Just three hours from the Indian border lies Pokhara, Nepal's second largest city after Kathmandu. A trading hub during Nepal's medieval era, the city today thrives on tourists, who come to the city in droves to relax by the lakeside.
The lake's damn gorgeous, even if it's a little too congested with tourists these days. And just over the ridgeline to the West, if the skies are clear, you can see the kitelike silhouette of Mount Macchapucchere (literally: Fishtail).
Unfortunately, I have no pictures of the peak (or any of the Annapurna Range, for that matter.) My camera decided to have its fifth consecutive lens error the day after I arrived in Nepal :(
Today, the lakeside is a giant backpacker's ghetto. There are kitschy night clubs, sleazy dive bars, a "dance bar" (Nepali euphemism for brothel) here and there. The lake is too polluted to swim in. Snatches of "hash?" and "ganja?" are heard over the constant ambient hum of Bon Jovi cover bands. Lots of the veteran travellers I spoke to lamented the "good ol' days," when the lakeside was still pristine. Suffice to say, it wasn't my favorite place in this gem of a country.
Not to say that Pokhara didn't offer its share of beautiful and memorable moments. At about 4AM on my birthday, my friend and I were awoken by thunderclaps. We walked down to the lakeside to watch the storm. The entire lake would come alive with its own refulgent light each time a bolt burst in the sky. And by morningtime, the air was perfumed with tropical pollen from all sorts of flowers. It was special.

Trekking through the Annapurna region of Nepal, we came across this school with the mountain Machhapuchhare (aka Fishtail) serving as a splendid backdrop.

Machapuchare is a mountain in the Annapurna Himal of north central Nepal. It is revered by the local population as particularly sacred to the god Shiva, and hence is off limits to climbing.

GOC Hertfordshire's walk on 13 July 2019, a 14.8-mile circular walk from Tottenham Hale, down the Lee Navigation via Walthamstow Marshes, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and Mill Meads to Bow Locks, down Limehouse Cut to Limehouse Basin, and up the Regents Canal to King's Cross. 'Giant Fishtail Palm', a palm species from the northern mountains of Thailand. This palm can grow to spectacular proportions.
This specimen is at least 45 maybe 50 feet tall.

Stillwater County. Along West Rosebud Creek, west of Absarokee and a few miles north of the Beartooth Mountains, Fishtail was named either for a local resident or for a distinctive-looking rock formation west of town. A post office first opened at Fishtail in 1901 with Charles Sullivan as postmaster. Pictured is the Fishtail post office building in 2013, the year the Fishtail post office became an RMPO of Columbus (February 9).
Machhapuchre ( Fishtail Peak ) rises above early morning cloud ; its summit sacred and just seven metres short of 7000m.
