Newberry National Volcanic Monument was designated on November 5, 1990 to protect the area around the Newberry Volcano in the United States. It was created within the boundaries of the Deschutes National Forest and is managed by the U.S. Forest Service. It includes 50,000 acres (20,000 ha) of lakes, lava flows, and spectacular geologic features in central Oregon. These photos are taken from the summit Paulina Peak 7,985 ft, (2,434 m). Just below us are East Lake and Paulina Lake and The Big Obsidian Flow, created 1,300 years ago, covers 700 acres. It is hard to fathom as you drive through the summit area that you are within a 17 square mile caldera at the summit of a 500 square mile volcano, a volcano that remains very active to this day. Newberry is both seismically and geothermally active. Geologists believe the caldera sits over a shallow magma body only 2 to 5 kilometers deep. Visitors see numerous cinder cones (over 400 throughout the area), miles of basalt flows, as well as rhyolite flows of obsidian.
Some time ago I got myself a second € 6.90 dollie.
Too bad no shop nor department store in my area stocks them. (At least not that I know of).
They're way cuter than any of the trashy dolls little girls go crazy for these days.

Curated by MCAD Assistant Professor Patricia Briggs, "Flow" features works by Noriko Ambe, Ulrike Heydenreich and Inigo Manglano-Ovalle.
Inspired by contemporary philosophical perspectives concerning the relationship between human beings and nature, these artists recalibrate our understanding of this relationship, viewing it as fluid, transparent and caught in the current of time.
Patricia Briggs will lead a curator's gallery talk on Thursday, May 22, starting at 5:30 p.m., followed by a gallery reception from 6 to 8 p.m.
This exhibition is free and open to the public.

Most of the lava we saw was of the chunky, broken rock kind, but every once in a while we saw some lava that was flowing when it cooled. Very cool.

It took awhile this year, but the water started to flow this week. By next weekend, it should be booking along unless we get another cold snap. Inland, some lakes still have 3 feet of ice on them, so it's going to be a late spring in the northland. I wouldn't be surprised if some lakes still have ice in May.
I always enjoy this time of year when ice and liquid water mingle. I love the contrast between the two. With long shutter speeds, I almost feel like you can see steam, too.

Sunset over Second Beach, Olympic National Park, WA
I really wish I had gotten into a better position when the sun started to burst through these clouds. I was on the far end of Second Beach, nowhere near any really eye-catching foreground options and much too far from any of the big sea stacks to use them to anchor the mid ground, so I had to make do with the reflection of a small stream seeping out of the ground at the head of the beach. Not super dynamic, but I LOVE those sun beams.
