The first national dialogue platform on forecast-based financing in Nepal (pictured) was held in Kathmandu at the end of November 2019, organized by the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS) and the World Food Programme. FbF was first piloted in Nepal by the NRCS in 2018 with a project for 80 households near the River Babai, Bardiya district, that included an introduction for local authorities and the NRCS district chapter, planning, fieldwork such as mapping alternative access routes to affected areas, and confirmation of evacuation sites together with the authorities. A new FbF project was piloted the following year in the same River Babai basin, applying an approach recommended by the Climate Centre. As part of that project a drill enabled Red Cross volunteers to prepared temporary toilets for evacuees. Other preparation for the FbF response included trainings of the volunteers and local authorities, supplier mapping and data collection. “We are pleased to be researching an innovative disaster response mechanism in Nepal,” said Under Secretary Shambhu Prasad Regmi from National Emergency Operation Center during the National Dialogue Platform. Despite a forecast of rain 18 volunteers from Clean Bread and Cheese Creek arrived at 18 am to cleanup Stansbury Park and Pond. Volunteers in waders walked the interior perimeter of the ponds while a second volunteer shadowed them on the shoreline to ensure no trash was missed. Other volunteers walked along the walking paths, through the tot lots and scoured the outfall pipes from Lynch Cove Run. After four hours the park and pond had been scoured clean by all our wonderful volunteers! The final tally of this cleanup: 27 bags of trash (Including 57 golf balls!), 2 tires, 1 shopping cart, 1 pallet and a huge steel pole!
Our Volunteers did a fantastic job at today’s cleanup (they always do!) and Stansbury Park and Pond looks beautiful once more! Everybody deserves a safe and trash free place to enjoy nature and I am so glad we were able to help with this!
Despite an abysmal weather forecast, Clean Bread and Cheese Creek Community Cleanups had an absolutely beautiful day to work with over 65 incredible volunteers to cleanup Lynch Cove Run. We removed over 275 bags of trash, 5 chairs, 4 couches, 3 mattresses and box springs, 2 broken concrete bird baths, a leather sectional, a kiddie pool, metal fencing, a storm door, a marine fuel tank, a dishwasher, a cat tree, a suitcase, and much more- completely filling a 40 yard dumpster!!! Thank you everyone so very much for all your incredible hard work! Our volunteer dedication to working toward a cleaner, greener, healthier community and environment cannot be topped!

On Thursday (8/20/15) despite a forecasted rain deluge over 90 volunteers worked with us to remover over 130 bags of trash including countless plastic beverage containers, 7 shoes, 3 broken fishing rods, and a burnt couch from Watersedge Park and Shoreline! We were very thankful to have three busloads of incoming freshmen from Towson University, members of AmeriCorps NCCC and local residents who joined us to beautiful this park and beach. Mother Nature truly smiled upon us once again delaying the rain until well after out cleanup finished!
We are also extremely thankful for the very generous donation of doughnuts from Entenmans’ Bakery Outlet to help fuel our incredible volunteers and the wonderful donation of ice cream from ColdStone Creamery of Whitemarsh was an incredible treat to finish out very warm and successful cleanup! Thank you Tara Modo for taking many of the photos at this event!
We would like to send a special out to WJZ-TV who came out to film all the hard work of our awesome volunteers as well as to film Promotional TV spots with many of our volunteer which will begin airing throughout the day over the next few weeks!

The weather forecast this morning was not good with showers and longer periods of rain expected through much of the day. However there was a short clear spell expected around mid-morning. Taking that chance I drove round to Holford and parked my car in the village car park. I then walked through the woods to my usual spot for watching the red deer. On the way I almost bumped into a pricket who was on the path.
This picture shows the dominant stag roaring again surrounded by his hinds. One of the hinds that is standing up has almost completed her moult into the winter coat.

We received a couple inches of snow over the weekend and three more are forecast for today. The outlook is snow on Wednesday, Friday, and a major system moving in on Sunday. We will have a white Christmas. Temperatures will be in the mid teens this week with lows falling below zero fahrenheit.

Looks like there are going to be some birds on the backside of the forecasted rain and cold front. You never know, with good migration forecast along with rain, there is always the possibility of some fallouts.
100 Years on.
You certainly would not have needed a radio weather forecast to know that it was a wet day on the 6th of January 1916 when you and 11 of you cobbers left Delegate under the banner announcing yourselves as the Men From Snowy River on a recruitment route march to Goulburn via most parts of the Monaro.
You most likely came from one of the families who were in their second generation or so of settling on the harsh but rewarding country formerly known as the Maneroo and now known as the Monaro. Your people would have been well aware of the need for self-reliance for survival and carried the legacy of all the cracks who had gathered to the fray. You would have been handy with gun and horse as well as extremely practical. You may well have lied about your age.
You would have been well aware of the big blue in Europe and that, as an Empire Man, you were expected to do your bit for King and Country. Besides, they said, it’d be a lark, see the world they said, be part of the cream as a volunteer, they said, not the curds and whey of a conscript, they said. You’ll be home by Christmas, they said. They’ll pay you 5 bob a day they said.
You may have heard the words of recruitment Captain Wedd before the march began, “The famous Monaro brumby is noted for its staying qualities” “whilst the man from Snowy River is noted for his fine physique and stamina”, his language is always colourful.
So it was you set out singing songs like “Marching Through Georgia” as you followed the220 mile route via Bombala, Cooma, Queanbeyan and Bungendore before arriving in Goulburn on 29 January. You had been feted all along the route. In all 142 men arrived in Goulburn, well short of the 200 expected.
In September 1916 you departed Australia as part of the 55th Battalion for England via South Africa with mostly 2 up to while away the time at sea. There may not have been much of that 5 bob a day left by the time you got to Blighty.
By April 1917 the shine had defiantly have gone off the new ball when you found yourself on the Somme rubbing your feet and calves with whale oil to combat trench foot.
The first time you stood at your trench wall waiting for the shriek of the whistle to send you over the top and into battle would have called on every bit of self-reliance you had been taught by the tough life back on the, by now beloved, Monaro.
And so it went on. You may well have been amongst the troops who had become so disenchanted by the British High Commands total disregard for human life that, when reviewed by the King, could not bring themselves to respond to the call for three cheers for the King. You may have been gassed, seen the demise of the Red Barron and fought with the Yanks at the end against the Hindenburg line.
You would have received the news of the signing of the armistice around 10.00am on the 11th of November 1918.
By April of 1919 you would have been set to be demobbed and yet, you who had survived all this, would not all come home together. First home would be the longest serving, followed by those with family responsibilities. Then those assured employment.
During WWI, Australian troops raised (excluding naval forces) numbered 416,809; of these 331,789 took the field. Casualties numbered 215,045; of which 59,342 were killed. Compare this with the nation’s population in 1916 - 4,875,325
You, like most of your compatriots, probably didn’t talk much about your experience afterwards due to general disbelief or indifference. You would have had to wait a mighty long time to see the tears flow freely when Eric Bogle sang “And the band played Waltzing Matilda” and people could finally appreciate what you had been through.
And so, a hundred years later, the descendants and the wider Monaro community gathered to commemorate these events at Delegate over the Australia Day weekend. There was a street march, speeches, a rousing description of what those men went through by that great chronicler of conflict Peter Fitzsimons AM and martial music from the Royal Australian Military College Band.
It was not a celebration, rather a commemoration. Lest we forget.
