“The Gift” was an annual literary anthology published in a gift book format for the years 1836, 1837, 1839, 1840, and 1842-1845. Each book was published by Carey & Hart of Philadelphia in the fall of the year prior to the date given in the title, so that The Gift for 1836 was actually issued in October of 1835. Five of the gift books include new tales by Edgar Allan Poe – “Manuscript Found in a Bottle” (1836), “William Wilson” (1840), “Eleonora” (1842), “The Pit and the Pendulum” (1843), and “The Purloined Letter” (1845).

The British followed a month later with their own book edition from George Newnes in London with twelve of Shepperson’s illustrations.

From the Introduction:
“This book was in the making in 1966 and most of the photographs were shot then. The late Bruce Lee intended to publish this book years ago but decided against it when he learned that martial arts instructors were using his name to promote themselves. It was quite common to hear comments like: “I taught Bruce Lee” or “Bruce Lee taught me jeet kune do.” And Bruce may never have seen or known these martial artists.
“Bruce didn’t want people to use his name to promote themselves or their schools with false pretenses. He didn’t want them to attract students this way, especially the young teens.
“But after his death, his widow, Linda, felt that Bruce had contributed so much in the world of martial arts that it would be a great loss if the knowledge of Bruce would die with him. Although the book can never replace the actual teaching and knowledge that Bruce Lee possessed, it will enhance you, the serious martial artist, in developing your skill in fighting . . .”

"An unmanned probe fires sampling rockets at the Moon's surface to test its structure and composition. Note the antennae for sending data back to Earth. In the background another probe takes off after having made a soft landing on the Moon's surface. (Martin Information Services)"
The book presents the best information, ideas and assumptions on the conquest of the moon as of 1958. The authors, who were experts on missiles and space flight, tell how the moon would be approached, first with instrumented probes and then with man himself as a payload. Fascinating conjectures, based on the latest scientific findings, show what life on the moon might be like, how men would build a base there, how they would explore the moon, and how they would push on from there to further explorations of outer space.

John Carter of Mars is the eleventh and final book in the Barsoom series by Edgar Rice Burroughs. It is not actually a novel but rather a collection of two John Carter of Mars stories.
The first story was originally published in 1940 by Whitman as a Better Little Book entitled John Carter of Mars. Although credited to Edgar Rice Burroughs, it was written (and illustrated) by his son, John Coleman Burroughs and was later expanded and re-published in Amazing Stories as "John Carter and the Giant of Mars", the name it goes under in the collection.
The second story, "Skeleton Men of Jupiter", was first published in Amazing Stories in 1943. Intended as the first in a series of novelettes to be later collected in book form, in the fashion of Llana of Gathol, it ends with the plot unresolved, and the intended sequels were never written. Several other writers have written pastiche endings for the story.
The first edition of John Carter of Mars (a title that Burroughs never actually used for any book in the Barsoom series) was published in 1964 by Canaveral Press, fourteen years after Burroughs's death.
