I planted my little garden yesterday: red and gold marigolds in one box, sizzler purple and some sort of border plant in another, and a potted flowering plant whose variety escapes me right now. I just know I have to water it regularly. Here's hoping that asshole squirrel stays away.
As much as I love purple (it's my favorite color) and as happy as I am with these plants, I hate the name: Salvia Sizzler Purple. What is that? Two nouns followed by an adjective? I want to know who is responsible for that name. I'm prepared to go all Strunk & White on his/her ass.

A rare lunchtime walk while working at home. Almost missed the mini heatwave at the end of March 2021.

Flower box on Highfield Road in Hall Green. Was some daffodils in it.
We bought this flower box, made of cedar, from a local nursery. The box itself was a whooping $24. This year the wife wants to have more flower boxes basically spanning the entire rail you see here. Definitely I can't afford to buy like 6 more of these AND then the hangers.
Time for a DIY solution.
As the season ends and summer residents leave this beautiful camp of summer homes, flowers remain as evidence of their visit. This flower-box decorates one of the porches at the Bay View, Michigan, settlement.
Bay View is a camp of beautiful homes located near the City of Petoskey in northwest Michigan (USA). Bay View overlooks Lake Michigan's Little Traverse Bay. The Bay View Association does not allow occupation of these homes during the winter months.
Beginning in 1875 as a Methodist camp, the Bay View Association encouraged scientific and intellectual development within a religious community. In 1885 John M. Hall of Flint, Michigan, began the summer educational assembly program. The Methodist camp meeting resort of Chautauqua, New York, inspired Bay View to organize schools of art, cooking, elocution, and music. In addition, cottagers participated in religious study, reading circles, dramatic and recreational activities. In 1890 Evelyn Hall was built for the Women's Christian Temperance Union. William Jennings Bryan, Bruce Catton, Lillian Hellman, Helen Keller, and Booker T. Washington were among the speakers who came here. Bay View continues to attract cottagers from throughout the United States. I am fortunate to live close enough to Bay View to benefit from several of their summer classes and lectures. The 'camp' is a beautiful place to stroll in a near-Rockwellian setting.

Since I'm not going to be home on my birthday (I'm going to be visiting my brother & attending his college graduation), we decided to celebrate my birthday a few days early. I had the day off work, so Alicia took me to eat at The Back Porch for lunch, and it was sooooo delicious!

When I visited Toyko, many years ago, I visited the Iris Garden at Meiji Jingu Shrine, Shibuya. It was super beautiful with the most Irises I have ever seen. There were many photographers and artists, photographing and painting the flowers - quite lovely. In the trees, beside the large pond, was a beautiful tea house with Geisha ladies to serve the tea ceremony. In a glade beside the gardens was a little shop where every item they sold featured Irises. I still have the Iris vase I bought at that shop.
Each year, I never remember that this Salvia blooms in October...and so I was quite happily surprised to see the lovely Salvia flowers yesterday.
To prevent the wood from splitting when the head of the screw is pushed in, use a countersink add-on to the drill bit. I also put a collar on the countersink so that I can control how deep the counter sink is.
There is a nice picture explaining how this works on the Lee Valley page of this product.
This the planter on one end of the bench celebrating little Golden Books which were published by Simon and Schuster and printed in Racine by Western Printing for many years. This is the Poky Little Puppy story.
The 2019 public art project entries were unveiled last Saturday. They are benches with attached flower boxes built by the Veterans Outreach group and decorated by local artists. The theme is "Racine's Past, Present and Future".
