The only fishtail palm native to mainland Australia. Grows only on the Cape York Peninsula, in Mungkan Kandju and Kutini-Payamu (Iron Range) National Parks, and similar patches of lowland rainforest and vine forest from there northwards. Altitudinal range from 60-300 m.
I've got the requisite rolled-out-of-bed look down pat, but my hair's still not long enough for the big lush braid.

Caryota mitis Lour. Arecaceae. CN: [Malay - Dudar, Dudur, Setukas, Beredin, Meredin, Rabok], Burmese fishtail palm, Clustered fishtail palm, Tufted fishtail palm. Native of India and Malesia ecozone. Clump-forming fishtail palm up to ca 4 m tall. Habitat - lowland secondary forests. Vertebrate poison and the sap from fruits can cause severe inflammation and itchiness.

Some time towards the end of next week we hope that the long days of sitting will have paid off and that Mrs and YV will be blessed with the patter of tiny claws in the nest. It has not been an easy incubation period with May being the coldest for a hundred years and YV having young and thoughtless moments. There have been a few times when the eggs were left exposed for nearly 20 minutes, putting them at risk from chilling. As in all years we can't count our ospreys before they are hatched.
However, compared with his first week or two Young Victor has slowly been improving, particularly in the fishing department. No longer does Mrs have to keep her 'bait' in bed beside her in case he forgets her. Whereas previously he was catching really only enough for himself and then ignoring Mrs.' cries of hunger he has slowly got the hang of sharing. Just in the last few days he has cottoned onto the fact that if he procures something large then there is more than enough for both of them AND she stops nagging.
For example, a group from the Calvert Trust were down by the Lake at St Bega's Church during the week when they saw him stoop for a fish. They couldn't see what sort it was but said it was so big that he could scarcely pull it out of the water. Yesterday a gurt perch was wrestled into the nest, its red fins and stripes clearly visible. Today saw him catch 3 fish, the last being so cumbersome that it nearly wrenched him off his favourite perch in the alder. In the manner of adult male ospreys he subdued it enough to eat its head and then brought the bulk of the body up to Mrs. It's all looking good for the future of young hatchlings.

Caryota urens L. Arecaceae. CN: Palma ekor ikan, Fishtail palm, Jaggery palm, Kitul-tree, Konda panei, Ana pana, Sago palm, Solitary fishtail palm, Toddy palm, Wine palm. Native to India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar; elsewhere cultivated. The Caryota species are the only palms with bipinnate leaves. Solitary-trunked to 12 meters in height and 30 cm wide. Widely-spaced leaf-scar rings cover the gray trunks which culminate in a 6 m wide, 6 m tall leaf crown. The bipinnate leaves are triangular in shape. The trunks are used as building material and the sap is converted to sugar, wine, and sago.
