Striking diving duck of coastal harbors, mountain lakes, and large rivers. Very similar to Common Goldeneye. Males are easiest: Barrow’s has more black on the back, a downward-pointing spur on the side, and a crescent-shaped (not circular) white patch on the face. Females can be very difficult. Barrow’s usually has a yellow bill, but Common can rarely show a dull yellowish bill. Head and bill shape are important: Barrow’s has a steeper forehead and a puffy nape, and a shorter bill with a more rounded lower edge. Fairly common in western U.S. and Canada; much less common in the northeast. Small population in Iceland. Frequently found in mixed flocks with Common Goldeneye. (eBird)

Breeding males have obvious white blaze on forehead and broad green slash behind eye. Females are plainer brown with rusty sides. Females are very difficult to distinguish from female Eurasian Wigeon; note colder grayish-brown head on American that contrasts with warmer orangey sides. Also look for brighter white, not gray, underwings in flight, but this can be difficult to judge, especially at a distance. Widespread and common in North America, occasionally wintering as far south as northern South America. Typically in flocks on lakes and wetlands, often grazing in nearby fields. Regular vagrant to Europe. (eBird)

Noisy lapwing with a large yellow wattle across forehead and hanging over the bill. Two subspecies: southern “Black-shouldered” subspecies has a black shoulder band (not meeting in middle as on Banded Lapwing) and a larger black cap. Northern subspecies lacks black shoulder band and has a larger yellow wattle. Only “Black-shouldered” subspecies occurs in New Zealand. Abundant in most open country, being a common feature of urban parks, sporting fields, paddocks, riverbeds, wetlands, and coastal habitats. (eBird)

A fairly large, colorful swallow. Usually easy to identify with its long, forked tail and dark rump. Iridescent navy-blue above with a rich orange throat and forehead. Underparts vary across range, from bright buffy-orange to whitish. Occurs in any open habitat, especially large fields and wetlands. Often seen foraging in flocks, sometimes mixed with other species of swallow. Typically nests close to human habitation; builds a muddy cup nest in a barn or under a dock. Listen for dry, scratchy “svit svit” calls. Note head and breast pattern and tail length to help separate from various similar species in Africa, Asia, and Australia (e.g., Welcome Swallow, Angolan Swallow, Pacific Swallow). (eBird)

She is the smallest and most fierce of my cats (she can also be very lovable, on her terms, of course)! Named Bindi because of the mark on her forehead. “A bindi (Hindi: बिंदी, from Sanskrit बिन्दु bindú, meaning "point, drop, dot or small particle") is a coloured dot worn on the centre of the forehead, originally by Hindus and Jains from the Indian subcontinent. Bindu is considered the point at which creation begins and may become unity. It is also described as "the sacred symbol of the cosmos in its unmanifested state" Quoted narrative credit to Wikipedia.
Sandhill Crane.
Between 34 to 48 inches in length with a wingspan of nearly 7 feet. They are very tall with a long neck and long legs. Largely gray with a red forehead. Juveniles browner with no red on head. Plumage often appears a rusty color because of iron stains from water of ponds or marshes.
They inhabit large freshwater marshes, prairie ponds and marshy tundra. They are also on prairies and grain fields during migration and in winter.
They range from Siberia and Alaska east across arctic Canada to the Hudson Bay and south to western Ontario. There are isolated populations in the Rocky Mountians, northern prairies, and the Great Lakes region along with in Mississippi, Georgia and Florida. They winter in California's Central Valley and across the southern states from Arizona to Florida. They can also be found in Cuba.

Male Yellow Finch in process of changing to Spring/Summer colors. The chest and back will change to all bright yellow and the forehead will change to black.
These are unmistakable birds, although often inconspicuous in the treetops. They are 45 cm long, including a long tail. Their plumage is glossy violet except for the thick red bill, yellow forehead and chestnut crown. In flight, Violet Turaco's crimson primary flight feathers contrast with the violet plumage.

The coot grows 32 to 42 centimeters and weighs 585 to 1100 grams. The feathers are completely black, the beak and forehead shield are white and the eyes are red. The coot has large blue-green legs with splayed swim lobes. Both sexes have the same appearance.
The coot dives a lot, especially when looking for aquatic plants. He does not like to fly, but prefers to run on the water. Also when taking off from the water, a lot of running is done. However, in migration, which usually takes place at night, it can travel long distances.
The coot is an omnivore, which mainly feeds on aquatic plants, molluscs and aquatic insects. Seeds, grass and berries are also eaten. The coot is monogamous.
The nest is built on the waterfront from reed and water plants, but also from floating waste such as pieces of paper or plastic. In a nest, 5 to 10 gray-white to sand-colored eggs with brown-black spots and dots are hatched over a period of 21 to 25 days. The young are supervised by both parents and can fly after about 8 weeks. If only a single young or even none survives from a nest (because the young are a sought after prey for herons, gulls and pike), the parents make another attempt. The parents make 2 to 3 attempts to raise a nest of youngsters per breeding season. A coot lives an average of ten years.
The coot is found on large waters, ponds and lakes, as well as in parks, canals and ditches. It is found in Europe, North Africa, Asia and Australia. In the Netherlands it is a general breeding bird - in 2015 there were 140,000 breeding pairs. The bird is also very common in Flanders. Outside the breeding season, large groups of migrants and winter guests occur. The coot is also called 'water chicken'.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Small, plump, pale plover; the color of dry sand. In breeding plumage look for thin broken black collar across chest, black stripe across forehead, orange legs, and orange bill with black tip. Nonbreeding and immature birds have black bills and sandy-colored breastbands. White wingstripe visible in flight. Notably paler than other small plovers, with the exception of Snowy, from which Piping is distinguished by thicker bill and orange legs. Sometimes seen near other shorebirds, but rarely ventures far from the high, dry side of the beach. Often quite vocal; gives a sad-sounding two-parted whistle that drops in pitch: "pwee-doo." A species of great conservation concern, due to coastal development and disturbance at nesting sites on beaches. (eBird)
The Piping Plovers are a rare breeder at Presqu'ile, so when a pair show up, a large area of the beach is roped off to protect them and their potential nest (which looks rather like the scrape behind this bird). If they do lay eggs, their nests will be protected by a large wire mesh cage with holes big enough for the plovers to go in and out, but small enough to keep gulls, raccoons and other predators away from the eggs and chicks.

Or: Brain Salad Surgery
#macromonday
#inice
Explored 16 February, 2021
Waldorf salad, probably. The brainiest salad out there? Maybe for a melting skull that is pondering about The Meaning of Life... It certainly was a surgical challenge to extract a whole, undamaged kernel from those particularly small and hard Brandenburgian walnuts. There are many methods for opening and shelling walnuts and keep the nutmeat intact, and I tried something new after several failed (but delicious and healthy – walnuts are brain food, aren't they?) attempts: I soaked a few nuts in water overnight (to soften the shell) and then used the nutcracker from the top, not along the shelling line like I usually do – for the shelling line I used a knife. Sounds like quite the massacre, I know, but it worked :) As for the ice "cube"... Sorry, but I couldn't resist. I had to buy icecube trays online for this theme anyway, because I don't use ice in beverages (and therefore I didn't have an icecube tray at hand). And when I saw those skull-shaped trays, I knew I had to get them. I also ordered more traditional cube- and orb-shaped ones, so now I'm properly equipped when it comes to all things ice ;)
What I had in mind, of course, was a crystal-clear, perfectly-skulpted skull, and a perfectly placed walnut. At least I got one nicely placed brainy walnut (or nutty brain?) and a fairly recognisable skull out of four attempts. And boy, these ice skulls melt fast (and they move while doing so! Creepy...). I have images where you can see more of the walnut, but by the time more of that was visible, the skull was molten almost beyond recognition. So I chose the image where you can only see a little bit of the "walbrain" emerging from the skull, still covered by a thin layer of ice, and I hope that's enough "In Ice" to qualify for the theme. A rather charming small detail is the tiny (walnut) "hornlet" that appeared on the skull's forehead first – oh dear, who knows whose skull this once was... ;)
HMM, Everyone, and stay safe and cheerful!

Willow flycatchers are one of the largest Empidonax species. This genus of flycatchers can be hard to tell apart because they look so similar. The yellow-bellied flycatcher that I posted on May 18th is in this genus too, and had a noticeable yellow belly. This willow flycatcher's belly is pale gray. Distinguishing characteristics besides the large size are that long bill, flat forehead and lack of a noticeable light-colored ring around its eye. Willow flycatchers nest here at Lake Meyer Park.
A medium-sized duck with large rounded head, small bill and pointed tail. The males has a russet head and neck with a creamy yellow crown and forehead. The breast ispinkish-grey, and the rest of the body is grey and white with a black stern. The female is a greyish brown colour with various mottled patterns. Speculum dull, dark.
The Icelandic breeding component of this population winters mostly in Ireland and western Britain, though some continue on to parts of continental Europe.

"I'm tired..." She said, sliding down on the ground, hovering over to rest, her hair cascading down over her face.
A wet nose poked her forehead till she felt warm furs caressing her chest. Her arms wrapped around tight, face pressing into the softness and comfort. A sigh of relief escaped her lips.
"What benefit does fighting bring you anyway?" The lone one asked.
She took a moment to think of that question. "Validation? Answers? Truths?" She shrugged her shoulders. "Justice..." she whispered.
"And when you win, is it worth it?"
"Sometimes..." she admitted. "Other times I just accept...defeat."

Distinctive stocky waterbird. Adult is dark gray overall with a white bill and forehead shield. Immature has a pale breast and a duller bill that becomes brighter white with age. When walking on shore, note big feet with lobed toes. Inhabits both freshwater and brackish marshes, lakeshores, and riverways; occasionally on saltwater. Breeding pairs aggressively territorial but nonbreeding flocks can number in hundreds. Unmistakable throughout much of range, but compare with very similar Red-knobbed Coot in areas of overlap. Calls are diverse, and include various high-pitched squeaks, squawks, and shorter, more clipped notes. (eBird)

In Greek mythology, Athena was believed to have been born from the forehead of her father Zeus. In some versions of the story, Athena has no mother and is born from Zeus' forehead by parthenogenesis. In others, such as Hesiod's Theogony, Zeus swallows his consort Metis, who was pregnant with Athena; in this version, Athena is first born within Zeus and then escapes from his body through his forehead. In the founding myth of Athens, Athena bested Poseidon in a competition over patronage of the city by creating the first olive tree. She was known as Athena Parthenos "Athena the Virgin," but in one archaic Attic myth, the god Hephaestus tried and failed to rape her, resulting in Gaia giving birth to Erichthonius, an important Athenian founding hero. Athena was the patron goddess of heroic endeavor; she was believed to have aided the heroes Perseus, Heracles, Bellerophon, and Jason. Along with Aphrodite and Hera, Athena was one of the three goddesses whose feud resulted in the beginning of the Trojan War.

Her bangs are a ring on her forehead,
The most beautiful rose of Granada with a whore on his chest
The golden cup is in every hand, the sun is in every heart;
Spain is on this rose tonight with its presence.

He looks like he's killing with a turn of his head...
Rose skin, ember lips, coal eyes, kohl...
The devil says that one should kiss the wrapper a hundred times...
To the dazzling shawl, to the enchanting rose,
To the bell that fills every heart, from every chest: Ole!
I thought I was seeing a Purple Gallinule on steroids, but the color was slightly off and the red forehead shield was more like the less colorful Common Gallinule. A park volunteer identified it as yet another Florida invasive species, the Gray-headed Swamp Hen (from Asia).
According to the Cornell Lab ("All About Birds"), this large, aggressive rail "escaped" captivity and has expanded its range beyond the south of Florida. In 2006-2008, 3187 swamp hens were culled by various Florida agencies, but it had no apparent effect on the population.
I photographed swamp hens in two locations, this one at Celery Fields, another at Wakodahatchee Wetlands, Florida.

It is the mansion of yesterday, the one from my childhood,
with homely tenderness and bosom warmth,
that still raises its forehead, on the verge of agony,
in the meantime collapse to which nothing is foreign.
The ancestral wing appears melancholy
of the crazy old swarm, today with distant beings
and in the shadow of mother, loving, is added
the protective tone, the watchful eyes.
The children lived it, charm of abode;
scents of her patio, shy honeysuckle
with the white jasmines in the blue bower.
And we keep silence so that the soul returns
to remember images of the happy years,
now feeling like intruders or strangers.

"Forgive me, everybody," whispered the hunger artist, only the overseer, who had his ear to the bars, understood him.
"Of course," said the overseer, and tapped his forehead with a finger to let the attendants know what state the man was in, "we forgive you."
"I always wanted you to admire my fasting," said the hunger artist.
"We do admire it," said the overseer, affably.
"But you shouldn't admire it," said the hunger artist.
"Well then we don't admire it," said the overseer, "but why shouldn't we admire it?" "Because I have to fast, I can't help it," said the hunger artist.
"What a fellow you are," said the overseer, "and why can't you help it?"
"Because," said the hunger artist, lifting his head a little and speaking, with his lips pursed, as if for a kiss, right into the overseer's ear, so that no syllable might be lost, "because I couldn't find the food I liked. If I had found it, believe me, I should have made no fuss and stuffed myself like you or anyone else."
These were his last words, but in his dimming eyes remained the firm though no longer proud persuasion that he was continuing to fast.
