From our garden this photo of the constellations Ursa Major and Ursa Minor was taken. The coordinates of our garden are 41.53 deg North, 27.36 deg East in Luleburgaz, a township in Northwest Turkey. The North Star is a member of Ursa Minor and is the closest star to the celestial North Pole. Exposure time of the image is 142.9 sec and I set the focal length to 18 mm so I could cover as large an area as possible. It was a moonless dark sky with small cloud clusters. You can see the stars rotating about the Pole Star. The arc of the star traces can be calculated as 143.9*360/86400 = 0.6 degree. I wish I could keep the exposure time longer in which case you would see larger stellar circles. I didn't do that because I wanted you to recognize the Ursa Major and Ursa Minor. The color of the trees are due to the feeble background light being reflected by them. I didn't do any photo editing except for putting my signature and compressing the image for shorter upload time to Flickr.

Poz suresini uzun tutsaydim daha buyuk yaylar gorecektiniz, ama yildizlari tanimak zorlasacakti. Fotograf aysiz ve karanlik bir gecede cekildi. Agaclarin goruntusu ve rengi cevreden gelen isiklarin yansimasinin 143 saniyedeki birikimi. Uzun poz muddetinden dolayi agaclar biraz da flu cikmis.

I got the idea for this photo from several photos that I have seen on Flickr (more on that later). My original idea was to take the photo from the side. Lookatit (Bob suggested to lay on the ground and take this scene from below - a very good idea, thanks, Bob.

Inspiration

I got the idea for this shot mainly from two photos that I had seen on Flickr.

Recently I saw alessandro silipo's image twice. A very simple, but effective shot of a pair of feet and legs in stockings. That made me think to do something simple with hands and arms.

Longer ago already, I also faved pumpkinoodle's She Can't Wait To Let Go!. That showed me what you can do with a balloon set against a cloudy sky. When I was in Finland, I purchased a set of big size balloons from a party store, to use as photo prop. Because there was no blue in the sky, I picked a red balloon, though, instead of orange.

I used 2 flashes. One 580EX MkII next to camera as master. A 580EX at full power (1/1) on a Manfrotto monopod as a slave. Slave flash was held high by the already tall rheauchyr I used the built-in Canon Speedlite IR communication to trigger the secondary flash.

A fun fact about the House Finch (Haemorhous mexicanus) is that they have a wide range of vocalizations and are excellent song mimics. They can imitate the songs of other bird species, as well as various human-made sounds like car alarms and cell phone ringtones. Male House Finches often incorporate these imitations into their repertoire to attract mates and establish their territory. So, if you hear a House Finch singing a medley of different tunes, it may not be just their own song but a delightful mix of imitations as well!

Saying goodbye is always easier when you know you're going to see someone again but 2014 will only be a memory after tonight and there is some poignancy in that thought.
