The Commerson's frogfish has a specialized spine it can use as a "fishing rod". At the end of this rod is a fuzzy tuft called an esca, which acts as a lure. The frogfish dangles the esca in front of its huge mouth. When a small fish comes to investigate the lure, the frogfish quickly opens its mouth, creating a vacuum that sucks the fish in to be eaten. Usually, the apparatus is laid back against the head and is barely visible. This is my first shot of a frogfish with the "rod & lure" extended.

It was almost impossible to take pictures in the tube through the Oregon coast aquarium. ISO 1600, f/1.8, 1/30th of a second, manual focus lens and fish that wouldn't hold still. It was beautiful in there though.
I am not sure if this is one of them, but we learned that many species of rock cod can take up to 25 years to get about 12-18" long. They don't have young until they are 25 years old and they can live to be over 200 years old. Makes sense why we have to look after the cod fishery.
