We're a perfect match

Did you notice i have lupines stuck in my head these days :)

Despite dogged persistence, we just couldn't get close to the Short-eared owls yesterday. They were living up to the second part of their Latin name 'flammeus', meaning fiery or flaming (a reference to their streaked plumage rather than their uncooperative attitude for photos).

Flaming Gorge Utah is a very large man made reservoir on the Green River. The lake is spread across the border of southwest Wyoming and Northeast Utah.

The rich, melodious song of the Baltimore Oriole, echoing from treetops near homes and parks in the North East, is a sweet herald of spring. Look way up to find these male’s with there brilliant orange plumage which almost blazes down on you. There fondness of fruits and nectar is famous and they can be lured away from the tree tops to feeders to be able to capture them out in the open.

On our recent trip to Woodstock Vermont, I traveled many backroads looking for farms with unusual barns and autumn colors. I found a farm with stone walls; an unusual color paint on the barn and house. Quite beautiful and unlike all the usual red barns everywhere. Since the day was cold, all the horses had on different color blankets. The real beauty though was the flaming red trees. Everything I wanted in a fall composition. Hope you like it. Active Assignment Weekly November 12 - 19: Fire Fire!

WIT: I've always wanted to try those flaming drinks, so I got a shot glass, filled it with vodka and tried to light it. I did not have overproof alcohol, and vodka is only 80 proof, so it wouldn't flame up at room temperature. I microwaved it so it was a quite warm, and then lit it with a long barbecue lighter. It flamed up, but I didn't realize it since I had the light on, and slightly burned my finger. The next time I turned the light off, and saw the blue flame. In post I added a texture to the background to give it a more old-world feel; I also cropped and tweaked the colour to make it a bit more blue-hued in the background.

Warning: don't let the flame go for too long, or the glass will break from the heat - I lost this glass, unfortunately...

Made Explore.

The Red Canyon overlook in Flaming Gorge, in the Northeast corner of Utah. One of our first stops on our recent RV trip. Great trip, good to be home again!

Brilliant sky at dawn.

Our next stop was the Flaming Cliffs, also known as Bayanzag, north-east of the petroglyphs.

It is known for its dinosaur fossils which were first discovered here in the 1920s and many more since.

This image is a crop from a larger mosaic, which I created with data acquired over the years. That makes it difficult to say how much data is in here. Definitely over 30 hours total, likely more, using HaLRGB filters.

By the way, make sure that if you're using Firefox you've got it set to respect color profiles, otherwise this will look hella washed-outer than I'd intended.

Not sure what this bloom is.. seen on the seafront.. possibly 'Tagetes patula Durango Series'

A distinctive duo!

Fringed, cardinal red tulips and sunny yellow tulips with red flames make quite the statement.

Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area, Utah.

91 water-miles long, 360 miles of shoreline. Breathtaking landscapes framed by stratified rocks, canyon and hills. Used to fish in this area over 30 years ago. Didn't know anything about photography then. So nice to visit this place again. This time with a camera.

Warsaw Zoo, flamingos, for the first time after the winter,

were released on their catwalk with pond.Accurate ripples and ablutions- there was no end ..

Shot nearing the northern most part of the gorge.

The wind was blowing so hard that it almost looks like I was sitting on an ocean beach enjoying a cocktail….in reality it was 32 degrees with 50+ MPH winds at Flaming Gorge that day wink emoticon Could barely stand up against the wind to take this shot!

— I had forgotten about this image. If I'm nitpicking I'd say I'm not pleased with it because the longer exposure time meant that some of the bushes blurred. Life is hard, it is harder if one is stupid, as the saying goes. I ought to have used a faster film. Still I like how it looks as if the forest floor is on fire (but in a good way, I hasten to add in these times of extreme heat).

It's been reported elsewhere and many of you have probably noticed it in your own film scans, but there is often quite a bit of cyan present in the blues in an image. It took me a while to realise this but pulling cyan down often helps make the colours look a little bit more believable. Not that that is a requirement. We're out here sailing on the vast Ocean of Creativity so most anything goes.
