A Forester moth (Adscita statices) at Barbury Castle Ironage hillfort.

"One of the commonest of the day-flying moths this species is recognisable due to its iridescent green colouration. The larvae feed on sorrel. The Cistus forester is smaller and less common but both are seen at Barbury Castle."

W last saw one of these on Islay off the west coast of Scotland.

The first invertebrate capture of the season. Photographed in the Holland Sand Prairie State Natural Area near Holmen, Wisconsin.

I have a dark blue Forester Sport, but I had to photograph this silver one when I walked by it.

Forester moth (Adscita statices), probably male, on willowherb. Holme Fen National Nature Reserve, Cambridgeshire. Thursday 14th July 2016.

Not the sharpest photo I've ever taken, which is why I haven't uploaded it before, but I learned recently that this was the first record of the Forester at Holme Fen for nearly 20 years, despite considerable efforts having been made over the intervening years to find it again.

The Forester moth was added to the UK Biodiversity Action Plan list of priority species in the 2007 review. Numbers have declined as a result of agricultural intensification and there are no known colonies local to Huntingdonshire. However, there were certainly quite a few flying around at Holme Fen on the day this image was taken, so I'm hoping that they may have established a colony there and that the habitat can be managed in a way that will encourage them to stay.

In Explore, 30th January 2017.

This is my son's first car. A 2006 Subaru Forester X Luxury. He bought it when he was just about to get his licence a couple of years ago and has driven it on excursions, often fishing related, around Victoria. I have driven it more than a few times and found it to be quite suitable.

Unfortunately, in early February, some miscreants decided to blitz our small seaside village and steal cars. It is somewhat unusual for them to take such an old car, but they did in broad daylight. It was recovered a few days later, but the engine had been thrashed.

Joshua is naturally somewhat disaffected by all of this and has since replaced the car with a Nissan Navarra.

I have taken this on, because I do not want the end of the story to be that the car was destroyed by these people. Over the years, I have often thought about restoring a car but have been discouraged by my lack of mechanical knowledge or ability and more recently, after the crash I was in last year, by a reluctance to drive anything pre-2000 on a public road.

In an effort to turn a negative into a positive, Samuel and I have sourced another Forester of a similar vintage, but with a less well appointed body, and are going to perform a transplant. Given the donor car is manual, which is our preference, we are going to basically remove the engine, overhaul it and then transplant all the running gear into this one, thereby resurrecting it as a manual, off road camping vehicle.

No idea how long it will take, but Samuel has done a couple of engine swaps in other cars, so hopefully we will be done by spring.

I will document the project at my blog, msavageesq.blogspot.com

Thanks to a tip-off, I still had time to catch up with numbers of these moths feeding on 'ragged robin' on a nearby common....

JMT, the Northern approach to Forester Pass above Lake At 12,000'. Fun with hunting Ansel's art. This was an early attempt at Ansel Adam's "Junction Peak". Part of a panorama, I'm off by the distance of the rock right of the foreground snow. So time to let subjectivity play, the Ansel can wait. Believe it in pictures, that rock hasn't moved in 100+ years.

This adorable moth is very active and never stops moving while nectaring on flowers. Here on Mountain Mint (Pycnathemum muticum).

We think these were Adscita statices rather than A. geryon (cistus forester) but its hard to be certain.

Fish, insects, other small aquatic life. Diet is mostly fish at all seasons, but in summer on marshes may eat many insects. Also eats small crustaceans, frogs.

45231 Sherwood Forester heading back to Crewe Heritage Centre on a test run in January. All main line steam confined to barracks for a while and maybe the same fate awaits the rest of us depending on age, condition and fitness to run! The building at the bottom corner is Lockgate Coffee House which will no doubt struggle to keep afloat - it is on the A49 near Beeston Castle and is now providing a takeaway service and the option to use the outside seating for an alfresco lunch or a tea and cake break. Add a nice walk there and back along the canal and everyone's a winner.

Top of Forester Pass, looking south right above the deep ravine that cuts down the south side. Late in the day. Camp would be at the second lake on the left, about an hour later. One more day to Whitney summit from there.
