Cochin (Inde) - Tout photographe-voyageur qui est à Cochin (Kerala), se sent obligé de faire la "traditionnelle" photo des carrelets chinois. Je n'ai pas dérogé à la règle. Un soir, au soleil couchant, j'ai bénéficié de cette sublime lumière naturelle.
Pour la petit histoire, ces carrelets auraient été importés par des marchands chinois vers les années 1350-1450. On en trouve un peu partout dans le monde fonctionnant sur le même principe, notamment en France.
Aujourd'hui, ces filets de pêche constitués de supports en bois, de cordes, de poulies et de contrepoids sont devenus une vraie attraction touristique et l'emblème officieux de l'ancienne enclave hollandaise.
Moyennant quelques roupies, les pêcheurs vous proposent d'activer le système. Mais ne vous faites pas d'illusions, même si ces carrelets sont toujours utilisés, ils ne capturent que quelques rares petits poissons. Les vraies prises sont faites au large par des pêcheurs travaillant en barque à moteur.
Nets chinese
Cochin (India) - Any photographer-traveler who is in Cochin (Kerala), feels obligated to take the "traditional" picture of nets Chinese. I have not deviated from the rule. One evening, at sunset, I benefited from this sublime natural light.
For the record, these squares would have been imported by Chinese merchants around the years 1350-1450. They are found all over the world operating on the same principle, especially in France.
Today these fishing nets made up of wooden supports, ropes, pulleys and counterweights have become a real tourist attraction and the unofficial emblem of the former Dutch enclave.
For a few rupees, the fishermen offer to activate the system. But don't kid yourself, even though these nets are still in use, they only catch a few fish. The real catches are made offshore by fishermen working in motor boats.

A surreal promontory of shingle, Dungeness lies on a headland on the south part of Romney Marsh. It is formed largely of a shingle beach in the form of a foreland, between New Romney, Lydd and Camber on Romney Marsh and shelters a large area of the low-lying land Romney Marsh, this place is so weird, but beautiful.

The crew allowed the boat to remain in this position while the sun performed it's magic. The water was quite rough even though we were in a bay of the Arabian Sea.
I wrapped my arms around one of the posts in the decaying boat and tried to steady my camera. I planted my feet squarely on the rickety floor of the boat and clicked away. This is being said by a woman who trips on cracks in the sidewalk.
In the end, I came home with hundreds of pictures of the fishing nets! After all, I had travelled thousands of miles for this moment!

In den "Roten Felsen" auf der Insel Helgoland in der Nordsee, bauen die Basstölpel ihre Nester aus Fischernetzen. Diese verlorenen und zerrissenen Netze finden sie in der See und angeschwemmt an Land. Sie werden leider viel zu oft zur tödlichen Falle für diese grazilen Wasservögel, weil sie sich in ihren eigenen Nestern verfangen, sterben sie darin einen qualvollen Tod.
In the "Red Rocks" on the island Helgoland (GER) in the North Sea, the gannets build their nests out of fishing nets. These lost and nets find them in the sea ans stranded ashore. Unfortunately they too often become the deadly trap for these graceful waterbirds, for they get trapped in their own nests, causing them to die an agonizing death.
A fishing boat in the harbour at Oban. Whoever has or had the task to get these nests ready and untangled must have the patience of a saint!.
At first I though the boat may have been decorative but low & behold out it went for the day all crew on board! Looked a bit rusty to me!

Visserij
De visserij in Makkum ontwikkelde zich laat ten opzichte van andere havenplaatsen aan de Zuiderzeekust. Voor de aanleg van de Afsluitdijk wordt er vanuit Makkum voornamelijk op het binnenwater, het Makkumermeer tussen Makkum en Workum, gevist. De visserij op de Zuiderzee blijkt in die tijd erg lastig, mede door de lange zandbank voor de kust wordt de toegang belemmerd. Er wordt in die tijd vanuit Makkum gevist op schelpdieren, op de banken voor de Friese kust en in het gebied wat nu de Waddenzee is. De schelpen worden gebruikt als grondstof in de kalkovens. Rond 1900 zijn er slechts enkele vissers die vanuit Makkum op de Zuiderzee vissen, met name met kleine open scheepjes wordt er met behulp van sleepnetten gevist op haring.
In tegenstelling tot veel andere vissersplaatsen gelegen aan het IJsselmeer, krijgt de Makkumer visserij na de aanleg van de Afsluitdijk juist een impuls. Een aantal vissersfamilies uit o.a. Lemmer verhuist naar Makkum. De Makkumer visserij richt zich naast de visserij op het IJsselmeer ook op de kustvisserij en de Waddenzee. De overgebleven Makkumer vissers vissen tegenwoordig veelal met gecombineerde IJsselmeer- en kustvisserij.

The fishery in Makkum developed late compared to other ports on the Zuiderzee coast. For the construction of the Afsluitdijk, Makkum mainly fishes on the inland water, the Makkumermeer between Makkum and Workum. At that time, fishing on the Zuiderzee turned out to be very difficult, partly due to the long sandbank off the coast, access was impeded. At that time, shellfish were fished from Makkum, on the banks off the Frisian coast and in the area that is now the Wadden Sea. The shells are used as raw material in the lime kilns. Around 1900 there are only a few fishermen who fish from Makkum on the Zuiderzee, especially with small open boats, using trawl nets to fish for herring.
Unlike many other fishing towns located on the IJsselmeer, the Makkumer fishery will receive a boost after the construction of the Afsluitdijk. A number of fishing families from Lemmer, among others, are moving to Makkum. In addition to fishing on the IJsselmeer, the Makkumer fishery also focuses on coastal fisheries and the Wadden Sea. The remaining Makkumer fishermen nowadays mostly fish with combined IJsselmeer and coastal fisheries.
For centuries, fishermen in China have been using trained cormorants to fish in the region's rivers and lakes. To control the birds, fishermen tie a snare near the base of the bird's throat, which prevents them from swallowing large fish, but allows them to swallow smaller fish. When a cormorant catches a fish, the fisherman brings the bird back to the boat and has it spit the fish up onto the bamboo deck. Cormorant fishing has been around in China and Japan since around 960 AD, although these days it's mostly just a tourist attraction.
