1978, Cambodia --- Following their own ideology, the Khmer Rouge leaders engaged their country in a complete agrarian society, to the point that all modern technology was banned. The return to the land was intended to purify the people as a whole and create a basis for a new Communist society, which would eventually return to modern technology. --- Image by © Richard Dudman/Sygma/Corbis

Made in Laurel

Tonight’s photography Tip… I learned that gelato melts quicker than ice cream. Food photography is hard… all sorts of tricks are used to make things look delicious on magazine covers. So, you’ll need to trust me on this, despite the melting scoops shown here, the Haagen Dazs Salted Caramel Gelato is a wonderful thing.

It doesn’t come from Sweden or the Black Forest though. It’s made right here in Laurel at one of the largest ice cream plants in the world. From the corner of RT1 and Whiskey Bottom Road to Food Lion to my freezer can’t be more than 7 miles in total, so it’s pretty fresh too.

Evolved and modernized over the years from the original plant at that location that manufactured High’s ice cream, the Nestle / Dreyer’s Laurel plant employs over 700 people and makes more than 120 different Dreyer's products such as Edy's, Haagen-Dazs, Nestle and Skinny Cow ice-cream products and frozen snacks, including Dreyer's/Edy's Slow Churned Light ice-cream.
