitstable Museum and Gallery. Wikipedia describes it as being like the Tardis in that "the tiny doorway opens up into a large hall of displays".
With my mattress. Before I gave it to some hiker who needed it more than me. I regretted my decision to give away my whole mattress every night afterwards. Many times I am so excited to help others that I forget about me.
Next time I am in a similar situation where somebody needs a mattress on the trail, I will cut my mattress in half and keep half for me. It's very rough and cold to sleep directly on the ground especially when sleeping on wet or rocky land above 10,000 ft. A small part of that mattress would have helped me protect my back and my organs, keep them warm and get some sleep. I can sleep with the legs in the backpack and the head on the towel. It sounds funny but this is what I did. I rolled the small towel, put it in a bag and it looked like a pillow.
The positive side of the story: the fact that my nights were unbearably cold and uncomfortable made me walk more and faster every day and night and that's why I walked the 222 miles (375 km) in only 9 days. I was eager to be in my bed and have a hot bath. Every night I was dreaming about it. But every day I was happy to be there! Every morning I would instantly forget how hard the night was and was smiling and enjoying being there.

Architects: Christine & Russell Forester (1971)
Location: La Jolla (San Diego), CA
Russell Forester was a prolific architect in San Diego in the post-war period, and had studied under Mies Van Der Rohe at IIT in Chicago. He is responsible for many high profile buildings around San Diego in the 50s and 60s, including all of the Jack in the Box restaurants for the first several design iterations.
In his 50s, he gave up architecture to focus on his first love - art. He was an extremely gifted artist who left many public works (sculptures) throughout the county, as well as paintings and other media. He passed away in 2002. His widow, Christine Forester, who collaborated on the design and is an accomplished architect and artist, still lives in this house.
He was made by David Kemp in 1995, who said. "The Ancient Forester, a figure of great antiquity, lurks deep in the Gothic forests and wilderness between our ears. He represents an idealised image of man the hunter, the mystic, the guardian. He lives in responsible husbandry with nature."
The second generation of the Subaru Forester was sold between 2002 and 2008. This is a version with a 2.0 litre flat-4 turbo engine. Like most larger Subarus it has all-wheel drive drive. It's still with its first owner.

In Northern Ireland, Forester moths have a very limited distribution, with only 1 site known to have a population hanging on. The site is a tiny boggy glade located in the middle of a large floating forest - which used to be a shallow lake some couple of hundred years ago. Time your visit right, and among the humming of abundant other insects, you could find these tiny little green gems hopping from flower to flower of their favourite nectar-plant; Marsh Cinquefoil.
